Supergirl - S02E04 Survivors
j_forbesy2 November 2016
Supergirl has been a near hit each week this season so I was expecting there to be a slower episode sooner rather than later. This episode was that for me. While it was pumped full of action, it still was a bit of a step down intensity wise. However, despite that, it was still a really good episode that I enjoyed a lot.

I liked how we started with a flash back of Mon-El and his origins. I've always like the use of flash backs in Supergirl because it's usually to fill in the history of a certain character. I really like seeing character's origins and we got another form of origin in Miss Martian, even though it completely got twisted at the end. I though when Martian Manhunter shared his origin, it was one of the most emotional moments of last season, so to get more into the history of the people of Mars was really interesting.

I really liked how they used this episode to build on the relationships that we formed last episode. Keeping with the Martians, I really like how they are starting to build this relationship over this common factor. Now with the reveal that she is actually a white martian, similar to her Young Justice origin, it is going to make a really interesting going forward to see how their dynamic changes and how Martian Manhunter handles it.

The relationship between Alex and Maggie continued to grow this episode. They are making a really great team together and their chemistry is really starting to click. We can see that it is starting to head towards a full on relationship which I think would be pretty interesting for Alex to have a partner in crime both for work and personally.

I thought the Mon-El and Kara relationship is the most interesting because of how they are both reacting to it all. It is really interesting to see Kara have someone other than Superman but at the same time, it cautious towards him because of their planet's history. I'm really looking forward to see how they are going to work in the future once he does get released from the DEO.

As far as the story plot itself this episode, I thought that the fight club stuff was really fun. It really added more to the whole political side of the show with aliens vs humans. That is an overall story I have really liked this season so far and I'm liking the different ways it is being played out each episode.

Overall, another great episode of Supergirl. While it wasn't at the heights and intensities of the previous few, it was a fantastic episode for a needed quiet episode.

What I really love about this season of Supergirl is the continued dedication to character development. Tonight's episode didn't necessarily fix the glaring villain problem on the show, but it definitely shined in the character development department. If for nothing else, this was a great episode about different people with different viewpoints and backgrounds trying to connect with one another.

It was an episode of odd couples as we got to see the duo of Kara & Mon-El, Hank & Miss Martian, Maggie & Alex, and even a scene of Mon-El and Winn. All had a fair share of goodness, but I found myself most interested in Hank's attempt at bonding with Miss Martian. It was the first time we have seen Hank in any sort of positional of weakness as he knows she is the only remaining person of his kind. It's hard not to root for the guy.

It was revealed that she was a part of the underground fighting ring run by a woman named Veronica Sinclair, AKA Roulette. Sure, this whole idea reminded me of the ring in X-Men Apocalypse earlier this year, but I welcome a different villain for this show, especially someone who Kara can't really punch her way through.

Accompanying Supergirl and Alex in these scenes was Maggie Sawyer once again, who's quickly becoming my favorite character on this show. There's something so refreshing about a bada** without powers on this show, and one who can do it in style as well. Which is something Alex seemed keen about, but sadly Maggie is already taken. Even though CW doesn't have the strongest of resumes when it comes to romances, I feel like Maggie and Alex will be a romance that I care about.

I'm not entirely sure what the heck the last scene means. Is Miss Martian completely faking it? Or is that creature just holding her hostage somewhere and disguising himself in her place? No matter, I found myself enjoying tonight's episode a lot, and all of the duo's it presented.

+Hank in a vulnerable position

+All of the duos had some interesting scenes

+Roulette was different

-But she just wasn't all that interesting

-Strange Martian twist at the end

Continues to be a great improvement over last season
scarlettyforest31 October 2016
Episode four of Supergirl season two continues to entertain and hint at a great season to come. The episode introduced fan favourites Roulette and Miss Martian while simultaneously furthering character arcs with fun scenes.

While Roulette's debut on Supergirl was rather procedural, the writer's managed to created a confident portrayal of the character with some good dialogue and a promise of a future conflict between Kara and her. As for M'gann, maybe its the young justice fan in me, but I'm not really loving her grittier portrayal, but even in spite of that, the writers have done a good job of keeping me invested. Her interactions with J'onn compliment each other's characters rather well by enriching their believability as the last survivors of Mars, and it was nice to learn more about Martian culture.

The standouts for this episode were primarily from the fun character moments between Mon-El, Winn and Kara. Chris Wood's portrayal of the Daxamite continues to leave me entertained and intrigued about this season's direction, and the writers are doing a great job of making me care about the character. I'd also like to say hats off to the writers and new staff for vastly improving upon last season's tedious drama. Not only is it fun to watch these kind of fun scenes like Winn and Mon-El hitting up the National City bars, but they in turn favour the show when more serious subjects are introduced because the audience cares about the characters.

All up:

+ Miss Martian / Martian Manhunter

+ Mon-El

+ Journalist Kara and Snapper Carr

+ Maggie Sawyer and Alex are growing on me ;)

-Still unsure of Lena Luthor's position in the show

-M'gann's characterization may disappoint Young Justice fans

-Could have had a stronger introduction to Roulette

It was still a really enjoyable episode: 8.2/10

Worst episode of the entire show

Warning: Spoilers
I love this show. I love Supergirl/Kara/Melissa and the whole feel of the show. I rate most episodes 9 stars out of 10, and it's competing with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. about being the single best superhero show out there. The first three episodes of season 2 have surprised me by being as strong as the excellent season 1 despite moving to a network that produces far soapier and sappier shows than ABC, and I sure hope the show-runners can keep it up.

Sadly, episode 4 was substandard to me. This whole alien fight club thing just makes absolutely zero sense. Maybe they just used it because there is something like it in the comics, but it doesn't work in the world of the TV show. Why exactly would the super-powered aliens be fighting gladiatorial battles for the entertainment of humans? Why wouldn't the aliens at least be organizing it themselves? The episode offers no convincing explanations.

Megan's true nature was predictable from the moment she explained about her origin - how stupid does Hank have to be to not see that? The show seems to be entering the dreaded soapy territory of the CW network, as also witnessed by the interrupted romantic tension between Alex and Maggie. Would it kill CW to have just one proper process of courtship and dating without having to introduce annoying emotional anxiety that will be prolonged for however long? Stay the hell away from formulaic storytelling in this show, dammit!

The rest of the episode was okay. Mon-El and Win had a fun time and Kara is starting to set aside her cultural prejudice about Daxamites. Now all we need to know is whether Mon-El is a regular guy (and an obvious love interest for Kara now that they flushed the other love interest out of her life) or has some kind of villainous hidden agenda...

7 stars out of 10 this time. I pray it's back to 8 or 9 next time! I hope the show stays strong.
