The Wedding and All the Trimmings
Hitchcoc6 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
These people surely had to pay a price for their power. They are submerged in rules that require experts to explain to them. We are finally at wedding time and weird things are going on. Albert is faced with having little power over what he is to receive. To keep him out of Parliament, he cannot have a title. Because his uncle has a mistress and is a spendthrift, there is little money left to foist on poor Albert. So many of these guys are randy jerks, full of pomposity. Albert is taken to a brothel where he takes notes for his wedding night. The young prostitute is incredulous. There is a good deal of fencing that goes on, but the real fencing is between Victoria and Albert. Apparently, so much rides on this union, and love is really a by product. Oh well. Let's see how the relationship proceeds and what kind of a queen she is going to be. Poor Lord M. He is caught up in the rules of the game.

An Ordinary Woman

Warning: Spoilers
We are now heading for the Victoria and Albert show as both are soon smitten and decide to get married. Lord Melbourne gives his seal of approval to Victoria but actor Rufus Sewell also displays a sense of disappointment in his face.

However on the behest of his uncle, Albert wants an appropriate title and a financial settlement to secure his independence. In fact the first person Albert requests this from is Melbourne.

Although Victoria was half German in real life and relationship with Germany was cordial in those days, the writer introduces anti-German sentiment to the episode and we have the malicious Duke of Wellington telling Victoria that she might have to abdicate if it turns out that Albert is a Catholic. It might be Wellington was reflecting some elements of public opinion that existed in those days.

Victoria looks cute in her bonnet and flower crown as she marries Albert and prepares for her wedding night.

Below stairs Mr Penge gets to show off his knowledge of German and meets a long lost lady friend.
