A (reasonably) well-garnished Onam feast! [+63%]
arungeorge133 September 2017
How an upper middle-class, slightly dysfunctional Christian family deals with the scenario of the mom character developing breast cancer, narrated in a thoroughly feel-good, jovial manner is what 'Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela' is all about. While there's not much newness to boast of in terms of storyline, the endearing performances from the ensemble makes the movie worth watching.

We do see a good bunch of 'Premam' actors returning in some role either on or behind the screen. For instance, the movie is directed by Althaf Salim, the guy who play's Mary's friend in 'Premam', while Mary's boyfriend is the co-writer (along with the director) and plays a minuscule role in the movie as well. There's Siju Wilson and Krishna Sankar in prominent supporting roles. Oh yes, Sharafudheen pops up in the second half to kindle a few laughs.

While the makers would like to market 'Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela' essentially as a Nivin Pauly vehicle, this movie doesn't solely ride on his charm. When Sheela (a returning Shanthi Krishna who still retains her mature-woman appeal at 52) is diagnosed with breast cancer, her husband Chacko (Lal) undergoes sleepless nights. Their son Kurien (Pauly) flies all the way down from London but is not exactly told the reason for his urgent home-coming which he misinterprets as a plan to get him married.

The scene-stealers here are Lal who is in terrific form, Saiju Kurup as Sheela's oncologist who makes us smile/laugh with his responses to the queries from the family members and lastly, K L Antony Kochi (who we saw earlier in 'Maheshinte Prethikaaram') playing the grandpa who mouths some non-sensical lines. The theme (on cancer diagnosis and treatment) is in fact a grim one, but the writers do not wish to unleash a truckload of sentiments on the viewer and make them seek tissues. Instead, they cleverly conjure up a tale that is pretty even in terms of its humor, romance and realism.

The movie even questions the ethics of Kurien getting involved in a romance (with a girl he meets at the cancer centre, of all places) while his mom is at the peak of her ailment. But the approach taken by the makers is fresh enough not to make it seem like some grave offence. Ahaana, Srinda and Aishwarya Lekshmi manage to do justice to their respective roles although they are not really the most memorable ones.

Nivin is fantastic in his lazy-boy persona (the comic timing is awesome too!) while he is found to repeat some of his lover-boy expressions from earlier films. However, even in his home production, he doesn't seem to find it problematic when scenes are stolen from right under his nose by his co-stars. On the downside, there's absolutely nothing unpredictable about the movie. Even the stretched climax serves little purpose. While some of the clichés we usually associate in a comedy/drama such as this are subverted neatly, some seem too integral to the plot to be done away with. P.s - I was almost instantaneously reminded of the movie '50/50' and the way it projected the vulnerability as a positive outcome of becoming a strong-willed survivor.

This movie is bound to impress most film-goers for its confident acceptance of inherent goodness in human beings and the maintenance of an overall positive vibe even during the most trying of times.

Verdict: Breezy performances and feel-good factor major pluses in an otherwise foreseeable screenplay!

"A good movie, family entertainer awesome for a one time watch"
vishnu-dileep0822 September 2017
This movie is the story of Kurian Chacko who comes back from London to his gods own country Kerala and that's where a new and interesting chapter of his life opens up.

The story line in this movie was sweet and simple with perfect characters. It covered up the genres of comedy and romance perfectly. There is a lot to laugh in this movie as nothing was done as an over do. I cannot pick out notable acting for this movie as all of them were one better than other. This movie has a great message hidden and is sure it's going to be an eye opener for each and every family. And to talk about the songs each of them were catchy with really simple lyrics and music. Overall this movie was a wonderful treat.

Yes I would recommend everyone to watch this movie.

Light Hearted, Warm Family Drama
OnjiMooteDaMarle14 February 2018
The film revolves around Kurien who has returned from London for a specific reason or that is what he assumes it to be. From there on, the film takes a single track on the core issue the story deals with. A sweet family drama (produced by Nivin Pauly) with funny dialogues in place. But I wasn't impressed with the screenplay in the first half and hence the 6 stars. The first half was a drag. The second half was good and never bores. Worth watching it with family.

Surprisingly good take on Cancer
Jithindurden30 January 2018
The film takes a serious issue like Cancer and gave a feel good treatment, surprisingly it works pretty well. Even though the situations have been developed in a way that a lot of factors are already in support of the characters, the positive attitude taken by the characters is something to be showcased in our world and it never crossed the line of believability either.

Please dont waste your time.

Pros 1. Talented line of actors 2. Good theme

Cons 1. Poor execution 2. Unwanted lagging throughout

Who said lagging is required to make the movie more touching? Bullshit. Utter waste of time it was.

A refreshing take on life
byjuvtvm14 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A film with a life threatening disease at its center, but not at all a tear-jerker, far from it. It is a refreshing comedy. It is only rarely one can see a film that generates comedy in such dark situation. But it is not dark comedy. The film deals with how a family comes to terms with the mother fighting cancer. The story is told in a light way, with even serious situations generating a laugh or two. The women are strong whereas the men falter. The comedy is mostly situation comedy. That too is a departure from the common slap stick variety familiar to Malayalam audience. It can also be described as a feel-good movie.

A Little Too Lighter Than Air
toreachthesky15 March 2018
I saw some high ratings for the film and decided it must be great. After all it has Nivin Pauly and much of the Premam cast in it. However after watching the movie i realized maybe i shouldn't have judged it too quick.

From the beginning to the end, there were moments when i felt i was searching for the plot since maybe the creators forgot to include it in somehow (dont know how but they did it!)

It really seemed to drag on for an entirety until the end arrived and i realized i'm still searching for the story. (where, where was it?) Felt quite a bit like an empty pizza box.

There are gentle bits of traditional Nivin-Pauly-and-friends humour and i did enjoy most of the acting but in the end, there is a certain point when you realize a completely realistic film might not be a completely enjoyable and appropriate one for the topic it deals with. In giving a glimpse of a normal family faced by a grave issue, this seemed to handle it too lightly with unexpected jolts of misery and gloom which then followed with more humor and light-heartedness when it seemed frankly inappropriate. It was pretty ridiculous if i'm being honest and really affected the quality of the film.

So in conclusion, yes, for me, this was a little too lighter than air.

Good movie but not an entertainer
sumeshsvv22 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I went to watch this movie with family after reading good reviews online. To be frank , For us who expected an entertaining comedy during onam week, it was a real tragedy. Film was really boring except few scenes especially in the start and climax. Yes, this film is discussing a serious subject now society should think about ,but it failed to be a movie. It was supposed to be a shortfilm only. Good attempt Altaf & team.expecting more from you team.

Not that great
suneethanairkm12 January 2018
Maybe I went with a lot of expectations. I didnt find it that entertaining. I think only because of Shanthi Krishna, I would give it even a rating of 5. The overall message of the movie is good and a must watch, but scenes dragged and Nivin Pauly was not upto expectations.
