It's not The Raid. But it's good enough.
ThomDerd26 May 2021
It's definitely a good martial arts/ action film but not as good as the 2 Raid films which are kind of similar style to this one.

E.g Some reviewers say that's the raid 3 but it is not. It's story and characters are unrelated.

It's mostly different because It Lacks Pace.

Also it looses points because of the effort to give some depth in the characters and a background story, which doesn't really work well here and makes the film longer than it should be.

However, it's still a relentless and impressive action film with a couple of memorable fight scenes.

Violence and gore are everywhere but somewhat less than the Raid. Still, be prepared.

But if you really like this film and have not seen the Raid yet...you d better get to it!

And if you're thinking if you should watch this film but still haven't seen the Raid... then skip this and start first with the Raid!

6,9/10 Iko Uwais is a master of the arts n crafts.

Chop chop chippity chop chop...

You think you've seen it all? Action, blood, guts, brains, bullets, body parts, broken teeth, sliced fingers, chopped heads, smashed heads, broken skulls, broken bones, protruding bones, hmmm? Think you've seen it all? SMH ... you haven't... until you watch this film.

Watchers beware, this film is not for the faint of heart. If you plan on becoming an active war medic, or a member of the cartel torture squad... well you get my point. ..

martial art gorefest 10/10 with a bland character script.
HotDoggyBoomBooM20 October 2018
WATCH THIS MOVIE IT's WORTH FOR THE ACTION AND GORE Yes when i heard the name iko uwais new movie is out on netflix i just jumped into it cause even though story is weak his actions his enough to steer through and i was kinda disappointed in this .not here to spoil the show but here's how it goes if you have seen these movies headshot (DIR & PRO made this flick) ,raid 1&2 you might have seen how quick and agile group of minion thugs wielding machete are ..but here they made it like some sort of horde waiting for the cast( not here to spoil) to make the next move and yeah to be killed eventually but here is the catch after 1 or 2 fighting scene you can see that they made these cast like meat shield absorbing more than 3 or 7 maybe even more death blows only to be killed by enemy boss Eventually sigh:( it bugs me the most to say that it was like some martial art tournament game strong vs strong which we could forsee it already with a story so vague i cant expect more . GORE PART: only word i can say is daaaaaaaaam and brutal junks of flesh flying & lying everywhere coupled with vicious martial arts and weaponry which is a huge + and a treat to watch if you love gore of course.

I really cant hate this movie and it's hard to see martial arts flicks like these so yeah do watch it..

The "Violence" Comes for Us on Netflix
bakerstreet-862-61284020 October 2018
The Night Comes For Us had always been in my movie watch list since it's been announced in 2014 after Mo Brothers released Killers. It planned to involve some of "The Raid" series veterans like Joe Taslim as the main character, Arifin Putra seemed to be the main antagonist, and Yayan Ruhian as an undisclosed role. The project was then somehow put to halt for some reasons and Mo Brothers went on another project which's Headshot (2016) and there's a plan of The Night Comes For Us being adapted into a graphic novel instead. After the release of Headshot, it turned out only 1 of Mo Brothers, Time who's gonna continue and direct The Night Comes For Us and it seemed Iko Uwais & Sunny Pang're replacing Arifin & Yayan.

It's a well known plot formula about a bad guy/henchman who seeks a redemption after meeting an innocent child. Many interesting characters, the small ones as well. Particularly are the main characters, Ito played by Joe. Joe did a good job to be the lead bad-ass protagonist but quite standard, i must say. Arian played by Iko is definitely the most interesting character, he has the most thorough back story that gives him a moral questions, which surprised me. Clearly not your usual villain type of character. And there's the Operator played by Julie Estelle the badass babe, a mysterious female character who can kick some serious butts. I'd agree wholeheartedly with some other viewers who suggest that The Operator must have her own movie. Just off the top of my head, i think it's my most favourite female character from action films with gore. I want to see the character again with more screen time.

The action is very bloody and brutal, it has a good usage of some of the stuff that we usually see around and they're being well implemented to add more pain. The plot's good enough, it has a 50:50 balance between dialogs and action scenes as the main highlights. It has plenty of great "Ouch" & "Wth" moments for the viewers, however i must say there are some bits that are just too appropriate & convenient for a film. And i'm not talking about the use of weapons and firearms but some of the approaches that the goons use to attack. I'd assume that it's typical in films when there are multiple attackers but somehow it's just too comical and laughable for me. The amazing choreographed fights, love them. The final fight gets very technical, 100% a real treat for martial arts film fans. It's also rather refreshing to hear more Indonesians not only use Indonesian language but also foreign languages such as English, Chinese, & a bit of French too and they're not so forced but rather fitting for the plot. It might be a little nuisance to some of the native speakers to understand what they're saying but subtitles always help. This film is definitely set to have a sequel, just by mentioning things that can be explored more such as "Old Tiger", "Six Seas", and for sure, the ending.

I'd say this movie tops Timo's previous action film and it is recommended especially for those who are familiar & interested with contemporary Indonesian action films, even those who are just big fans of action slasher films may appreciate it.

A very well done action film.

I miss Gareth Evans
fits-4701912 November 2018
Contrary to what you may have heard, sadly, this is NOT Raid 3, despite featuring most of the cast of that franchise. Therefore the inevitable comparisons only lead you to disappointment. The Night Comes for Us has all the insanity of the first raid movie, but none of the cinematic feel or plot coherence of the second. Compared to every other action movie this year, this is firmly at the top, but compared to the mastery of Raid 2, this is quite a letdown. You will still have a good time if you ignore the story and just focus on the action as I did (most of the fight scenes are topnotch) but in your heart and in the back of your mind, you will still be wishing Gareth Evans comes back to direct Raid 3.

Makes John Wick look like child's play.
lebronjamesisaloser21 October 2018
I am going to keep this review nice and short. If you don't mind over-the-top violence and appreciate action movies then this movie is, plainly put, the best action movie of all time. That's right, I said it.

This is the Raid 3 in essence and if you like the first two movies then this movie is a must-watch for fans.

Amazing fight chirography and the action sequences are amazing.

Loved every bit of the 120 minutes running time.

We need to thank the film makers, actors and Netflix for bringing this to us. Easily the best Netflix in its history so far.

A solid 10/10. Watch it for yourself.

Who Needs The Raid 3?
Gresh85422 October 2018
Yes, yes, I'll answer the question you'll have on your minds. And the answer is an affirmative, courteous AMEN cause the action in The Night Comes for Us is miraculous. This is A+, 10/10, The Raid level of action prowess. It's untoward however, that such an astonishing assemblage of top-notch combat spectacle was brewed with such an insipid and often, inattentive story. That's still not to say though, that I didn't thoroughly savor the heck out of a bulk of this movie's runtime.

It may be an irrefutable case that the storyline in The Night Comes for Us is underdeveloped, foreseeable, banal, and evidently myopic-character-wise especially. But am I looking for an occult, moving, tear-jerker of a film from director and writer Timo Tjahjanto? Helllllllllllllllllllllllll no. I'm searching for some brain-on-brain-off, let's behold some jaw-dropping, martial-arts-based, militant, warfare battles that embarrassingly generate me to scream out-loud "oh shoot" nearly every eight seconds. That adroit, transcendent, on-screen stunt choreography is what's going to stablizie my eyes glued upon a film parallel to this. Craziness included.

The Night Comes for Us is a senseless, mindless, gore-fested, and lionized action extravaganza. But you know what? I'm okay with that. Especially for A Netflix Original Movie standards "okay with that." (Verdict: B)

The Raid 3 in all but name!
Leofwine_draca20 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I was hugely disappointed when RAID director Gareth Evans revealed that THE RAID 3 was never going to happen, but I'm delighted to report that THE NIGHT COMES FOR US is the next best thing. It's another breakneck Indonesian action flick with a routine plot, good actors, and astonishing and lengthy action sequences. Joe Taslim - the SWAT team leader in THE RAID - plays the hero, a former assassin who leaves his old life but find it coming after him. Iko Uwais is unusually cast as the villain while Julie Estelle - THE RAID 2's Hammer Girl - appears as an assassin. This film boasts a series of incredibly violent martial arts fights that utilise all manner of props and weaponry in a bid to destroy and disable the human body in as many creative ways as possible. The fight choreography is crisp and clear, the actors obviously skilled at what they do, and the pulse-pounding mayhem never lets up; it's hard to pick a favourite fight when there are so many stand-out moments here. What I can say is that the bloodshed is incredibly explicit, making this by far the most gruesome action film I've ever watched. And I can't wait to see it again!

Overdone in some aspects, underdone in others...
destroyerwod1 January 2019
I love martial arts movies and lets just put something clear, i am not against violence or blood/gore. I actually enjoy when movies don't shy away to show the violence and how brutal fights can be. But at some point, too much become almost cartoonish and this is the case with this movie.

Lets discuss the action first as its the main point of the movie. I think some aspects of the fights are very well done, well choreographed and some of the violence is earned righfully. But there is another bigger part of it where you just look at it and think "cmon..." when its over the top for the sake of being over the top. What bothered me the most tough is how EVERY "heroes" of the story seem to be able to tank 6 knife shots or 10 assault rifles bullets and keep on going like its just a flesh wound, but the generic bad guys fall like flies. Oh and of course they are patiently waiting there turn to get slaughtered. Sometimes such scenes make sense like when the fights happen in a corridor or such but sometimes the main guy is in a big open field and everybody just wait patiently there turm, it does not feel organic at all. There is clearly shots when he is vulnerable and yet the bad guys are waiting there turn to make a move.

I am all for suspending my disbelief when watching movies and i am not expecting a UFC fight either where one good punch can KO, but the ammount of punishment some of the characters receive is so insanely over the top that even in a superhero movie you would raise your eyebrow.

As for the plot, i won't tell "too much" as i don't want this review to go into spoiler territory but lets just say that its not well developed. You understand overall why characters do what there doing, but you can't get emotionally invested into it. You don't care because the relations between the characters are never properly developed. Its like a character is introduced and then after 3 minutes of dialogue, a big action scene happen. Some of the characters and plot point seem to be there only to be "explained in the potential sequel" in some way or i don't know.

Again i really don't wanna fall into spoilers so i can't say too much but the plot didn't got me invested in the movie. And i usually don't need a lot to be invested.

As i was watching this movie one taugh came to my mind, the movie felt kinda like the martial art Rated R child of a Zack Snyder and Michael Bay movie. Its like everything is about style but almost nothing is about substance. Where Michael Bay movies are full of explosions and CGI, and Zack Snyder movies are all about visual styles and artistic filming, this movie put every eggs into its fight scenes to make them as "crazy" as possible with the over the top violence, over the top punishment characters can take etc.

Some movies manage to be awesome with very thin storylines, like John Wick. Its establish early on why he does what he does, but the viewer get emotionally invest into the movie cause the characters and motivations are well establish. Every action he takes, you understand why and your rooting for him. But in "The Night comes for Us", i didn't care about any characters because all there motivations where poorly developed exept maybe the main character and still, you understand why he does what he does(mostly), but you wish you knew more about him and what led him to take those choices.

Anyway ill stop it there. I will say that if you want to turn your brain off and love over the top fighting, you may have a good time with this movie. But personally even tough i can suspend my disbelief moderately (like a character receiving a baseball bat shot once to the head and keep fighting) at some point when he get shot mutiple times, slashed multiple times and it seem in a 2 hours time period his injuries are all gone and he fight like he was all fine... yeah well not so much...

Comparing this with Raid or Raid 2 is a an insult to those classics
dhoparu2 November 2018
This can be a one time watch for people who like extremely violent movies with dollops of blood and gore. I enjoyed some of the action scenes but they seem to be choreographed and not raw like the Raid series. This does not come close to those 2 classics and comparing this would be an absolute insult. The movie is very uneven and does not make any sense.

Oh so violent.
BA_Harrison12 November 2018
For those who thought that The Raid 1 & 2 were the last word in kinetic, ultra-brutal martial arts movies, think again: The Night Comes For Us, from director Timo Tjahjanto, is a strong contender for the most excessively violent, blood-drenched action flick ever made. The film's many fight scenes are wonderfully choreographed and flawlessly executed, Tjahanto's breath-taking direction employing shooting techniques that are guaranteed to astound, although it's the sheer quantity of blood and guts that really impresses.

The film stars Joe Taslim as triad member Ito, who seeks redemption for all the terrible things that he has done by saving a young girl, Reina (Asha Kenyeri Bermudez), from his hit squad. Having gunned down his own men and escaped with the girl, Ito finds himself targeted by the triad's top killers, who include Raid star Iko Uwais as his old pal Arian, Julie Estelle (The Raid 2's Hammer Girl) as a motorcycle-riding assassin, and a pair of lesbian hit-women: Elena (Hannah Al Rashid), who is armed with a kukri knife, and Alma (Dian Sastrowardoyo), who wields a whirling wire weapon.

As Ito, aided by his loyal friends Bobby (Zack Lee), Fatih (Abimana Aryasatya) and Wisnu (Dimas Anggara), battles to protect Reina, viewers are treated to all manner of graphic violence: bodies are beaten and mutilated, necks are slashed, and bones are broken. A man is hung on a meathook, someone is machine gunned in the face, and a grenade rips another poor bloke to pieces. There's a shotgun blast to the foot, a knife through the neck, a severed hand, an evisceration, pool balls to the skull, a hook in the crotch, a utility knife in the mouth (and through the cheek), and more bullet hits and stabbings than I can recall. The stuntwork is amazing and it's hard to believe that no-one was seriously injured.

The carnage is so spectacular that it's easy to forgive the simplicity of the plot (the narrative is not nearly as involved as The Raid 2; it's more akin to the original Raid movie in terms of complexity).

2 Hours of Intense action
tmg_kartsa22 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The Night Comes for Us is action Indonesian martial-arts movie in the same vein as Headshot(2016) and the Raid movies. Much like Headshot this movie has quite weak and simple story for 2 hour long movie. Movies action is intense and brutal in "realistic"-way, while there ain't really anything to complain about any of the action-scenes. The movie fails to one-up itself after 1 hour and 30 minutes when It has shown one of the best action-scenes of 21th century in which Operator(Julie Estelle) is fighting two High ranking Triad members. Which leaves viewers hoping for spin-off movie about the operator whose story is't told by this movie except for 2 great action-scenes. Still The night Comes for Us had it's biggest problems in editing of couple of the slower moving scenes. The problems most likely caused by strict time-limits or just blatant laziness, were very noticeable in otherwise such polished film.

Highly dissapointing & most certainly not comparable to The Raid
thedarriushunt24 October 2018
Anyone who compares this to The Raid should watch it again. Let me explain.

Story: Now, everyone recognizes that there is practically no story. But that's different from a legitimately bad story. Take The Raid: Redemption & John Wick for example. Both of them have the bare bones minimum for a story, and that makes it enjoyable & fun to watch. However, the story actually detracts from the enjoyability because of how stupid some of the character decisions made are. The main character should have honestly been killed many times over, but he had some of the best plot armor I've seen in a long time. So when you get to the action scenes, you can't immerse yourself & enjoy it as much because there's the nagging feeling of "this shouldn't even be happening." Which leads into the next & probably worst issue within the movie.

Consistency: There is none. The main character's durability & endurance is however much is necessary. You look at some of the things he gets knocked out, and then all of a sudden he becomes a walking tank at other times. The reason this is such a big issue is once again due to immersion. I can't bring myself to enjoy the fight scene if the whole time I feel that the main character got a magical power up straight from his ass. Both of The Raid m movies, both the John Wick movies, and the Killzone series (underrated but highly recommend for a good action fix) never have that issue. Everything makes sense because it feels like the character could have actually done that, due to proper setup & characterization.

Action: I do have to give praise to the action & choreography, from a technical standpoint. If I'm viewing it without considering the attachment of the stupidity of the narrative, they're done very well. As others have said, it's violent & gritty (for an action movie, most certainly not the most violent movie you'll have seen in 2018 if you enjoy gore & seek it out) which creates an impressive wow-factor. Once again though, I'm unable to appreciate it as much due to how dumb the situation itself is.

Misc Issues: This movie had poor use of background music. The music in most action flicks is very subtle, as it should be. But when it's not there it, as with everything in this movie, detracts from the immersion. The camerawork was good majority of the time but it betrayed itself often. There were points when you could literally see someone standing in the background not doing anything. Compared to the fluidity of both of The Raid movies, it was sad. Enemies almost always came one at a time, & you could feel that.

Pros: The only reason I would say to watch this movie is for the fight scenes with one particular character. The motorcycle woman, as I've dubbed her( she's never named as far as I recall), had the best action scenes by far. Far superior to the main character's, and this is mostly due to the fact that her character was one of the few that were consistent. Everything she was capable of doing was believable because they did proper setup for her. The main character was just so damn inconsistent in his power scaling that you wanted to shoot him yourself.

Anyways, if you read all this I'm impressed. At the end of the day, as always, you should take a look for yourself & see what you think. If you're able to get around all that you might find some joy in the movie. But personally, I would recommend against it strongly.

This is properly stupid
IceCharon8 May 2020
The entire movie from start to end is dumb . However, the fighting scenes are so fake and stupid that there are no words. The bad guys are so incompetent and stupid that a todler can beat single handedly without even breaking a sweat a billion of them.

A movie with great brutal action, but a poor story
tonyred19968 January 2020
The Night Comes For Us is one of the best action of 2018 with action set pieces that are stylized and are well choreographed. This feels like a spiritual sequel to the raid movies, with a similar style of directing and containing three actors who were in the raid. While I don't think this film is as good as raid, what make this movie stand out from the raid is the brutal violence during the fight scenes. For those who want to see blood and gore, this film delivers on that with intense fight scenes and creative weapons that lead to gory satisfying deaths. The film isn't just gore for the sake of sake, it does adds more tension during the fights scenes, as characters would severely injured and even stabbed multiple times and would have to continue fighting, you really do feel the fatigue of the characters. The camerawork and editing are great during the fights, no quick cuts, just nice long takes with clear action. Joe Taslim and Iko Uwais are good in the movie but the standout star has to be Julie Estelle as the operator, she is great and just badass. My favourite fight scene is with her fighting the two-female antagonist (who are also great). Love the music in this scene, the cinematography, pacing, just a great fight scene. What hold this movie back from being great is the story. Joe Taslim who plays Ito, disobeys orders against the triad and fights to protect a little girl. It seems simple, but the film over complicates it and focuses so much time in the first act setting this up. There are excesses scenes of characters arguing about the past to the point where it's just boring exposition and doesn't add to the movie. Those scenes just feel overly dramatic and the tone is way too serious. Most people aren't going to watch this movie for the story, I just wish the film spent a little less time on those scenes in the beginning. Once the action kicks in, it's a nonstop thrill ride, but those scenes makes re watching harder. Overall a movie with great action and camerawork, but a film that would have benefited with a less overly complicated plot and better pacing in the first act.

A good action movie with some twists. But the most impressive is the fight scenes: so real, so brutal and too bloody. You will really pay attention to the violence and love the knifes.

One of the best action film after The Raid Redemption. Brutal, gruesome, gritty, relentless action extravaganza.
Fella_shibby29 October 2018
What an amazing action/horror film it is man. Yes, u heard it rite. U can call it a horror film too. The amount of non stop kills, stabbings, brutal n insane violent scenes, the non stop splatter is far more than in any recent horror films. Coming back to the action, the choreography of the fight scenes is top notch. It is a non stop action extravaganza for fans of the genre. There r too many brutal action scenes. The pool ball scene with the scalp attached to it may upset some viewers. With Iko Uwais as the villain, Joe Taslim as the man seeking redemption, Julie Estelle as the badass femme fatale n Zack Lee as the strong n daring junkie, then u probably get a solid action film. Hats off to Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre, segments from Vhs 2 n ABC's of death, Killers n Headshot). Kill Bill, John Wick, Rambo n Expendables looks like kindergarten in front of this film.

The most fun you will ever have watching a movie
tomnuke27 October 2018
This movie is dumb. But this movie is also brilliant. This movie is fun, but also disturbing. Imagine if The Raid, and Mad Max Fury Road had a baby. This movie would be the baby. As you could tell this movie is a rollercoaster. This movie is very self aware of how stupid it is. So it uses it it's advantage. They go all the way with each action scene. Also each action scene is amazing. Not on a fun level but on a technical level. It is quite an achievement.

They are still able to add moments of genuine emotion in this fun rollercoaster. The acting is very over the top and it's great. But the actors know when to tone it down for scenes which somehow works. This movie is a mixed bag, but it just works. It is so entertaining.

But many will probably be turned off by how mixed it is, so just watch for fun.

It isn't an artistic masterpiece. But boy is it fun.

One of the finest
kamau-1526722 October 2018
This will easily go down to the best Martial arts movie I've seen in the last 5 years or so. Iko Uwais and Co. did there parts perfectly. Am very thrilled of the ideal of brilliants of the choreography *madness* This was truly a gem not only the action sequences spectacular, and I iterate spectacular but the story line and acting as well as screenplay was very tastefully done.

This film should, by all rights, reset the bar for the standards of Martial arts films from now on. It was simply an outstanding film in every way I think a lot of people will like it.

Overkill
rudygerst28 July 2020
The Raid was really good, but the Indonesian movies are getting over the top since this.

The fights are great but they suffer the John Wick problems :

  • Multiple ennemies will systematically attack one by one. This is sometimes ridiculous, watching the guys in the background waiting for their turn, not knowing what to do
  • Henchmen will be defeated in a single hit, but more important baddies will tank an insane amount of punches.
  • Main characters can tank pretty much anything, fight with broken bones and a 150-liter blood loss.

Overall, the movie was ok, but relies too much on gory violence. This is too much.

Great gore, painful story/story telling, so and so martial arts
AndreasHardcastle20 October 2018
My first thought when I saw this one released: New Iko Uwais movie? Must see!

And boy did I get more and more disappointed the longer the movie went on. "The Raid" was a good example of really good mass fight choreography where 20 vs. 1 didn't mean 19 people waiting and it actually being twenty 1 on 1 fights. This movie is the PERFECT example of twenty opponents awaiting their turn to get slaughtered. There is not a lot of finesse, this movie is all about gore and maximum brutallity, leaving the "good" guys shredded to pieces and continue fighting in an absolutely unbeliebavble state of injury.

If you are able to COMPLETELY suspend ANY disbelief, your totally fine with oponents in fight scenes doing the pause after one move until the good guy destroys them routine, mass fights with bad guys attack one after another, and don't need any kind of story when it's a good gorefest, then this is for you.

That said... Purely as a gorefest it is fantastic! Blood and guts everywhere, bodyparts are getting cut off, places get totally trashed, tons of broken bones in almost every scene, more cuts and slices than in any butcher shop - oh wait, except for the butcher shop scene in this one :) - and did I mention BLOOD, BLOOD, BLOOD? For the artistic and imaginative gorefest it is, I gave it 5 stars

Alas I expected more of a martial arts movie featuring Iko Uwais having seen his other movies with way better and more believable choreography, so this was a huge disappointment for me. And for my taste they were trying so very much too hard to make this look and feel like one of the classic heroic bloodshed movies John Woo did in his earlier career, going waaay over the top with it, there were moments I felt a bit digusted at that.

Bottom line: Great for gorelovers, painful if suspension of disbelief doesn't come easy for you, so and so for martial arts fans.

An insane bloodbath.
ryansalamence20 October 2018
I've been needing a good insane action movie fix for a while now, and this was definitely it. Once this movie ramps up, it never comes back down. Nonstop incredible action all the way through. This film is amazing at using its surroundings to its advantage. A fight scene in a butchers room? Every cleaver, slab of meat, meat hook, and bone becomes a weapon. Fight next to a pool table? Pool balls and pool sticks used in the most brutal way possible. The fight choreography is phenomenal and I was almost convinced they were just beating the piss out of the actors. This movie is such a brutal and fun time, a great movie to watch with a room full of energetic friends.

Violent, gory, and brutal but the story is mediocre.

Very violent and very gory but the simple plot and shallow characters don't make for much of a deep and engaging experience. The action doesn't let up for long once it starts and the fight scenes are pretty brutal, but some lack smoothness in their flow and the special effects (apart from the gore) lack the flair of other films. It's entertaining and it has its stylish moments, but a stronger and better delivered story would have helped.

So the scenario... meh nothing interesting... A world-class killer becomes friendly, is chased down by his former colleagues, fights an old friend... saves a little girl... Seen this before. Barely any character development; the characters are a mixture of the Raid with Kill Bill. The acting's average. All the budget went for the thousands of fake blood and CGI that they used. Fights were too long, too bloody, too unreal, like literally 90% of the movie is blood, sweat, and more blood.

Pass.
