Genuine Review By A Real Person
freqeteq27 October 2020
The film felt a lot longer than its 90 minute runtime, and not in a good way. The acting was ok by most of the cast, there were a couple of pretty terrible performances though, but the problem for me was that in this drama none of the characters felt like real people, and I put that down not to the acting but to the writing and directing. I suggest you watch the trailer, and if you do watch it you'll see lots of shots that look like they could be straight out of a commercial for a clothing brand or something with people being filmed in slow motion while posing, this is what a lot of the film is like and it didn't work for me at all. There's almost a surreal dreamlike feel to the look of the film that detracts from the story it's trying to tell, and at the end of the day the story they're telling is a very simple one, but when none of the characters or the situations they're in feel real it makes it very hard to care about anything that's happening to them.

I would not recommend this film as one worth watching and I would not watch another film directed by this directing duo.

a devil, a nun, and a princess ...
ferguson-628 October 2020
Greetings again from the darkness. In the not so distant past, folks who lived in small towns felt like there were no secrets - everyone in town knew each other and what they were up to. Thus, the proverbial "fishbowl" of the title. Of course, these days, people in towns and cities of all sizes voluntarily advertise their every waking moment on social media, making privacy and gossip relics of a bygone era. Brother-sister co-directors Alexa Kinigopoulos and Stephen Kinigopoulos (first feature for both), working with a script by writers Piero S Iberti, Maria Stratakis, and (co-director) Stephen Kinigopoulos serve up a taste of small town life in the good 'ol days.

"In Bishop, you either talk or you're talked about." So says our narrator Belle over the slow-motion opening montage. She's the oldest of three sisters who live with their father and attend a local Catholic school. All members of this family are broken in their own way, and it's made clear this is due to the beloved mother/wife no longer being around (though initially we aren't sure what happened). Belle (newcomer Belle Shickle) is the rebellious one, though not quite as self-assured as she likes to think. The middle girl, Rachel (Emily Peachey), is sensitive and stunned when her friend tells her they can't hang out anymore - even for her birthday. The youngest, Jessa (newcomer Caroline Coleman) hasn't spoken a word in the 4 months (actually 118 days) since mom has been gone. Their dad (longtime stuntman-actor Rick Kain) is a mess, bouncing from over-zealous religious fanatic to forsaking it altogether, and then back again.

We see the family faced with hostile reactions in the community, at school, and even at church, where the priest suggests it would be better for everyone if they stayed away. Dad is drawn in by Tele-Evangelist Ron Peltz (Bobby J Brown) who is hocking his $1000 "Save Me Now" program as protection from The Rapture, which he proclaims will arrive on September 29. Close to foreclosure on their house, the dad plops down the grand, and forces his daughters to go door-to-door trying to "save" the neighbors from the end of the world.

A countdown to the final days also includes the teenage sisters trying to find their way in this new world. We get flashbacks to when they were younger and family life with mom (Judith Hoag, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES) was pleasant, despite dad's alcoholism at the time. The three sisters cling to each other, but grow more concerned for their father and themselves. A particularly telling sequence has them defying their father and attending a costume party dressed as a devil, a nun, and a princess. It doesn't end well, and sets up the finale.

The Kinigopoulos filmmakers give the movie a dreamy/surreal look and feel, and perhaps Jeff Nichols' far superior 2011 TAKE SHELTER is the closest comparison. The four lead actors are fine (especially Ms. Shickle), but the background actors are exaggerated and distracting - perhaps this is done on purpose to help us understand what the family is going through. Pretty significant observations are offered up on small towns, parenting, church-goers, faith as a crutch, and alcoholism. It's not an easy watch, and one that will probably not have mass appeal. It's the type of movie that fits easily into the line-up of many film festivals, as that's the environment where it is most likely to find appreciation. Available VOD October 27, 2020

Another honest review, from a real person
YayNayorMeh13 December 2020
It's clear to see what the Kinigopoulos siblings were aiming for. Take the aesthetic of 'The Virgin Suicides', the film-making style of 'The Tree Of Life' & the plot of 'Take Shelter' and simmer for 80 minutes.

They didn't pull it off.

The film has a point, albeit a rather banal one, but it is buried so deep under mounds of unneccesary style that it doesn't come through. What could be an interesting backdrop to this tale of faith gone wrong is so catastrophically underplayed that the final revelations mean nothing.

I'm intrigued enough by this directing team that I will be looking out for what comes next, but this film probably isn't worth it.

Terrible movie
On_The_Mark27 October 2020
Really poorly directed and written, here we have another "movie" that has "reviews" by someone who was involved in the production. Look at the other "reviews." 2 sentences, written exactly the same.

"Awesome!"

So we're to believe someone watched this amateur production and thought it was as good as the Godfather and gave it a 10?

It's not. It's terrible. When you see the amazing 2 sentence reviews for a movie, and they're all written the same, it's shill reviews that aren't real.

Take it from someone real.

This movie sucked.

Girls that wanna have fun
Stanlee1073 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is kind of a surreal watch. A greiving father has to raise 3 growing teenage girls. He has turned to religion but to the most extreme/ rapture level. However, these 3 teenagers are being rebellious & going against their father's wishes.

The foreboding feeling is present throughout this film. The mystery of the mother's death is part of the big reveal at the end.

Disjointed Plot and Resolution
kurtisjvandermolen30 January 2023
I agree that this is a combination of Virgin Suicides and Take Shelter themes but with much less plausibility and sympathy. The mother's pep was Pollyanna and overwrought in its flashbacks. The father's knee jerk or developed bitterness and distrust toward his girls was mercurial. His vulnerability was translated gullibility, but then culpability when abdicated to his young captives. The religious themes were transparent and relatable, but the demands undertaken, cultic and draconian. A person like this finishes the job, but this script hijacks the character of the protagonist, and then crash lands into an entirely different movies' ending. If this is a film to be appreciated for the raw intensity of suffering, it makes the viewer wonder why the police or the priest didn't take a harder look into this fishbowl, or why the writer either meandered to the inevitable close, or lost sight of this story's plot trajectory. This movie was a misfire, albeit with great potential for explosive and dramatically more meaningful possibilities.

Temptation of egg
Kicked the can and triggered memories of my own catholic school daze in a rush and a flush. Back in the days when the only play at recess was: go out long. I remember loving the girl's uniforms; especially the ones for gym class. The way I'd always feel hormonally pensive during morning mass. How Jesus' wounds looked so feminine up there on that splintery cross. The stained glass for a stained class scarlet-lettered by original sin. So glad I deprogrammed myself soon after graduation. I digress.

Considering that the majority of this film's cast was in fact composed mostly of newcomers, I think they pulled it off. No, it's not as glossy or lachrymose as the Virgin Suicides, or as cracked out wacky as Take Shelter, two I'd compare it to, if only on a thematic and atmospheric level. Yes, there are a handful of half-daft moments (mostly offered up by the ancillary and tertiary characters, overuse of trans-fat yellow hues and some very poor framing) but these are overshadowed by solid, emotive performances by the father and three sisters. Belle, in particular, is incandescent and has the kind of on screen presence that makes you take pause. Hell's Belle in that Devil's costume would make even Dante blush. She's her own inferno. Dug the way the family's dull home is sort of the objective correlative of a Christian psalm about the meek inheriting the Earth. Deeply dug the rapture imagery, the father's hypocritical self-deceit manifested in recurring battles with bottles, the dueling themes of escape, and the well-timed/executed tragic flashback scenes, too. The televangelist Peltz was spot on realistic with the old compensate for my lack of sincerity with avarice-fueled charisma. He had the swagger of a young Jimmy Swaggart. I also loved the haunting soundtrack/score. The spectral vocals reminded me a little bit of the creepy nuns singing some of the darker hymns from back in the day (Under the Weight of the Wood comes to mind). The at times dirge-like music complimented the languid pacing of the film, not unlike the watery church wine used to do for that dry paper wafer during communion. Amen!

Mixed feelings b/c first half was meh; spoilers here
rtscannell18 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Initially I was reminded of the virgin suicides but as it kinda plodded along, was less impressed. Filmmakers tried hard to make it ethereal... The last 15 minutes were probably the best in that the story finally fell together. I was disappointed that pops didn't lose it & smack the evangelist upside the head w/the shovel ... & liked that the girls finally got smart & headed "west" for new starts ...

Highly underrated, but his story is the story of many
Digital_excitation1 December 2020
A seemingly very religious man with three daughters, living in a small christian village struggles with life after his wife's death and the repossession of his house by the bank. The community hates him for his past, his church wants him gone. His youngest daughter struggles with mean remarks at school. His daughters are obviously less religious than he is, and cope with their mom's death in other ways. After vivid ominous dreams, he turns to scripture in desperation, seeking redemption and forgiveness in every way possible, eventually falling into the hands of a TV-preacher that foretells the end of the world but actually scams him out of his last money with a box of flyers, buttons and a VHS-tape full of empty words. His daughters have no other option then to follow in his last desperate attempt to reunite them with his wife, their mother.

As the movie progresses, it becomes clear why nobody likes him anymore. Little hints are given and the dreadful event that took the life of his wife, who seemed to be loved and liked by everyone. Even though the movie is fictional, the problems that the man has are the problems of many. Too many... and in this case, the worst possible happens and there is no turning back nor apologizing. In the end, you also realize that he will not nor ever can change.

Top notch drama, very well told, very well filmed and very recognizable theme.

Family Tragedy Beautifully Filmed
abark-5835928 October 2020
This is a beautifully filmed movie about a family tragedy unfolding in a small judgmental town (hence the title). Although tragic, the three sisters remained loyal and supportive of one another and surprisingly to a father with an irrational paranoid parenting style. As other reviewers mentioned, the dialog is sparse, but the creative evocative imagery moves along the dual story lines of a missing mother mystery and preparing for the end of the world.

We thoroughly enjoyed this movie recommend you take a watch.

I really don't get the negative reviews
salviolog11 November 2020
It's a really engaging drama about a family falling apart because of the mother's death. 3 girls who attend a Catholic school have to deal with their father's depressed mental state, worsened by his growing religious obsession with a televangelist cult which he joins as a last ditch attempt at fixing things. The feeling of everything falling apart is prevailing throughout the entire movie. I didn't quite get the ending, it was all built on implications, but it was clear enough to make assumptions. I felt engaged in what's happening to the characters and felt their emotions. It's a nice, if only pretty depressing, movie.

Impressive, Haunting Indie
brontebrowning11 November 2020
This is one of the best films I've seen all year, and I view at least one movie daily.

To think how little was spent making "Fishbowl" is a reminder it really does come down to the writing. Yes, direction and acting are vital to be sure. Nonetheless, a story has to have good bones to soar above the rest.

This little movie really delivers! Yes, it's flawed. Yes, it could have been edited with a bit more finesse, and tightened a tad for time. Yes, some of the supporting actors were weak (although every major player was top-notch).

But this is an unforgettable story, well told.

The plot's already been explained, so I won't reiterate here. Just put it on, sit back and let it take you on its journey.

RECOMMENDED.

Super Interesting; Lots to Discuss about Themes and Presentation
rannynm5 November 2020
I found Fishbowl super interesting. There's a lot to discuss about the themes and presentation.

The story follows three sisters, Belle, Rachel and Jessa, as they struggle to cope with recent trauma in a small town. Meanwhile, their father grows more paranoid over the end of the world.

It's important to mention that this film is heavily about religion. What sparks the father's paranoia is a televangelist claiming he can save people from Judgment Day. As a result, the father becomes obsessive and borderline abusive. I really like how this film comments on religious figures taking advantage of those who are struggling. It's a topic I don't see discussed that often, and I think it's well handled here. Because on the one hand, you feel bad for their father, Rick, as he's dealing with trauma just like his daughters. However as the film goes on, he begins to spiral out of control, and becomes more and more unlikeable. Despite that, you understand his downward spiral isn't entirely his fault. It's an intriguing character arc, and a great way of showing how religion changes people. Humans are fragile and flawed and need direction, but which way should they go?

I also really like the acting in this film. The daughters give incredibly emotional and compelling performances, but I want to give special mention to Caroline Coleman, aka Jessa. She has no lines of dialogue, but her acting is really emotional and I really felt her pain. This is her first film and I sense a great future ahead.

However, while I think this aspect of the film is handled well, there are many scenes that don't really seem to have a purpose other than to make you uncomfortable. I don't inherently have a problem with a movie trying to make me feel uncomfortable, if there is a reason for it. But, I couldn't really figure out what the reasons were for those scenes. So take this as a warning that some scenes might be upsetting.

The presentation of this film is pretty great. I like the dull, somber tone of the movie, and the lack of music. This movie also utilizes a lot of flashbacks as a way to get a better understanding of the sisters' mother. I like how the events that led to this story aren't entirely clear, and they let you figure out what's happening through context clues and parallels. I think it makes the character arcs, along with the ending, much more impactful.

I rate Fishbowl 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 14 to 18, as this film can be quite dark. It is available now on Amazon and other VOD platforms, so look for it. Reviewed by Calista B., KIDS FIRST

Visually Stunning

I really loved how so much of the story is told through visuals instead of unnecessary dialogue. Incredibly detailed and stylized. I feel like I need to re-watch to pick up clues and see how the themes were hinted at throughout.

My daughter and I really enjoy movies that we can talk about after watching together and this movie had us talking about it most of the way home. We loved it! I don't want to give any spoilers but we would love a sequel please! The ending was awesome! We would just like to see where the sisters journey takes them next..........

I'm always looking for a great indie film to balance all of the traditional Hollywood blockbusters and Fishbowl didn't disappoint. The film was incredibly shot and gripping until the end! A must see!

A real persons review !
patti-5619122 December 2020
The "fishbowl" hit very close to home for me ! I was raised in a very religious household. I have also lived in a small town were everyone knows everyone. Based on my experience I found that the film definitely got it right, how twisted religion can make people, and how the judgments of a small town can turn on someone. I personally have dealt with my past. Also like the main characters I in essence just drove away !! I loved the comic relief scene of the girls going door to door !!! All in all I really enjoyed the movie !!

For Fans of The Virgin Suicides & Higher Ground
twelve-house-books12 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
When I was about sixteen my younger sister and I got off the school bus in the afternoon and when we walked home from the stop we couldn't find our parents. We immediately looked at each other and fearfully whispered "The Rapture!" No lie. We believed Jesus had come and taken our parents but that we were somehow not worthy to go. (My sister still believes this over forty years later--I rejected it by the time I was nineteen and today realize that the event occurred during the Great Tribulation when Nero was Caesar of Rome.) Anyway, I watch 360+ films a year, and never before today have I lain down for an afternoon nap after watching one and dreamed additional scenes--plausible situations that fit well with those inside the actual film. This gem is 'The Virgin Suicides' meets 'First Reformed' meets 'Higher Ground', but then again, it is really none of those films but stands well on its own with no comparisons (except for beautiful blonde daughters as with TVS). In a weird twist, the victims of the televangelist portrayed in this film are Catholics and not your run-of-the-mill Pentecostals or Baptists who are normally taken with such ideas. (I have known Roman Catholics to divert from church teaching and accept Darbyism, also called the Rapture Doctrine, so the scenario is plausible). Overall this is a depressing film with little to no humor, but the entire cast drives it forward breathtakingly, from the teenage punk boyfriend in his big bubba truck to the three sweet sisters to the guilt-ridden father to the gentle-spirited priest to the self-righteous church congregation and rural neighbors of the suffering family.

A great weird movie
seligpen24 March 2024
I honestly really loved this movie it is pretty slow but the story line is really interesting and definitely kept me thinking for a while. I've never came a cross a movie quite like this one, the sisters had a sorta virgin suicides vibe but it's wasn't a copy. I really enjoyed how the dad was written it was very eerie but well done. This movie did have a way different ending then I expected but I was surprised in a good way. I wish it had more of a soundtrack though but I will be recommending this movie too people who like the virgin suicides. It was very stylized in the vintage amaricana religious way and I think the costumes very much showed that. Overall a great movie.
