Excellent cast and gripping story
gn-5425624 October 2016
Really enjoyed the movie (that this is based on) so was a bit dubious when I saw this on the Netflix listings.

Gave it a shot and what can I say... 3 episodes in and I'm hooked! The casting is brilliant, especially the female lead, and the script and story line are engaging and move on at a really good pace.

If you know the movie, you will think exactly what I thought - "How on Earth are they going to make a series out of this?"

Well so far so good. It's covered most of the aspects of the original movie while bringing it's own new edge and side stories.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that this is a potential future classic (think Fringe / X-Files etc).

Can't wait for episode 4!

Canceled?
tomoconnor-16-94477521 October 2017
I hate the fact that this show was not renewed for a 3rd season. This seems to happen to me a lot over the years, that a show that I like is canceled, similar to Fringe...my favorite TV show ever. I guess that I must have strange tastes, but I liked the concept, and I thought that it was well casted as well as written. Just another bummer for me!

Strong start
Calicodreamin17 August 2020
A strong start that fizzled about halfway through the first (and only) season. The main storyline was stretched to its breaking point and the side plots felt discarded. A wonderful concept that was perfect for a movie but too open ended for a series. The timelines ran amok over each other and left plot holes everywhere.

One of the best series I've seen.
brittvanderwallenx16 February 2017
Wow what a great series, I love it.

The first episode was so exciting. I've watched the whole season in 2 days. I think everybody is way too negative about this. Even after the plot twists i wanted to watch the rest of the episodes. This is one of the best series I've seen. A combination of tension, humor and love.

I really hope for a season 2, it is my favourite series!

Interesting, entertaining, even touching...
Dr_Sagan16 October 2016
This is one of my favorites shows this season. I only watched the pilot but it looks very promising.

It's a TV show based on the 2000 film of the same name. It is a fantasy series but a serious one.

Although its premise has nothing really to do with time traveling, the repercussions are pretty similar. A young female cop in 2016 opens a communication channel with her soon-to-be dead father in 1996 who is also a cop working undercover. In her attempt to save his life, she passes critical information to him that change their lives (and those around them) dramatically.

The pilot episode has a remarkably balanced tone. Everything collaborates almost perfectly to create an atmosphere that is both moving and exciting.

The leading couple of Peyton List (the daughter) and Riley Smith (the father) have great chemistry and their scenes "together" are really touching.

The script isn't over-the-top and it doesn't defies logic as another "parallel universes" series of this season (Timeless). The music and the songs work well in this too.

Overall: The subject is trite and it has misused countless times, but "Frequency" deals with it with great care. The two leads give great, touching performances, and the show looks entertaining and interesting. Highly Recommended.

UPDATE (after seeing the 6th episode): The show has lost many of its initial virtues that I pointed out in my Pilot's review. The plot now seems less interesting, the atmosphere is failing to be captivating ( the Nightingale scenes look like a bad episode of Maggie Q's "Stalker"), its logic starting to fail with numerous plot holes (not to mention the brand new "It is Karma" (inevitable soon or later) element that they introduced to us in episode 1x06) and in the end it seems less and less entertaining. I'll keep watching for now but it starts to bore me and I started to dislike the main characters now that we know more of their actual personalities.

First episode great. Second...frustrating beyond belief.
michaelant55513 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I was looking forward to this as I loved the film, but why, why, why do these show creators and directors make such a meal out of the drama. Mountains out of molehills springs to mind; like it was directed by a 13 year old girl with attention-seeking issues trying to milk every last bit of drama out of some of the scenes, or a singer who holds a note for too long because they like the sound of their own voice (or a program reviewer who doesn't know when to shut up, heh-heh). *Spoiler alert here for explanation purposes* - I really enjoyed the first episode and couldn't wait for the second, but when her mother came on the radio and she didn't answer, I'm afraid that finished it for me. Absolutely ridiculous beyond belief! I'm all for cliff-hangers and tension building, but after she 'ripped her father a new one' for not telling her mom the truth, then she doesn't speak to her when she comes on the radio???????...I tell you what...oooooooh!...I tell you what!!!...No, no I can't because the words just don't exist to express my blood-boiling, feverous exasperation at the total nut-job responsible for that scene.

Give this show a chance!
Leighhi9136 October 2016
Since I was a big fan of the movie I also enjoyed the changes in the new television show. I will watch again next week. Love the two lead actors. There is a big mystery with who the daughter and father can trust. I loved the 1996 time period and I thought the makeup artists did a good job aging the police officers. I liked the idea she was still in her childhood home. She has never recovered from the loss of her father and now has the chance to get to know him all over again. I look forward to finding out what happened to her parent's marriage. Their are similarities to the movie and Dennis Quaid is hard to beat but I hope viewers will give this show a shot. This is not time travel exactly but so interesting with the Ham radio. My favorite scene was when the daughter brought the radio to the hospital.

A Single Frequency
megan_chatterton17 July 2022
Frequency is a great concept- a woman solving crime with her dad from different timelines through a ham radio. Raimy and Frank try to save nurses from a serial killer called the Nightingale.

Pros- good acting and an interesting concept, tells a complete story Cons- a single storyline that could have used some variety, frustrating main character, some lack of makeup to clarify present/past timelines.

First/Second episode surprisingly good
syrik6 October 2016
Being from the CW I expected to only watch half of it before changing the channel. Happily surprised I watched the whole episode and enjoyed it. Not so happy that it's a reboot...can't anyone come up with an original story anymore? That aside the show is well cast and acted (though a 28 year old Homicide Detective is a tough pill to swallow, technically possible, but extremely unlikely). The first episode has some serious twists, usually the type of stuff that would develop over an entire season. Hopefully they didn't put everything into the first episode and nothing into the rest of the season. It will be interesting to see if they can continue this caliber of a performance. Here's hoping.

Second episode kept pace, though not quite as dramatic, but within expectations.

I Get It!
stags1002 January 2019
Not a bad premise and the first few episodes sped along and soon enough you were knee deep in the theme of the series. Then it goes flat, you know who the bad guy is but there's 6 episodes left... also I counted 174 "I get it' from various characters lol

The Truth about the low reviews
baniya2 November 2018
This is seriously the best series I have seen in a long time. Very clever and engaging writing.

The low reviews for the show have all been by people who only watched a few episodes of the show. The beauty is in the entire season. All the pieces start taking together later in the season.

Very disappointed that they cancelled this show based on a few unintelligent reviews by people who have such short attention spans.

I really hope they bring this show back. It had been fantastic!

I wish there were more seasons
imlindaheart24 February 2019
The show was quite enjoyable and to my surprise, not too predictable. The part of the dad was written and acted very well, I'll go check out other things Riley Smith has done when I get some time.

I wish the show would have had another season or two and maybe deal with other topics besides the Nihgtingale.

Pretty much just stick to the movie...
slagman5-129 April 2017
I am a huge fan of the movie, so thought about giving this show a shot. I felt the way they tried to mix things up was interesting, but a lot of things really hold this show back. First of all, it's the cast. The Riley Smith who plays Frank Sullivan doesn't seem a good fit in my opinion. And no, I'm not comparing him to Dennis Quaid. Mainly I found it very hard to sympathize with him. The entire time he acted like a junky. And every time he spoke he seemed like he lacked confidence. He did not at all feel convincing to me that he was in law enforcement. That fact alone made it kind of hard for me to feel immersed into the show.

Peyton List playing Raimy Sullivan might be the strongest part of the show, but in a way that might actually be a bad thing because whenever she has scenes with Lenny Jacobson who plays Gordo, it really just exaggerates just how terrible of an actor Lenny Jacobson is. I don't intend to be mean, maybe it's not his fault, but it's pretty painful every time he has any screen time.

And if half of the main duo being completely not convincing wasn't bad enough, I found that the writing seems to be all over the place. Sometimes I find some of the things they do or some of the ways they tried to change up the original story kind of clever (not meaning better than the original, not in the slightest, but clever in that they found a way to deliver the scene without looking like an exact copy of the source), while other times, like in the dialog between the mother and father in the second episode, it seems very contrived.

Now I admit I've only watched the first three episodes, I intend to at least finish the first season, but it seems to be getting worse with each episode rather than better, but I'll still give it a chance. If it improves in the later episodes I will definitely come back to revise this review. But as of right now, I am finding this series very mediocre. And that's not comparing it to the movie, which was excellent. If I compared the two, this would simply be terrible in comparison.

Really intriguing pilot! Can't wait to see more of the plot unfold.
chocolety-engineer7 October 2016
If you are fed-up seeing Barry messing up time-lines and creating complications ,this show is perfect. Loved the pilot. They kept it simple with the science and acting is good. Peyton List was enough for me to watch it.

I haven't seen the original movie and i guess that makes it more sweeter. Don't care about the science and how much it makes sense in reality but it indulges you and that should be enough.

Looking forward for next episode.

Give it a try.

Thanks CW. 8.5/10

Great Show!
yossarian1006 October 2016
Solid performances and edge of your seat suspense.

Really pleased to discover they're going to work the different layers of the time-lines. Doing that, they can blow this series wide open.

The photography is great and the music fits nicely. They stuck with the main characters for the first episode, instead of watering it down by spending more time with the secondary players.

This may end up being one of the best "about time" stories I've ever seen. I really, really enjoyed the first episode and I'm so looking forward to more.

I can't recommend this highly enough.

Second Episode Review *Minor Spoilers ahead*
wingerus13 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
***May contain peanuts(spoilers)**** After viewing the first episode I loved it! Strong female lead, i liked the action and the idea especially after watching the movie. But god damn it, the 3rd episode either saves the series or somehow kills it in crib. There's a point at the end of the second episode in which Raimi needs to JUST answer the radio or things between Frank and her mom turn badly and he gets kicked out of the house, altering the timeline in the most stupidest way possible.

I do hope the plot thickens and will definitely change the whole situation, if not, because of the script, this series should be ended.

An Okay Start
rbr-412996 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Not having seen the film Frequency I cannot make comparisons in that sphere. While some label the show as "science fiction" I consider it fantasy. Science fiction contains actual science, but the proposition that someone can communicate with anyone in the past (who has died in the meantime) by whatever means is ludicrous. So, to enjoy the show the viewer must simply accept the premise as fantasy and move on. There were a few things that bothered me at the outset.

We are introduced to two NYPD detectives, Satch Rayna (Mekhi Phifer) and Raimy Sullivan (Peyton List). I wonder if there was any intentional alliteration with the two "R" names. The introduction could appear to be typical television casting with a black superior and white female subordinate. One might wonder whether the show producers are really focused on satisfying the values of Hollywood leftists. Well, it's one thing to adhere to a PC agenda, another for the actors chosen to deliver the goods. In this case the actors did an excellent job with the material they were given.

Anyway, my first thought on seeing Raimy was that she looked too young to be an experienced NYPD detective. Rayna is not treated as a rookie. Then we meet Raimy's mother, Julie Sullivan (Devin Kelley), who looked like she could have been Raimy's sister. I checked IMDb and discovered that List and Kelley were born the same year. Some gray was added to Kelley's hair, but the makeup people failed at making her look old enough to be Raimy's mother. So, why didn't they cast someone who would have been the right age? (age discrimination?) No doubt it was so that Kelley could play the younger version of the mother.

The episode presents the consequences of Raimy managing to save her father's life in the past, the so-called butterfly effect. For the sake of the plot the writer kept the effect simple but especially tragic. What is not considered is the assumption that if the mother died Raimy would continue on to grow up to be an NYPD detective. Taking the mother out of the child's life would not only effect the home life, but every other life with whom the mother had contact. In this respect the plot is simplistic and like "time travel" plots does not adequately address the complexities of "communication travel."

Excellent So Far !
davisnathan11 October 2016
The original movie is one of my all time favorites---so my bar for this particular remake was set pretty high. I was NOT disappointed--- Episode One was excellent!

Good acting, well developed characters, and a story pretty true to the original----but with its own character and flavor. I really liked it a lot.

I hope the rest of the series is as good as Episode 1. You might want to be sure to watch it first if you missed the Pilot.

Again----excellent in all regards and highly recommended! It does a pretty good job of setting up the story, grabbing your attention from the start---and putting a pretty good twist or two in the mix a well. I really liked the characters too---and that was what I was afraid of most since the original movie was so great a personal favorite!

It was pretty good
snowyprecipice7 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I'd give a 7.5 but you can't do that on IMDb.

It started out pretty good but I couldn't help making comparisons to Signal (a korean thriller-mystery series with a similar premise) and the latter is superior by far.

Also I was annoyed that anyone could think Frank beat up Joe in the interrogation room. Just check his knuckles; if they aren't raw and red it's obvious he didn't do anything.

Very good !!
nahuelcutrera28 November 2016
I love this show, they took the original idea from the movie and they turn it into a great TV series, I really like how it's grounded in reality, no nonsense. The actors are doing a great work, the characters feel very real, the policemen seem pretty much like real policemen, instead of the usual miracle workers we are use to see on TV. The suspense they create with the loose assassin it's a palpable thing that keeps you wanting more every chapter, and the time paradoxes make the narrative even more interesting, I love it. Deserves all the support it can get, considering how easily networks shot down the shows nowadays, I really hope they don't shot this one down.

Frequency is a high quality program and my wife and I recommend it!
smokeandtrain2 December 2016
My wife and I enjoyed the movie and were a little skeptical that a TV show could live up to the movie. We were wrong, the series is every bit as good as the movie if not better. We are eagerly looking forward to seeing the story line and the characters develop for the rest of this season and for the seasons to come. Thanks for a quality program, a rarity for this day and time.

The plot is gripping, the characters are believable and the transition between the past and the present is smooth. the only complaint that we have is that we wish the episodes were longer. The good thing is that we are left eagerly waiting for next Wednesday. Thanks CW for excellent TV.

Needs Direction
klesner14 December 2016
The movie was good - but it concluded in 1.5 hours. Unfortunately, the TV show keeps you hanging week after week after week and is quite annoying. It would be a much better platform to have the father & daughter teaming up to solve different cases through time each week.

I like the characters and the acting - so I've been able to tolerate the show thus far, but I won't be able to take a second season if they don't change the format to where each episode resolves itself. The last two episodes I've actually been fast forwarding during the slow parts because it's dragging on so much.

I probably would have given the show 8 or 9 stars the first couple episodes, so by the end of the first season I'll probably be down around 4 stars! They really need to change the format!

Way too much drama and dumb decisions
oliver_kittler2 November 2016
All I can say is I really have no idea how can this have such a good rating on IMDb. The premise looked a bit boring (same old story) but I was hoping it'd be interesting in some new way. Sadly, it's not.

After a while you'll notice a plot hole after plot hole and personally I just couldn't watch it anymore. The characters say and do things nobody would ever say or do in their situation. I don't mind that there's no special effects to speak of, the series could still have been good, but this is honestly just bad.

Remember all the unnecessary, repetitive drama from Supernatural? Well, imagine that. Only without the good stuff in between and a lot dumber decisions. At least the characters in Supernatural are like-able and the fantasy part is interesting. Here? Not so much. No explanation at all here. Nothing makes sense in this show... and don't get me started about the supposed "butterfly effect".

Once again, a show that insults the intelligence of the viewer. It's even worse than some of the teen drama out there. Avoid...
