As I leave the post, I look back on how cinema has changed since 2013 and, below, pick a favourite movie from each year of my tenure – as well as a turkey
This week, I filed my final column as chief film critic for the Observer. I’m stepping down after exactly 10 years in the role, making way for the brilliant Wendy Ide to take over the reins and put her own inimitable stamp on the paper. A longstanding colleague and friend, Wendy is an exceptional critic and I look forward to reading her insightful and elegant reviews in these pages for years to come. In the meantime, looking back at my own experiences over the past decade, I’m struck by how much the moviegoing landscape has changed.
When I took over from the great Philip French in September 2013, Kathryn Bigelow was still the only woman to have won the Oscar for best director,...

Fiddlehead are returning this summer with their third studio album Death Is Nothing to Us, due out August 18th on Run for Cover. The indie punks will support the release with a 2023 North American tour, and they’ve shared a sample of it today with the new single “Sullenboy.”
Grief is complicated, and Death Is Nothing to Us sees Fiddlehead vocalist Pat Flynn go through the phases again, and again, and again. The LP’s title embraces the inevitability of loss, but it also seems to raise a challenge: What’s the point in fearing death if the shit we have to deal with while we’re alive is this bad?
“I don’t want people to romanticize grief and depression, myself included,” Flynn explains in a press release. “But I wanted to write about the way loss can perpetuate this feeling of sadness in your life. I didn’t...

Elon Musk is getting the Alex Gibney treatment.
Gibney, who has tackled Scientology, Wikileaks and Russian president Vladimir Putin, announced Monday that tech entrepreneur and multi-billionaire Elon Musk is the focus of his latest work.
Titled Musk, the feature project already months into making is described as a “definitive and unvarnished examination” of the controversial and headline-making CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter.
Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions is producing the film alongside Closer Media, Anonymous Content and Double Agent, which is also financing the project.
The list of producers and executive producers feels like it rivals the number of Teslas seen on Beverly Hills streets.
Gibney and Jessie Deeter are producing the film via Jigsaw with the company’s Stacey Offman and Richard Perello executive producing. Joey Marra and Zhang Xin will produce on behalf of Closer Media, which has a mission “to make meaningful stories to bring people closer together,...

A large fire broke out by the Hollywood Bowl as concertgoers were leaving the venue following a “Sound of Music” singalong on Sept. 17.
User videos on the social media app Citizen showed firefighters rushing to put out palm trees that had ignited into flames. Lafd also requested the California Highway Patrol shut down one lane of traffic.
The Lafd posted a notice on its Twitter page after the blaze was under control, writing: “That somewhat stubborn fire near the @HollywoodBowl, our 1,423rd emergency of the day, thankfully involves only vegetation.”
The cause of the fire is not immediately known.

One of Orson Welles’ best has arrived in 4K! Kino Lorber has revived Universal’s 3-version study of the bordertown crime & corruption drama, that knocks us out with Welles’ colorful, weird characters, intricate scene blocking and infinitely creative camera work. Almost all of the extras from the earlier DVD and Blu-ray editions are here, with added expert commentary (the tally of tracks is now five). The performances are superb — Welles won’t lay off the candy bars, Janet Leigh wisely avoids the motel shower and Charlton Heston is actually fine as a ‘pretty unlikely’ Mexican. We’ve seen this show ten times — it’s so dense that each viewing brings new revelations.
