And So the Crossover Begins...
ThomasDrufke28 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The Crossover begins. Or I guess, it sort of started, considering Flash and Cisco appeared at the very end of the episode. Luckily, I didn't really expect there to be much crossover at all tonight as Supergirl is on a different earth entirely.

With that said, this episode was actually quite good on its own. In fact, it felt much more like a midseason finale episode than it did the first part of a 4 night crossover. It almost begs the question whether this episode would have been better served leading us into the long 4-6 week break we expect with CW shows. Cadmus and Cyborg Superman made another big play, the romances flourished, heck even the entire alien population was threatened.

I feel like this show is finally starting to do well in the villain department. Calling him Cyborg Superman is one of the show's stupidest ideas, but Harewood's performance continues to carry that character through some rough scenes. I'm also opening up to Lillian Luthor's presence, or rather, her and Lena's relationship going forward. Not only was I cheering when it was revealed that Lena double crossed her own mother, but I'm fascinated with what could be a very interesting dynamic for the rest of the season. Will Lena stay on Kara's side? Or will she ultimately stay true to her villainous family roots and work with Cadmus?

It was thanksgiving this week and the Danvers family welcomed Eliza back for a meal and some help at the DEO. This gave Alex a chance to open up to her mother about being gay. I really liked how the writers handled those scenes. It was a lot less clumsy than the scenes written a few weeks back with Kara, as well as having some heartwarming touches to it as well. I also thought the scenes between Alex and Maggie were written nicely.

At this point, I embrace how cheesy this show is. But I feel like this season it's a lot easier to get invested in the characters who are saying these cheesy lines. So I can acknowledge that both the "Sanvers" relationship and Kara and Mon-El's are made for teenagers, but it's cute enough to pass my test. I think that if I wasn't watching this show regularly, these romances would turn me off, but instead I'm invested.

Finally, Flash made his long-awaited appearance in Kara's apartment. It was quite humorous seeing the portal appear several times throughout the episode only to finally succeed within the last two minutes of the show. But I didn't necessarily need him to appear any earlier. A nice parallel arc between Lena and Kara, nice romances, and solid action was all I needed. Looking forward to tomorrow night.

+Sanvers

+Nice episode without a ton of crossover

+Lena double cross

+Cadmus is becoming a more intriguing presence

Supergirl – S02E08 Medusa
j_forbesy29 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not going to lie, I was let down by this episode. The main reason because was this was meant to be night 1 of 4 of the Superhero crossover and, well it wasn't. It was just a regular Supergirl episode that had a hint that Earth 1 needs help, similar to what we got in the last 30 seconds of Legends of Tomorrow in their previous episode. I knew that because Supergirl isn't on the same Earth as the other shows that it was going to be a bit harder linking them together but I figured we were going to get something similar to what we got during season 1 with the Flash crossover where Barry appears at the start of the episode and we get an episode of the two on screen.

Stepping away from the crossover aspect though and focusing it more as a regular episode which is was, this was a terrific episode. There's no doubt about that. I think before the crossover was planned, this episode was written as a big episode because it certainly had qualities of a mid season finale or an episode that takes place right before the dramatic ending.

After getting to the end of this episode, I think it is clear with what this episode will be remembered for, and that is the original Hank Henshaw, now Cyborg Superman, fight against his imposter, our Martain Manhunter. By far, I this is one of my favourite action sets that Supergirl have ever produced, and I think a large part of that was because of the personnel fighting in it. I also loved seeing what I am now calling Mix Martain Manhunter. Seeing the White Martian figure and appearance but with that green skin looked fantastic and incredibly scary that he could have easily turned up as the big bad of alien villains.

Despite what was a fantastic set piece of a fight in the third act, what did stand out to me the most was that we are starting to see many story arcs that have been set up the past few weeks start to move out of the introductory phase. In this episode we finally got to see both Alex and Maggie accept each other and in many ways bite the bullet in taking a leap into a proper relationship. I've said in past reviews that I've really enjoyed the story arc because of how much I've enjoyed Alex as a character, so I'm excited to see how this will effect her and hopefully they don't add to much drama to it.

As mentioned before, in this episode Martain Manhunter is seen as a mix between a Green and White Martain, where he has yet to completely transform from one to the other. While he is cured by the end of the episode, it's something that happens in the final fight that stood out to me and that was him transforming and accepting his new martian form. After seeing his reaction to the news that he was turning into a White Martain, I figured that he would struggle to accept Miss Martain's apology. Instead in this episode we saw him accept his fate, something that I think from a mental point of view of the character, will create a new perspective of Miss Martain. For me it is too early to know if we are going to ship these two together or they are going to play that uncle/niece role, but either way, I saw this episode as a big step in their relationship.

Talking about shipping characters together, Kara and Mon-El. Out of all the newer relationships, this is the one I am honestly less interested in and I think that is partly because they built up Kara and Jimmy so much through season 1 that when it was canned, it left us with an empty feeling. However, I do like the angle they are taking with Kara and Mon-El and how they are about to connect over their similarities to each other. I'm interested to see whether their kiss will be brought to the surface later in the season. I interpreted the scene when Mon-El has recovered that he remembers what happened between them and he was testing to see if Kara would admit it or not. While on the topic of Mon-El, I'm not quite sure who those other aliens were who are hunting him down, but for me it appears that Cadmus might not be the biggest bad this season and Mon-El might be hiding a secret or two about his past life on Daxin.

Overall, this was a great Supergirl episode that suffered from the burden of having to be linked to the crossover, which evidently effected it in the long run. If they had taken a week out where Supergirl travels to Earth 1 and this was the episode we got next week, this may as well have been a home run, but because it wasn't, it falls short of what we were promised.

The last alien standing
tenshi_ippikiookami3 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Supergirl" offers a fun episode with this one, which kind of kicks off a crossover with other shows about DC characters "The Flash", "Arrow" & "Legends of Tomorrow".

CADMUS seems intent of getting rid of all alien life. They release a virus in the bar that has become the center of alien night life in this second season. All but Mon-El die, but he gets a little bit sick. It seems that Cyborg Superman used Supergirl's blood to go to the Fortress of Solitude and get a virus Supergirl's father worked on. How CADMUS has been so fast to change the virus so it doesn't kill Kryptonians and humans, well, that is not important. Supergirl will try to stop Cyborg Superman and CADMUS before they release the virus all over the city (how come there are so many aliens now?). Will Lena Luther help her? Wil Mon-El survive? What is that strange phenomena that seems to be happening around Supergirl (that we all know is Cisco trying to open a portal to her world)?

The episode is a very focused one, even with its shortcomings. It follows a quite linear development, but it does it well and the character's development is interesting. The action scenes still leave a lot to be desired, but that seems to be a problem of the show for a while, now. But even bland-looking Mon-El gets some life (I wonder if Chris Wood is bored of being almost every episode strapped to a bed, sick).

And the end brings our friends Flash and Cisco to ask for Supergirl's help. It's actually a pity that they don't appear before, and help her. It would have been great to see them team up with her, but the teasing throughout the episode keeps the viewer guessing about their sure to be appearance, so when they do, we feel that is a little bit too little too late. At least it offers a glimpse into a superhero team up for the other DC show's episodes.

TV History.
alexdanvers29 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Supergirl made television history on this episode. First we have the Danvers family with Winn, James and Mon-El having Thanksgiving together. Pretty normal. Then we have Alex walking past Winn and stealing his beer telling the boys (James and Winn) not to tell Kara that James is the Guardian and well the boys are upset. Understandably so. Next we have Kara taking Alex's beer, telling her no and putting it in her freezer. What does Alex do? She sneaks behind Kara and Eliza to grab not the bottle of beer that Alex pilfered from Winn but a bottle of bourbon. Bring on Alex the alcoholic because next we see her sitting at the head of the table opposite Eliza drinking a glass of red wine. What's next at Danvers family Thanksgiving? Oh that's right Mon-El shows up with a bag of stuffing. He doesn't show up with regular stuffing though he shows up with mattress stuffing. Now we have Kara's tradition of what are we all thankful for. Alex, James, and Mon-El all start to stand up when James starts saying how thankful he is to have someone as understanding as Kara in his life only to be interrupted by Alex telling him no she's not understanding. And poor Alex always getting interrupted by something is trying to come out to her family is interrupted by a tear in the space time continuum. Skip to the middle of the episode and we have confident, out and proud lesbian Maggie Sawyer getting shot by a laser from Cyborg Superman's eye but we won't talk about him. Thankfully Maggie is only injured not killed because next we see Alex stitching Maggie back up in the DEO and talking about how she is now proud of her new normal. Maggie is just laying there giving Alex heart eyes and smart ass comments. After Alex puts Maggie back together we see Alex trying to come out to her mother. The operative word being trying because she isn't doing too well. After Alex flounders about for a bit Eliza asks Alex if this has anything to do with Maggie because she mentions her a lot. Alex just stares at her. Eliza then proceeds to tell Alex how she is still so proud of her and that she new Alex would never have a regular life because she is Exceptional. Fast forward to the end of the episode and we have Alex sitting in her apartment having a nightcap when Maggie shows up with pizza and beer. How awesome is Maggie? Anyways back to the lesbian goodness. Alex lets Maggie in saying just ignore the pajamas who then comments on her pajamas saying that they are cute. Maggie starts pacing about Alex's apartment saying that 'life is short and that we should kiss the girls we want to kiss'. She then proceeds to say that she really wants to kiss Alex then does just that. Maggie grabs Alex's face and proceeds to kiss her. After the kiss Alex says to Maggie 'so you're saying you like me?' Maggie responds with her own special version of yes and the two kiss again with Alex moving Maggie's hair out of her face and then kissing Maggie.
