Starts Well, But Gets Dull Quickly
vexvane2 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I would normally give something this weak a 1/10. It gets a 3 because it did have couple funny scenes in it and it was not a total waste of my time.

Problem is, it is great concept executed really badly. Acting is on par with maybe high school drama class. Actors deliver their lines extremely stiff. It was actually worse than soap operas.

Concept of restaurant owner making a deal with creature that is a cross between a vampire and something from H.P. Lovecraft books is awesome. And this could have been really solid film. But it is like someone wrote a skeletal script on a napkin, and then filled it up to extend the story with nothing but really, really bad filler scenes.

Ending felt forced. Not preplanned, and well thought out, but like someone simply decided "ok, I wrote enough, time to end this thing" and came up with one of dumbest endings for a movie of this type I have ever seen. And I see a LOT of films.

I understand that this was likely very low budget attempt and probably people involved had fun making it, and if this was one of those free straight-to-YouTube films it would be ok. But as a demonstration of anyones skill at film making, it utterly fails.

I wanted to like this film more. I really did.

An unfunny and unscary horror-parody.
johannes2000-19 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I guess they set out for a horror-comedy, apparently aiming at serious splatter & gore combined with absurd situations and humor, maybe even at a horror-parody. The result however is unbalanced, apart from a few chuckles it's hardly funny and it's definitely not scary.

The concept of a demonic monster in the basement that feeds on human sacrifices sounds great, and the terrible growls and gushes of blood in the beginning were promising enough, but when halfway through the movie the monster is revealed and brought down to just an ugly guy in a monk's habit, the story quickly spirals down the drain. Are we really to understand that this guy devoured total humans, clothes and all, in a single big bite?!

This lack of logic and inability to frighten, combined with a way too slow pace, awkward dialogues and wooden acting, make this movie at best a nice but rather disappointing try, even if intended as a parody.

Movie suffers from an undercooked script
Armin_Nikkhah_Shirazi18 June 2023
THE RESTAURANT AKA THE DEVIL'S RESTAURANT tells the story of a Faustian Bargain between the manager of a Restaurant and a demon. The terms of the deal are that the demon makes the restaurant successful by sending it lots of guests, many of whom will never be missed if they disappeared, and in return the manager feeds some of those to the demon.

Based on this premise, a script for a horror-comedy would seem to almost write itself: many aspects of the restaurant industry can be mined for scenes of situational humor, not to mention that food itself is a ripe subject for entertainment.

Alas, this movie felt very much like the script needed to be rewritten a few more times. After an awesome prologue during the opening credits, by far the best part of the film, it gets progressively sillier and worse. By the time the movie ends, one feels disappointment at just how short this fell of its potential.

The main characters cannot be blamed. Mark Robert Turner and Anthony Misiano did well, the best job in the cast. Turner's character reminded me a bit of John Cleese's character in the TV series FAWLTY TOWERS, and Misiano seems to be a natural comedian.

The production design was okay. The exterior of the restaurant looked kind of shabby compared to what a fine dining Italian restaurant is expected to look like, but that may well have been the point: it would take the demon's powers to attract lots of people to this place.

Some of the cinematography gave this away as a low budget affair, but this does not set the movie back nearly as much as the screenplay. The premise was good, some aspects of the story were innovative, some of the gags landed, but it all felt like it should have been allowed to stew a little more before being served up for realization.

Not funny, not scary, not as good as most high school film projects
greg-2953512 January 2020
Take a film with no scares, no humor, bad dialogue, bad acting, no money, a stupid story and you have The Devil's Restaurant. Blows my mind that people may have actually spent time working on this. Time for a new job or hobby or whatever this was....

Underrated "so bad its good" movie
axel3354 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Now ladies and gentleman, this is a really bad movie. It competes with Troll 2, Birdemic and The Room of the worst movie ever made. It's extremely bad and it really deserves some better attention from all the "so bad its good" film lovers out there.

The movie itself is a total train wreck of extremely bad acting, lousy script, bad sound and photo. Some scenes doesn't make sense at all. Other scenes seems like they are happening in the wrong order. Confusing and very very very bad.

The silly story about a restaurant owner that has a monster in the basement is ridiculous in itself and it doesn't make more sense when the "monster" shows up and is a man in a ugly mask!

Do NOT watch this movie if you are not into "so bad its good" movies.

Stop this Director
arfdawg-18 April 2019
If you screen this garbage, i promise you it will represent one of the worst movies you have ever seen. Hands down.

Don't get your hopes up and you'll still be disappointed.

The director has less than zero talent.

He should not be allowed to make another movie.

Enjoyable horror comedy
Woodyanders28 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Desperate restaurant manager Andy (nicely played by Mark Robert Turner) makes a deadly deal with a demon to ensure that his Italian eatery Scoppa is a success. However, complications ensue after busboy Jeremy (amiable Anthony Misiano) finds out about this deal.

Writer/director Eric Ford Holevinski relates the fun story at a constant pace, maintains an engaging tongue-in-cheek tone throughout, gets a good deal of laughs from the amusing sense of inspired dark humor, and delivers some cool bits of bloody gore. The game cast have a ball with the loopy material: Matthew Thomas Burda as the huffy Michael, Byron Clohessy as laidback pothead Richard, Stephanie Juergens as the sweet Karen, Paul Casali as lethal demon Exses, and Robert Clohessy as the irascible Chef Dominick. A total hoot.

Getting a taste
kosmasp10 May 2019
A horror movie that is also trying to be funny. I can see that this feels problematic. That it touches nerves. This plays almost entirely in one location, which made shooting obviously easier and the budget wasn't that big either (at least partially financed through Kickstarter as I read in an Interview). You may not like what the director decided to do with the main idea and you may find some dialog awful, but overall this is more than a decent effort to entertain the viewer.

It has blood, it has jokes and it is as over the top as it needs to be. Not to everyones liking as I already stated, but that is not a reason to declare the director talentless. If you have a heart for independent movies and the humor touches home, you will have quite some fun with this. I know I had

A nice diversion
silverspur_dave26 December 2021
I disagree with several reviewers who've blasted this film for bad or "wooden" acting. One of the indicators that you're watching good acting is that you forget the actors are acting, and that was pretty much my experience here, with a wide range of characters played with appropriate gusto and skill.

Much of the violence is out of shot, the details left to the viewer's imagination. A dying scream followed by a generous splash of blood can say more than the grossest, most graphic death.

There were a few problems with the plot and the pacing, and the ending could have been better; however, with a little sympathy and patience, you'll find an hour and a half of decent entertainment here.

Real indie cinema, without the fluff
I actually rather enjoyed this film. Did it have its flaws? Yes. Do I wish it was gorier? Absolutely. But the overall film works, even with the minuscule budget it had.

It never fails to amaze me...after I see a film that I consider moderately enjoyable, I then read reviews that say it's the worst film in the world, or in this case, the worst director in the world. I found the directing to be smart, taking advantage of specific elements (eg lighting & sound) to hide some of the shortcomings in fx due to budget constraints. The premise is interesting and the cast does an above average job at conveying their respective characters. Much of the dialog feels a bit broken and over the top, but I have absolutely zero doubt that the director cast the film with this in mind. While not an over the top comedy/horror, the film does indeed have a fair amount of black comedy throughout.

My personal wishes would have been:
  • loads of gore. The premise is perfect for a full-on gorefest, especially with the black humor portrayed by characters and the script.
  • a little more development and story behind the demon. We get some, but not much. It certainly isn't needed, but it could have assisted in adding depth to the story.

The 85 minutes went by very quickly and I was entertained the entire time. The film moves quickly, adding just enough character development and backstory to provide the minimum amount of knowledge necessary for the tale being told. This is no Oscar winner, nor will it be one most people would even watch a second time, but I enjoyed it.

For fans of:
  • horror
  • black comedy
  • demonic stories

It is worth RESTATING...this is a low budget indie film. If you go in to this expecting tons of great fx, loads of gore, and jump-scares, this film is not for you. If you like a moderately paced dramatic horror film with dark humor, and done on an indie budget, give it a shot. It's on Prime right now (11/2019) so it's worth the price.

Don't trust the bad reviews
bwiley-8802621 December 2022
Was it a great movie, no. However, it was very entertaining. The acting was ham fisted, and the script...meh, but you know what, it worked! The film was extremely self-aware and did not take itself seriously. Therein lies it's true strength. The Devil's Restaurant is quirky in all the right ways. Pay no attention to the low scoring reviews, some of which did not even bother to use proper spelling and grammar. This movie is not groundbreaking and I doubt it was made with any award aspirations. To be frank, I started watching this with the intent of simply having something playing in the background while doing other things. Two minutes in and I was hooked, though. Is it horror? Well, the premise definitely is. Comedy, absolutely. Let go of your expectations, open your mind, and enjoy this silly little film.
