So funny!
sue-062397 December 2021
I've had a rubbish sort of day and was feeling very fed up, so decided to put last night's episode of Two Doors Down on. Within 5 minutes I was chuckling away at the outrageous and hilarious comedy this brings to the screen.

My favourite is Elaine C Smith as Christine. She is SO funny!

A wonderful comedy series.
Sleepin_Dragon19 July 2023
Married couple Eric and Beth live an ordinary, comfortable life, that is until their neighbours invite themselves round to enjoy Beth's hospitality.

Quite possibly the best BBC sitcom for years, fortunately now it's moved from BBC2 to prime time on BBC1, well deserved, it's now the one, funny sitcom.

The writing is tremendous, the acting phenomenal, but it's the variety that makes it so enjoyable. You never know who the focus will be on, or what disaster awaits any of the clan. Watch out for the subtle body language, the shrugs, sighs and looks of pure disbelief.

I'm sure we all have our favourite characters, and I have no doubt Christine and Cathy will have hoards of fans, but every single character plays a part, each of them deliver.

As for favourite episodes, there are so many to choose from, but Amalfi Friends and 2020's Christmas Special take some beating.

9/10.

Brilliant

I wouldn't normally take time to review but find myself having to come to the defence of Two Doors Down and the brilliant writing of Simon Carlyle and Gregor Sharp. I can only assume that the reviewer filmcomedybuff is neither a. From Scotland or b. A TV comedy Buff as the review of 1 star is simply not merited.

Love this series and the characters, it's becoming 'Abigail's Party (with Kilts)'. Its a slow burner and has crept up on me and many of my friends over the 3 series where we all now regularly pitch up the morning after an episode to have a laugh about what was just aired. The characters have built slowly but a special mention to the performances by Doon Mackichan as Cathy (Modern day Abigail) and Elaine C Smith as Christine. To be fair I can take or leave other characters Elaine has played but the role of Christine was made for her.

Also 'utterly dismal' as a review doesn't say much for the panel that voted it Best Comedy at the 2017 Royal Television Society Scotland Awards.

Brilliant stuff but perhaps for people who appreciate good 'Scottish' comedy.

Top notch comedy from BBC Scotland
Biffbear5 March 2019
As a huge comedy fan, Two Doors Down takes its rightful place among the best shows on TV at the moment. The premise is simple but perfect, the glorious cast of characters well researched and all of them have their faults but also things we love about them.

I am not Scottish, but I appreciate the humour having loved Still Game since its inception, Naked Video, High Life etc and this really is good.

It may appear to be easy to watch, but it can be so painful times and I often scream at the TV for Eric and Beth to "get a backbone", but then I realise they are like me and my husband, always wanting to help, but end up being taken advantage of.

Christine, what a character! Elaine C Smith gets all the very best lines, she shines whenever she comes on the screen. Doone is superb, I know women like this, who think they are the "gays" best friend and that they all love her but she is just a sad old drunk with a husband who has a huge inferiority complex. As for Ian and Gordon, they are slightly removed from all the insane goings on, but get drawn in every time.

OK, you may guess that I love this show, and it definitely deserves a lot more than 1 star. Keep going with it, make the characters worse and worse without losing those hints of redemption and vulnerability.

Roll on series 5!

Brilliant start to series 4

Great writing makes the tensions between this closely knit group into great watching. Eric and Beth remain the rocks on to which all the other characters crash with all their different foibles. Amazing to see the tensions between Cathy and Michelle, Ian and Gordon, Christine with everyone, swirling around in madness. Bodes well for this fourth series building on the success of the previous series.

Easy watching

I absolutely adore Two Doors Down. I think some of the previous reviews have been harsh, with comments such as 'every episode is the same'. I couldn't disagree more. Each episode is centred around the main characters with a different story each week. It is a light hearted hilarious comedy.

It's definitely a programme that is easy to sit and watch.

I hope to see a fifth series soon!

Going down hill a bit after season 3
cindylchick28 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Only discovered this series recently and have really enjoyed cringing along with it but feel Cathy's character is getting way too over the top. No one would tolerate her behaviour and it was much funnier when her antics were less vicious.

I do miss Sharon Rooney playing Christine's daughter Sophie but like the addition of Joy McAvoy and Graeme Stevely (Michelle & Al), they've slotted right in but the writers definitely need to soften Cathy so she isn't totally hateful.

Scottish comedy at its best
graemestevely21 October 2018
I think for a few years Scottish comedy has struggled, however this programme has became quite the hidden gem. The characters in the show Catherine, Christine and Colin and recently in the last episode of series 2, Alan are absolutely tremendous and I think this could be the big Scottish comedy for years to come.

Not as good as it was.
wbaird-0546625 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After series 3 i would have gave it a higher score and most of the cast are extremely good especially Elaine C Smith as Christine. However the character Cathy just becomes increasingly obnoxious and cruel and this just becomes repetitive and annoying as she has no redeeming features or softness.

Of the new couple Michelle is very good and fits in well but her husband Alan is totally miscast and is unnecessarily crude which is all rather pointless.

I know that it is only TV but there is absolutely no reality in the Michelle / Alan relationship and absolutely no one would put up with Cathy for five minutes. I feel that the writers have nowhere to go with some characters and the really good cast members can only sustain the programme for so long. The writing has to be more focused, funny and less cruel or it will soon end.

Felt like a knock off Gavin and Stacey
absykes24 February 2022
The concept is simple and although overdone has room for many jokes and interesting, funny storylines however every episode I've seen misses the mark. I've seen several wanting to give it a chance but I haven't laughed once. The characters are weak, wanting to be interesting and quirky but are far from it, instead they feel unlikable and weird. The jokes fall flat, due to the delivery or actual writing. The pacing also feels rushed, so does the editing. The storylines are similar, wanting to appear relatable but instead they are repetitive and boring. Wouldn't recommend.

Best sitcom in years
alangmcw-850-64196313 February 2019
I really enjoy this show. It was in series 3 before I discovered it, but I am pleased to see that the earlier series are on the BBC iPlayer for now. I just checked out the pilot episode (from 2013) and enjoyed it hugely too. The writing is brilliant and the casting spot on. Some wonderful performances too, with lots of subtle detail in the body language and such things as just the little glances. Yes, many of the characters are "nightmare neighbours", but this is the fun of it. It may be too "Scottish" or "Glasgow" for some, but I think that the setting is an important part of its humour and charm. I look forward to going back to the earlier series - and hopefully to more to come in the future.

Series 6 Still Brilliant Despite Cathy's Absence.
DucDeRichleau29 November 2022
Yes, you should all know by now that the actress who played Cathy (Doon Mackichan) isn't in the latest series (6). There has been a load of, "Oh woe is me, how will the show survive, etc?" The truth is the show is doing just fine without her. Series 6 is just as funny as any of the other 5. To be honest out of all the characters I found Cathy to be so annoying. In reality no one would put up with her. Her antics where way over the top for my liking. She was crass, vulgar, rude, obnoxious...Oh, I'm drifting here. Long may this show run. So enjoyable. Another hit from the BBC, to go alongside, "Ghosts", and, "Motherland".

Was great at first, still a chance to save it!
thomaspike-854988 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I started binge watching this show from season one, and really enjoyed it a lot. The humour was funny and relatable, and the characters have a few great one liners, especially the Christine character.

Cathy was very entertaining, seemed a bit like my sister at times, although my sister wasn't thrilled at the comparison. However, after season three Cath, who had to be the centre of attention, became more of a scary bully and I actually began to get really annoyed by her antics and that of the neighbours, who just let her walk over them all the time. I was very pleased when Michelle's friend finally clocked Cathy at the end of season four then Gordon did the same to Colin the next season. They got their comeuppance.

Then the Cathy character ran off with a time share rep, was out for season six with the introduction of Ann Marie, a zany but funny addition. The neighbours liked her, she fitted in and Colin was becoming less self centred.

Just as it seemed there were possibilities for development with Ann Marie's son for example, having been talked about during season six, season seven starts by bringing Cathy back in a horribly awkward situation, it was cringy and awful and certainly not funny.

If the producers want to keep the audience engaged they need to get the scriptwriters to have the Cathy character getting less of her own way and more wins for the neighbours, and to keep it funny. Otherwise I just can't watch the Cathy character bully everyone every week, that's just not humorous.

Very Funny Scottish Show
ecana4 February 2021
I brought this dvd randomly on ebay not even realizing that it was a Scottish show. I binged watched the first 3 series and I am now eagerly awaiting the fourth season to arrive . Christine was my favorite character absolutely hilarious. Cathy's character is a bit hard to take , but its funny to she what happens to her along the way. I highly recommend this show .

Utterly dismal, apathetic and incompetent
filmcomedybuff18 October 2017
The fact that the BBC has aired two seasons of this show, with a third on the way, shows how utterly starved they are for comedy, or that the producers there who are commissioning comedy have absolutely no idea what they are doing.

This is an utter embarrassment and a serious contender for the worst sitcom ever made in Britain, along with the other BBC Scotland comedy disaster "Mountain Goats".

Every episode is exactly the same scenario - a scenario that isn't funny to begin with: some trivial event happens, everyone goes to the same house, they talk about things, there's arguing, then it ends. That's it. Every episode features consistent repetition of story information, which is a sure sign of amateur writers, and an attempt to pad out the thinnest of plots to last 30 minutes. It offers no attempt at laughs other than inviting you to sneer at how obnoxious the characters are, or at them doing minor, meaningless tasks that are no doubt supposed to be tough on them.

These are extremely unsympathetic characters. They are unlikeable - behaving spoiled and unaware of their privilege - they have no real problems, they are never in any danger of anything - why are we supposed to care about them? Some episodes will attempt introduce and follow dilemmas, like pregnancy or trying to put down a deposit on a flat, but there is never any real tension or payoff. No identification with characters in a show after 12 episodes can only mean one thing - incompetent writers.

And then there's the comedy, or lack thereof. The show tries hopelessly with every last resort in the book - swear words as punchlines, unsubtle attempts at irony, dilemmas that come out of nowhere with no buildup - to desperately demand laughs from an audience. The attempts at punchlines are lazy, and the situations leading up to them woeful and uninspired. It tries to retain a down-to-earth tone, with no cartoon hi-jinks or farce, but then uses exaggerated characters. The result makes everyone seems like they are overacting, or that the writers ran out of ideas before they even started. Or more likely, they had none to begin with.

This show and Still Game suffer from the same problem: they think simply saying swear words is funny. It's not - it has to be funny for another reason, as well.

In an interview, Arabella Weir told of how Elaine C Smith proudly declared on set "Look at this, three woman together being funny," referring to herself, Weir and Doon Mackinnon (whose performance here is extremely embarrassing), and yet in 12 episodes never offers proof to support that claim. That is the show in a nutshell. The cast and crew were clearly convinced of their own hilarity, and I'm sure had a blast making it, but the end result is a shambles. Perhaps Mark Kermode's adage remains true, that the more fun the creators have making something, the less fun we have watching it. There is a resultant smugness to the show, which never tries and meanders from one meaningless thing to another, hoping that you'll care.

This show has absolutely nothing to say. It offers no insight to its one-dimensional characters, or the Scottish middle-class society it supposedly mocks. It's awkward, aimless and meaningless.

This is an utter waste of time, and viewers deserve much better than this.
