quite charming

In a desert castle, guards and knights defend a glorious pearl. When the castle is attacked by a giant monster, the defenders bravely throw themselves into the battle, determined to die rather than fail...

Short animation movie which shows just how far we've all come in terms of computer-generated imagery. There's a considerable amount of technical mastery involved (do watch the "How we made it" companion piece, it's interesting in its own right). Technical mastery alone does not a good short make, but "Sand Castle" succeeds also on an aesthetic and narrative level. It's quite beautiful to look at - and it tells a short but powerful tale, both about the transience of life, gallantry and devotion and about a child's wondrous power to illuminate everyday reality.

a fairy tale. one of the most convincing. for the sand. for the crab, for the heroic resistance and fragments of shell and inspired fortress and the sacrifice and the memories about testimonies or films of books about Foreign Legion and about Africa or sand storms. more than a film, a gem. with one of the most seductive ends. so, "Chateau De Sable".a short and superb, admirable and fascinating animation.

A five minute epic

Visually impressive short, evoking the vivid imagination of children, where a small story is portrayed in a rather epic manner, akin to the Lord of the Rings: Even when from the very beginning is pretty clear the story of the battle of the sand guardians against the "giant" crab is just imaginary, it feels marvelously intense nonetheless. And the ending sequence is the cherry (Or should I say "marble"?) on top.

From beginning to end, the short is pretty enjoyable experience, mostly thanks to its gorgeous animation, showing once again that even small-scale stories can be just as impressive as big-budget blockbusters.
