Absolute PERFECTION
royalewithcheese202021 February 2017
Is there a higher rating than 10? Not really sure what else to say, except this is probably the best hour of television I have seen since "Ozymandias" of "Breaking Bad". "This Is Us" has to be one of the best, if not the best, shows on television right now. And I'm not comparing this to "Breaking Bad" in any way as the shows are totally different, but I haven't been this satisfied with an hour of television since that episode of "Breaking Bad". Pretty much recommended for just about anyone as it goes deep into some of the deepest emotions life has to offer. In some ways it reminded me of "The Lion King" and "The Circle of Life", which is also a pure masterpiece of a movie, in my opinion. You'll understand when you watch this episode just what I am talking about. I would highly recommend watching the episodes leading up to this one to get to know the characters, but I would not say it is absolutely 100% necessary as long as you know the basic premise of the show. I say this because this is without a doubt the best episode of the series up to this point. If you just want to watch a power-house packed episode of emotions and gain a new perspective on life, watch this episode. Gather around with your family, grab some tissues, and enjoy.

An excellent episode
avagaysmith23 February 2017
In general, 'This is Us' is brilliant. The way the stories are woven with the present and the past generally has me awed, glued, connected. This though...this episode moved me deep in my spirit. I bawled! Ugly, hurt but accepting tears. That's not even the right expression but I am just so overcome with emotion. So poignant. There are not a lot of episodes and shows like this on television. Simply exquisite.

Utterly Speechless

Wow. Just... wow. 43 minutes of sheer perfection. One of the most powerful episodes of television I've ever seen, and I've seen my fair share. The acting, the music, the flashbacks, the ending. It's all so, so beautiful, yet so terribly gut-wrenching. I felt numb during the last 5- 10 minutes, overcome with emotion. Tears were streaming down my cheeks when the credits rolled, and my wife couldn't help but laugh. But I didn't care. This episode touched my soul, it's still on my mind nearly 6 hours later. I'll probably lose some sleep over it honestly, but oh well. It was worth it.

Just WOW

If this episode does not get to you, you have no soul. This show is the complete package that everything else on TV, cable, and any other outlet as to look at and and be very, very jealous of. Ron gives an acting lesson on every episode, and on this one, I am truly sad to see him go. I hope they have flashbacks and remembrances of him on future episodes.

Best Television Episode EVER
aristapowers0423 February 2017
Wow. There aren't words to describe how touching, moving, and emotional this episode was. This episode affected me so much and I'm still at times crying 48 hours later. This show resonates with people because it deals with the realities of life. This episode was beautiful from beginning to end, and like others have said the last 10 minutes was heartbreaking. And as sad is it was, it was also amazing because I was reminded of how precious life is as cheesy as that might sound. I was reminded that at the end of the day, nothing matters except the people you love in your life. I would be shocked if this specific episode doesn't win numerous awards because it was that great. I've never left a review on IMDb but I am now because I believe people NEED this show. People NEED to see this episode. Never had a scripted television show affect my life until This is Us and I appreciate every single person involved with the production of this show. I do suggest watching this episode on a night where you don't have to go to work the next day! It's that moving :)

Masterpiece

"This is Us" is an incredibly good show; touching, beautiful, smart, artistic, well-told, well-acted, well-produced... But this episode! I can't find the correct words for it. It's all-out perfection. Imagine one very powerful emotion (that consists of all your emotions) wrapped up inside you, and suddenly it explodes and all your emotions flow out. That's the closest I can describe this episode.

Story? Amazing. Conversations? Not a single word wasted. Acting? World-class. Cuts between scenes? So correctly adjusted that your emotions will no way of staying inside anymore. Camera angles, lighting, perspective; all as perfect as humanly possible. And finally; music? Read carefully: They freaking wrote masterpiece of a blues song for this episode. This is how incredible this episode is. THEY WROTE A MASTERPIECE SONG FOR A TV SHOW EPISODE!

After seeing this, I don't know if I'll ever be satisfied with TV again.

Warning: Spoilers
Still crying, I feel like I've lost a family member. William made me smile, laugh and snot all over my laptop as I write this review. I want to go back to episode one and watch his journey all over again, just because I don't think it will feel the same without him. Can we all give a huge hand to Ron Cephas Jones please? Roll all the windows down and crank up the music people, we're not here forever.

It hits me. touched
gcy-0147022 February 2017
I'm from China, but I'm still touched by this episode. Except for the first episode , it is the most episode that can be named after "best".even I think it could be produced as movie . And also, I'm so interested in the music inside. Does someone could tell which type of music they used? like the music wrote by William and sang by his cousin. Thanks a lot

Touching
jeppmet19 March 2017
My wife and I cry in pretty much every episode so It took us about 3 weeks waiting for a moment when we could appreciate/handle this episode. We made it like a minute or so before the waterworks and didn't stop till well after this magnificent episode. Writing, music, acting, pacing, everything works together in a powerful way...this show has reached an emotional depth very few shows can achieve and nailed it in every aspect. This is Us couldn't be a more appropriate named, this series is the human spirit!

What an amazing episode, full of emotions that I believe we all have for ourselves and our close ones. Best episode so far, and after watching tons of shows, this is the one that brings out raw emotions, and that is irreplaceable. Just keep on doing the great job of being honest about real life!

Memphis (#1.16)

Definitely a great episode. Very powerful. Especially the ending. The dying moments of William were so well done. Their whole trip and Randall getting to know his father's past was special in every moment. Everything that was said made one understand William better. And the acting was absolutely perfect.

Best episode yet
dalemo-258946 April 2018
As someone else mentioned, this is the best hour of television I've seen since the "Breaking Bad" episode "Ozymandias." It's flawless. It's overwhelmingly emotional. And like the whole show, it's so real. Especially as someone who grew up in Memphis, including going to A. Schwab on Beale St., this episode was just amazing. If I could give it any more than 10 stars I would.

MEMPHIS SET THE FNG BAR
kathleenmccabe21 June 2021
For 6 years now, I've purposely kept viewing services out of my home, checking dvds out of library instead. I randomly checked TIU season 1 out, knowing only the little blurb on the case.

This show. This show. This show.

I am mesmerized and hooked. It takes A LOT for that to happen.

The writing....the writing. To sit in the writers room and watch this magic be created would be a huge tick on my life bucket list.

The characters, the actors' portrayal of them and the actors themselves.

The time weaving, usually annoying or poorly done, is beyond flawless.

The scene sets and filming/scene capturing.

The sound track is worthy on its own.

Watching this show is a creative explosion for me.

Just when I didn't think it could get better, Memphis blew the doors off. Jesus. I don't know what else I can say.

Unfairly rated
diegonciopilato10 April 2021
Some connect more with Jack, others with William, but objectively, this episode deserved a much higher note, the concept of a last trip across the country, the flashbacks, the musical numbers, the original songs and obviously the ducks.

What a ride
cicerogeorge26 August 2020
This episode has it all. Joyful and sad, comic and dramatic, it's all over the place in the best way. It touches you, it plays with you, it takes you along the ride all the way. William is a lesson on how to build up a character, we feel like we could hug him. The actors are absolutely impeccable, every single eye movement is perfect, the expressions without the lines say a thousand words. It takes "show, don't tell" to the very core. Very well written with borderline perfect performances. 10/10

This is one of the best episodes of the entire show. If for the great song on its own and the way the performance is crafted.

Watch the whole thing. You cannot disagree.

It is lovely. William is a fantastic character. I sure everyone have differing feelings about this tv series, but the story about Randall and William is unique, and they give us a piece of advice in many ways. This chapter is the best in the first season.

Right In The Feels

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the most emotional episodes of television I have ever seen. The build up to Williams death, with the Memphis trip, is a great way to tie you into Williams character before letting him go. The way his death scene is done is very well done and emotionally grabbing. I watched this with two other people, both of whom were crying.
