Silly, unoriginal, but entertaining enough

Have you ever watched "Indiana Jones"? Or played video games like "Tomb Raider" or "Uncharted"? Or even watched "Relic Hunter" with Tia Carrere? Well, "Hooten & the Lady" is well within this world of treasure hunters, following the steps of the parents of the genre without straying away of the path, at least in this pilot.

Lady Alex Spencer-Parker goes to the Amazon to search for the remnants of the lost explorer Percy Fawcett. Pretty soon she crosses paths with American money-hunter Hooten. They have to team up to stay alive.

Cue adventure in mystery land 101. Nothing is new here: the dynamics between the two characters (rogue and brute male, bookworm and... well, a lady, female), the lost city, the bad guy that wants all for himself... even one that one would expect to have left behind more than 50 years ago: the 'natives', which make a 'comic' appearance.

It comes so close to become too silly and cheesy to be fun. However, it barely keeps all together, with good pace and funny enough banter to be fun, and keeps the viewer's attention interested in the proceedings. But it will have to try harder to be more than just cheesy fun.

Dumb-charted

Warning: Spoilers
Whilst watching this i was reminded of Uncharted, Indiana Jones, Romancing the Stone and those cheesy Richard Chamberlain/Sharon Stone Allan Quatermain films. It tries to have the tone of the Brendan Fraser Mummy movies. but there is one problem. it fails to match any of the aforementioned and instead ends up being more like those cheap Noah Wyle Librarian movies. The banter between Hooten and the Lady feels flat and forced and Michael Landes feels like a poor man's Bruce Campbell but lacking in the charisma. While Ophelia Lovibond as fiercely independent feisty Lady comes across as very unsympathetic and unbelievable. we are expected to believe she is not terrified in opening ten minutes as she is basically hog tied by a bunch of angry natives. There is no sense of danger whatsoever. Even when Hooten gets shot it seems like a mere inconvenience to him. I will give the production kudos for location shooting. Everything looks the part but the parts don't fit together and the result is akin to Relic Hunter or other long forgotten cancelled adventure series. What could have improved this pilot would be a rousing adventure theme like they had in The Lost World TV show from a decade or so ago but the theme tune here is instantly forgettable. They also need to write the heroes to be more likable. The cutaways to London as Lady's co workers worry about her progress seem unnecessary and sap momentum. There is some minor bad language that conflicts with the childish feel of the show but did raise a smile on occasion. Other than that I am really struggling to find positives. This was a deeply unoriginal generic slog that somehow makes finding lost cities a dull experience. No tension, no suspense, no excitement, little action, forced banter, weak villain, poor acting, poor music. very disappointing.

The Amazon
Prismark102 October 2016
Co-created by Tony Jordan who also co-created Life on Mars and Hustle. Jordan also wrote hundreds of episodes of EastEnders.

In fact if someone complained to the BBC that the dialogue in EastEnder's was unrealistic or the episode was so depressing and they should have proper working class people writing for the show, The BBC would respond that Jordan started out as a street market trader. Jordan would add though that his market stall was in Liverpool.

A kind of wit and originality missing in this campy pilot episode which is a rehash of Romancing of the Stone. Someone tell Tony Jordan that the writer of that hit movie purchased a Porsche from her windfall and subsequently died in a car accident.

Lady Alexandra (Ophelia Lovibond) works in the British Museum and ends up going to the Amazon to find the camp of a missing Victorian adventurer who was looking for the fabled city of Eldorado. When we next see her in the jungle you doubt if she ever attended Bear Gryll's very expensive survival courses.

Hooten (Michael Landes) is a rugged adventure with maybe a murky past. He does not like to talk much about himself but I guess he was created in a laboratory where someone spliced the genes of Micheal Douglas and Harrison Ford together missed out on the charisma.

Hooten and Lady team up to escape some natives in the jungle, find Fawcett's camp and then try to evade a dodgy Frenchman. It is a comedy drama that aims to be a guilty pleasure with cheesy dialogue that seems to be aimed at children's television standards.

The first episode was just too derivative and at times lacked excitement despite some good location shooting but also some dodgy green screen work.

Still looking at the trailer for episode 2, It looks like less Romancing the Stone and more The Da Vinci Code.
