A heartfelt tribute from a lovely man
jamiedarlow-3751010 February 2020
A fun documentary from the heart of Mr Jones as a tribute to one of his favourite illustrators. Alfred Bestall was a writer and the artist for the Rupert the Bear stories and here the stories and illustrations are analyses and lovingly explored. There are also compiled interviews with fellow fans of Rupert varying from newspaper editors of the time, Paul McCartney and even Alfred himself. The origins of Rupert are intriguing and details Mary Tourtel, an artist and aviator, who created Rupert bear and wrote the stories in the beginning, then handing the reigns over to Alfred after sadly falling ill. It does occasionally drift off slightly in the interviews with other people who don't quite capture the enthusiasm as much as the documentarian. The most joyful moments of the documentary are of Jones himself reading out the stories he deeply loves and sharing his love to us of this material. It's lovely to see someone so passionate about storytelling and characters and sharing their interest! It's not available on any disc platform as far as I can find but you can find this on YouTube which I'd recommend for any hardcore Jones fans
