Akira
Starring Sonakshi Sinha, Anurag Kashyap, Konkona Sen Sharma
Directed by A R Murugadoss
Rating: ** ½
The biggest takeaway from this brutal depiction of police atrocity is the cop Rane. As played by Anurag Akshyap the character acquires sharp spiky edges that pierce the plot and penetrate into a region far deeper than where director Murugadoss rests his case.
Don’t get him wrong. Murugadoss means well. Akira takes up the cause of women’s empowermentBut only on a superficial elevel. When Akira is still a chil(which is to say, she is played by little Mishiekka Arora) she takes revenge on a acid thrower by… well, learning karat(prompted by her inspiring mute dad) and throwing acid back on the guy who did it.

How do you begin a review of a film like Akira? It’s a remake of a Tamil film in the hands of A.R.Murugadoss. Yes. It has Sonakshi Sinha in her first ever full blown action role. Yes. Vishal and Shekhar set the tunes for the first time with Arm. Yes. So what makes Akira different? Well, it’s yet another sample the Bollywood audience is opening up to new films and directors are sitting up and taking note. Santha Kumar’s original script was written with a male lead, a romance angle and a complex screenplay that blew you away. Akira stands out despite being a remake because of the masterstroke in Arm’s additional screenplay and judgement call on changing the gender of its lead actor. It is still very much a commercial film but where it takes away the extra masala you would see in most films,...

Resistance to the “female-centric” film is an affliction that has plagued Bollywood for most of its history; despite the few dozen films over the years that have proved actresses’ ability to hold their own without needing a male costar (dating back to 1957’s Oscar-nominated “Mother India”), screenplays that place women in the spotlight have been disappointingly infrequent.
Thankfully, with Vidya Balan’s “Kahaani” in 2012, Kangana Ranaut’s “Queen” in 2013, Deepika Padukone’s “Piku” in 2014 and Priyanka Chopra’s “Mary Kom” that same year, Bollywood has increasingly warmed up to the reality that female star power and strong stories can draw in crowds, box office returns, and critical acclaim. While you won’t see a fan following for an actress as rabid as that of, say, Salman Khan, the concept of a woman-oriented film is approached with less trepidation and more curiosity now than ever before by both filmmakers and audiences.

Close to 20 months after her last release Tevar, Sonakshi Sinha is returning with Akira. This time around, she is the central protagonist in there and the only lead per se since the film revolves around her. Since the film is directed by A.R. Murugadoss [Ghajini, Holiday], one can well expect good entertainment quotient in there. The filmmaker has enjoyed a consistently good track record in South as well as North, and given the impression that the theatrical promo gave, it is pretty much on the cards that this Fox film would have good hard hitting content to boast of. The film also has Anurag Kashyap as the main villain.
The film would primarily be aiming for that set of audience which saw Rani Mukerji’s Mardaani [3.46 crore] and Anushka Sharma’s NH10 [3.35 crore] and gave it a reasonably decent opening day. Hence, the opening too is expected to be on the same lines and...

Sonakshi Sinha’s Akira is arriving at the Box Office with good economics in place. Here is why:
– Cost of Production: 22 crore
– P&A: 8 crore
Total costs: 30 crore
Recovery:
– Satellite + Music: 15.5 crore
Total recovery: 15.5 crore
Further 14.5 crore need to come in from theatrical business [India and Overseas] and other ancillary rights.
What is impressive is the fact that despite a female centric subject, Akira has fetched a good satellite price. In fact for Sonakshi Sinha, it is a big deal indeed to be getting a similar response for television as some of the leading men in the industry.
Considering the fact that Akira is an A.R. Murugadoss film and the filmmaker has already given a couple of centuries already [Ghajini, Holiday], it would be interesting to see what he has to offer with his female centric Akira which is again an action entertainer.

Since stepping onto the scene, Sonakshi Sinha has played a variety of roles – from the cool but resilient damsel in distress, the one who is dying, the one who falls in love and many more, but there has always been one role she knew she wanted to take on – a full on action avatar. In Naam Hai Akira, (Akira In India) the gripping action thriller, directed by the great Ar Murugadoss, Sonakshi got that chance to be the action hero.

This September, one of the films we have our eye on is the must-see action drama Akira, starring Sonakshi Sinha.
A tale of rebellion, revenge and retribution, Akira (which translates to ‘Graceful Strength’ in Sanskrit) is a gripping action drama about a college girl Akira (Sonakshi Sinha) whose life spirals out of control when she becomes unwittingly involved in a crime. Now with a gang of corrupt police officers giving her the chase, and with no one to turn to, Akira will have to find in herself the courage and the power to stand up and face her enemies.
It is said, that when a deep injury is done to us, we can never recover until we forgive. With twists and turns, pouring emotions and edge-of-the-seat action, will this final battle between Akira and the law breakers end in finding Akira Justice?
The film sees Sonakshi Sinha in a brand new full on action role.

She said, "A R Murugadoss has indeed touched upon the burning issue of acid attacks on innocent girls in some parts of our country. It is one of the most important plots in our film as Akira's father decides she should learn self-protection and enrolls her in a karate camp where as girls are generally sent to music or dance or handicraft coaching institutes. In a recent interview for her upcoming film Akira, which releases in cinemas on 2nd September, actress Sonakshi Sinha mentioned that this is a great time to be a woman in Indian cinema. According to her, not only are women getting to play good characters, but the audience too, has become more accepting of these roles.
Looking back over the last couple of years and the types of films that have released in India, we couldn’t agree more.
From a damsel in distress to a figure of power, women have come a long way in Bollywood. With characters especially created keeping women in mind, this points to a new wave in Indian cinema, where women are being trusted to carry a film to box office success. This is a stark difference from the previous notion that the role of the protagonist was reserved only for a male character.

A.R. Murugadoss, the man who brought the world Ghajini - the musical adaptation of Memento - and 7 Aam Arivu, a film about a circus performer who is the last living scion of kung fu Bodhidharma, is back in the director's chair with his new film Akira (or Naam Hai Akira in North America). This is not a remake of Otomo Kastuhiro's 1988 cyberpunk anime classic. It is instead a remake of a 2011 Tamil film called Mouna Guru with the lead role notably gender swapped from a male protagonist in the Tamil version to Sonakshi Sinha's female Akira in the Hindi film. Here's a bit of the synopsis to give you a taste: A gripping action thriller about a college girl Akira (Sonakshi Sinha)...

The trailer of Akira has been creating quite a rage since its release, and while Sonakshi Sinha has been garnering praise for her tough-as-nails act, her on-screen rival Teena Singh too has been generating much curiosity as the girl who’s taking a panga with Sonakshi!
“Yes, it’s funny when people point out to me saying ‘she’s the one who bullies Sonakshi’,” says Teena, who’s already a popular face in the advertising industry. About her panga with Sonakshi, onscreen of course, she adds, “Sonakshi is one of the best people I have met in this industry. She made me feel really comfortable. But it was just strange having to bully her on the big screen because she is such a lovely person in real,” says Teena.
