The Racial "Joke-off" Is Only Funny Scene...
MovieHoliks6 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I managed to see this brand-new Crackle original comedy the other day. Charlie Sheen and Leah Remini head up a cast of 3 families of different racial backgrounds who compete for a camping spot on one 4th of July weekend, and all chaos ensues. Dennis Quaid has a little cameo as the park ranger, and producer David Spade as an intervention specialist. LOL

I managed to chuckle a few times throughout this, particularly at the series of racial jokes in the "joke-off" scene, but other than that, this is a pretty forgettable and unfunny film. I read one IMDb user say it best I guess -- which it's "not bad for free". I sure wouldn't pay to see this.. LOL

in need of smarter writing
SnoopyStyle6 December 2017
It's July 4th weekend. Various families of different ethnicities arrive at camping site 16. A paper work mistake left the three families stuck with one camp ground. They try to share at first but tension rises. The ranger suggests a competition for the winner to stay and kicking out the other two families.

The premise has possibilities until the lazy competition idea is injected into the script. I don't know much about Fred Wolf but he seems to be the head SNL writer for awhile. This has that silly skit pitch concept that he and David Spade expanded into a full movie. At least, Spade is not acting in this. Instead of trying for smart inter-racial writing, they go for cheap jokes that don't really work and a clunky concept. The directing is poor and the writing is muddled. There is a repetitiveness to scenes with two characters coming to some profound understanding of race and life. In addition, I don't want to watch Charlie Sheen anymore although this has a few good comedians. The kids could have been a good way to contrast the generations but they aren't particularly effective actors. There are too many characters and this is in need of some smarter writing.

Not so good as i expected

Warning: Spoilers
OK, so let's begin. This movie is worse than a YouTube 20 seconds advertise. Everything begins so spontaneous that you don't get to remember the characters. The movie has a story ? Wow... about 3 families, Mexican family ; white family and black family. I'm sorry writers but you forgot to add a new family.. the Chinese family because why not? I give the movie 3 stars because Charlie Sheen plays in it and i love the actor, that's all. He still use that ,,Charlie Harper" character style and i love it. The actors ain't that bad.

Not even Charlotte McKinney can save this piece of crap.
Ghenghy17 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Big Charlie Sheen fan here, he's completely wasted in this flick. Defitelyu worthy of Crackle, but not worthy of your time. Dennis Quaid makes a funny cameo, and McKinney makes for some good eye candy when she's not bitching at Charlie or making ugly faces, but this thing is just not funny.

"We have become a nation of soft pussy people." OK, thats the highlight of the movie. You've been warned.

Warning: Just because you're funny on SNL doesn't mean you can write a comedy movie script.
mcphersonbob20 January 2017
I'd hate to begin with the cliché 'this is the worst movie ever made,' but this movie (if you can call it that) is certainly in the running. Who knows? Maybe David Spade still believes he has talent and is writing another one that sinks even lower than this debacle, or any of his other box office blunders. He seems dead set on reaching the bottom of the moviedom barrel, and by God, if he can somehow summon all his writing talent, I believe he'll get there.

The film's cast is made up of C, D, and no list celebrities, and Charlie Sheen should have stuck with what he does best . . . whatever that is. Honestly, I haven't seen the ending, and there is no such thing as a 'spoiler alert' with this little gem. There is nothing to spoil. If you do happen to get to the ending before you throw yourself out a window, let me know if we ever get to see the busty blond in a bikini. A little gratuitous skin would certainly lift the artistic integrity of this masterpiece to a whole new level of 1 star entertainment.

Not grown ups
niyahsnewacc16 April 2021
I thought It was going to be a lower quality version of grown ups and it wasn't at all. There was an unfunny race joke every 5 minutes and Naya Rivera was the only saving grace. I couldn't get past the 24 minute mark before I shut it off. The entirety of the movie I was so uninterested and unentertained I was actually planning my dinner.

This is just bad...
zemogdani22 April 2018
Of course it's on Crackle. They have a couple of gems on Crackle the rest is.....whatever. It's no longer a wonder why I've never heard of this movie; especially given that Tiffany Haddish is hot right now and Leah Remini's show is popular as well. Unfortunately, this is just really bad, like freshman undergrad my first assignment film....

Is there a bottom below the bottom...?
imseeg29 November 2023
Whooah, that did hurt. Watching this is really painful because of the terrible (new low?) in lame "jokes" that are SO NOT funny that it really becomes embarrassing to watch.

I really like Charlie Sheen as an actor, it was him that made me decide to watch this "comedy". As a surprise I saw Dennis Quaid as well, both were (and still are) great actors, but this movie didnt gave them a chance to excell.

That's putting it in a polite manner that this is one big flop from start till finish and the only reason both Charlie Sheen and Dennis Quaid are starring in it is because of money troubles.

Well, I am gonna watch an old eighties classic with both these stars in it, to forget the bitter taste this flop left in my mouth....

Movie is good people, do not listen to the "critics" that left bad reviews.
ZeroCoolRO22 July 2019
Sometimes I think that not everyone should leave reviews on IMDb. I think you need first to pass some IQ test or something. The score for this movie is way to low, this here is a 6.50 movie ... Some of you probably found those jokes way to racist or something, I really dont know what is in your head. Movie is good, stfu and watch or go back to My Little Pony.

I usually stick even a bad movie out. Even a terrible hallmark movie. This movie broke me. So so bad.

Very funny. Should be a TV show.
familygamesandthings7 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know what these other reviewers are talking about. This was a very funny show. I was laughing out loud several times. I thought it was well written and excellent acting. The entire cast stood out and I can't really name one that was better than another. I liked them all. The girl putting Bactine on the guy with the antenna sticking out of him was hilarious. The kids coming up with acceptable swear words. David Spade as the intervention counselor. All hilarious stuff. It's kind of like a more real version of Modern Family. It needs to be a weekly TV show.

VIEWS ON FILM review of Mad Families
burlesonjesse523 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I met Clint Howard in South Bend, Indiana during a film festival. It was three years ago. He's a nice guy. Therefore, I wish I could go back in time to tell him not to appear in 2017's Mad Families (my latest review).

So OK, what do you get when you put Charlie Sheen, Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite, Howard, Leah Remini, Barry Shabaka Henley, and Chris Mulkey in a quasi-movie together? Well, you get the weirdest casting combo since 2004's Wild Hogs. You also get one of the most annoying films this side of last year's Undrafted. I ranked Undrafted the worst piece of cinematic crap via 2016. It's only March but Mad Families might take 2017's Razzie prize come December.

Oh I almost forgot, Dennis Quaid is sadly featured in a cameo during the ninety minute running time of "Families" (seventy-five if you take out the commercials and end credits). He plays a park ranger who slurps rum and views porn. I'm gonna have to watch him in Breaking Away just to get those images out of my head. Ugh.

Anyway, "Families" is about three families comprised of African Americans, Hispanics, and Caucasians. They have similar last names and because of a computer error, they all book the same camp site on a hot Fourth of July weekend. These socially inept weirdos have a competition and whoever wins said competition, gets to stay and take in the leafy wilderness at Site 16. IMDb doesn't indicate where the proceedings were shot but hey, who cares. Oh and "Families" doesn't have an MPAA rating but I'll go with a hard PG-13. Again, who cares.

Cultural tensions, ratings, and sparkler holidays aside, Mad Families is a so- called comedy about race and it feels really dated. Characters bicker, fight aimlessly, tell jokes, and project themselves as total buffoons. I wanted to slap these hackneyed characters and the actors who play them. Are these troupers appearing in "Families" strictly for the paycheck? Maybe. Are they embarrassing themselves regardless? Yup.

What's worse is that this flick's production company (Crackle), appears on screen via the lower right-hand corner throughout. I don't think I've ever seen that in a movie before. Pretty lame and tacky if you ask me. Bottom line: Mad Families as an Internet release, should've never been made. David Spade co-wrote the script and you wish that he could just go back to being on the canceled sitcom, Rules of Engagement. Nevertheless, my rating is one star only because I don't give zero stars to anything. After all, making a film is hard work even if it sucks as much as this drivel.

Let's tackle racism. Again and again and again
erikboet26 October 2021
Very very very bad. Like every woke movie. It's for the whole length of the film: be aware of your race!

And ofcourse whites and males must be downgraded.

Disgusting all the way....

seriously? how did this film get the greenlight?!
kamooremitch5 April 2019
This is hands down one of the worst films ever made. i only heard about it because of Leah Remini but there are several other actors//comedians i love (Lil Rel, Tiffany Hadish) so i thought i would be in for a solid straight-to-DVD but wow i've never been so wrong.

right from the start you see the entire comedy framework is built on racial stereotypes and tired tropes, which would be fine if...the movie was funny even a little bit. instead, what you get is some of the worst writing to ever make it to screen.

don't be surprised if you find yourself asking how and why some of these actors said yes to this film. these aren't all has-been or D-list actors, they're great performers with heavy weight credits to their name but my lord, if i was them i'd take this one off of my resume.

it's obvious there's quite a bit of improv. improv is fine it just...shouldn't be as obvious as it is in this film. the writing makes the actors look less talented than they are.

this is also proof that all comedy isn't created equal; being funny on stage doing standup or in short skits doesn't automatically mean you'll be able to handle comedy on screen. the comedic timing in some of these scenes was awful, making them painful to watch.

there's one positive: Tiffany Haddish + Leah Remini play very well together! pretty sure they were improving as well, however it worked. it was believeable, they didn't fight for screen time or step on each other, they just play well together, so much so that i would love to see them in a future project together.

my recommendation is to avoid this film. but if you've already seen it, or for some reason you must, request a refund. even if you didn't pay for it, you deserve to be compensated for your time.

Huh?
savanaraef8 August 2021
This movie was horrible. Terrible acting. Stupid story line.

The whole movie is just a race competition, that's literally the story line. Nobody can act in this movie too.

It's supposed to be a comedy but I did not laugh ONCE.

Just because you're somewhat funny on SNL doesn't mean you can act and be in a low budget film Sad to see that this horrendous film was Naya Rivera's last. RIP.

Wow ...it's BAD!
CineMasters1 November 2022
Bed acting, bad writing, bad timing, zero efects. In other words BAD DIRECTOR.

So many talent wasted ! You have a bunch of good actors in the adult group and then you mix them with some new and amateur actors in the kids group and with bad lines. DISASTER !

Don't waste your time watching it! It's really a bad, bad, bad, bad movie!

It says here that the director was the writer of some Hollywood hits ????

The script looks very bad and very wrong, making fun off every group maybe could it work if it was well manage. There are some bad jokes and in the movie and also some used in so many movies before.

BAD.

I was wondering why. Never heard of this movie. Then I watched it
craigmbriggs16 August 2021
Just trying to hard in all fronts, trying to be funny, trying to cure racism and none of it works. There is some talent in this movie but it just does not work in any level. Just bad, a few minor laughs.

It's entertaining
dequalizer22 December 2023
I don't understand why people are so harsh about this movie. It's not super funny but it's ok to watch and crack a few smiles.

The racist jokes are actually pretty mild and the message is not woke as some reviews say, it's actually the opposite, people of different races and cultures having fun together, just like the old days before all the snowflakes and politicians started with the divisive rhetoric about race and gender.

Watch the movie with an open mind and enjoy life , stop being so judgmental.

Btw it's nice to see Charlie sheen on screen again but he has to stop playing the two and a half men character, kind of boring.
