Soft porn and time travel
Top_Dawg_Critic30 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So now we have time travel - to go ask Rollo for help, and come back with an army - within a day? Don't think today's airlines are even that fast lol. And all this soft porn cheating back and forth is getting very annoying and boring smh. Trying too much to be like GOT.

A Non-Engaging Episode
claudio_carvalho21 January 2018
After being defeated by Lagherta´s army, Ivar and Hvitserk ask for help to Rollo that sends an army to help them. Bjorn visits his brothers expecting to make a deal but Ivar rejects to discuss. Bishop Heahmund has an encounter with Lagherta and offers to fight with her army. Meanwhile Floki faces problems with the settlers.

"A Simple Story" is a non-engaging episode of "Viking". Floki´s segment is pointless and Rollo´s participation sending an army to help Hvitserk and Ivar instead of Bjorn is senseless. My vote is seven.

The "calm" before the storm *Huge spoilers, read at your own discretion*
martymasta18 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The battle does not continue and that is to be expected, they need to regroup and prepare. There is ALOT going on, Ivar and Harald gain support from the Franks now and the final battle will hopefully be epic! Floke and Kjetil must deal with Eivind, but Floke does not want to turn to violence, after the ending scene however.... anything can happen! The most shocking thing in this episode was Aethelwulf's death, some view it as bad writing, but being stung by a bee is deadly if you are allergic, even today! It was very unexpected, but you could tell that Aethelwulf knew right away what was gonna happen after he got stung. Not all deaths have to be meaningful, it adds realism to the series. I cannot wait for the final episode of Season 5A and to see Ivar and Bishop Heahmund going up against eachother. Truly, this battle can go either way! Alfred is also king now, so season 5B will be spectacular.

Miscourage

My review for this episode is good, but there is one think that i didn't like

When the brother of Alfred propose him for a king and when they say "I" and next thing the music and Bishop Heahmund between those event the transition i don't approve it, because for me it's not on point and that is why my vote is seven because the transition. If the transition was well made i would give thise episode 9/10! That is my opinoin, sorry for that, but that is my decision.

Taking Real Liberties now
paulbennell18 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Whilst I know this is a drama loosely based on english and norse history and most of the story of Ragnar and his sons is lost in legend, the history of Wessex is based in fact. It is fact that Alfred only ascended to the throne after the death of his brother Aethelred (in fact 3 brothers preceded him!). So I can't believe how the writers of this can take such a liberty as to wipe out the existence of King Aethelred the first! Yes some things have to change to fit the drama but come on, losing a king is a step too far. At least "The Last Kingdom" got it right!😁

Nonsense plot points
srw-2912913 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Having binge watched this, this is the first episode that really irked me as not making much sense. There have been a few moments like that through the series so far, but in this episode, they were glaring.

Why would Francia send an army to help one side in a war between Vikings? Why would Rollo send soldiers to fight Bjorn and Lagertha - for whom he presumably still cares - just to help crown Ivar, a nephew who he has never spoken with? (Rollo left when Ivar was a baby). Why would he get involved? Would the emperor consent to him sending Frankish soldiers to help a leader, Ivar, who is currently a occupying part of a neighbouring Christian kingdom?

Also confusing: Judith's insistence - to the very foreseeable outcome of alienating her son - that Aethelred decline the crown in favour of her favourite son, Alfred. What a strange stand for a mother to take against her child.

I know that the show is only loosely based in history so I'm not complaining about the outcomes of the narrative, but the steps taken to reach them and the decisions characters make need to be rationalised.

The pacing is also absurd. In the time it takes Harald's army to return to Midgard and then Hvitserk to sail to Normandy and back again, Lagertha's army are still sitting in their war camp; literally nobody has moved or returned to Kattegat after their victory.

The Iceland story with Floki is about the only thing in this episode that isn't bewildering.

What to say...
mbocquet-0406119 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Well, I prefer this episode to the previous one actually, but all storylines felt rush and don't make that much sense, well the only one that is good is about england, finally something interesting again, and that alfred, the character and the actor could be great! Rollo deciding to help the sons of ragnar, well, whithout explanation let's say it's pointless. Heahmund, well, pointless, or maybe the fact is that he could bring england to fight alongside lagertha? and then vikings would have been the bridge to confrontation between French and English later on... we'll see. Floki, it is interesting, but... Vikings became a serie about History that developps along episodes, explaining many things that happened and why, okay.. but it feels like michael hirst is lost, i'm sure he's got a plan in the end, but he seems to be struggling the developpement in between. This series shows the story of vikings, but it feels less and less interesting, due to the characters development that is going everywhere and nowhere in the meantime, but without thrilling

Last week - 10 stars, great battle and dynamics. This weak - 1 star, soap opera, Rollo copout, defunk last week's victory
Bababooe19 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The only reason to watch this is for the comedy of how Aethelwulf dies. His puffy face, and the dialogue can't be taken seriously. This actor is ok, not great, he followed direction.

Hvitserk has a great idea. He'll ask Rollo for help. So, we sit and wait for the great Roll. 2 minutes later Hvitserk is back, not with Rollo but with Rollo's soldiers. This alone makes this episode a 1 star. What kind of crap is that? And why would Rollo help Ivar, and not Bjorn and Lagertha? This is a joke. So basically, the victory that Bjorn won last week is for nothing.

Floki story. It was good that the idiot got killed. We need to see Floki messing some people up. Enough with the flower people.

Heahmund? This guy is a whore for battle.

The production is great. But these actors cannot handle drama. I hate soap opera, but sometimes we need some drama. Let's get back to some battles.

What happened to this series?
machina2225 June 2022
'Why did you save my life?' 'I don't know'

That about sums up the quality of the writing this season. It's taken a huge nosedive.

Here are just some of the many problems with it:

  • Things happen because the plot demands it even if it makes no sense.

  • Every character (minor and major) so far this season has plot armour.

  • People make decisions completely out of character all the time.

  • Everyone has access to fast travel like they're in a video game.

  • Alliances are made & fall apart seemingly at random, yet no one ever questions the reliability of their new allies.

  • To top it all off Floki's quirky and likeable personality has been completely destroyed.

The wife of Etheloff, how a character can make you quit a show
meeedoooz9 January 2019
Never have i seen and episode so badly written with an idiotic plot like this one. But man the abomination that is Etheloff's wife truely is the last straw. This character made me quit the show. There is no more reason to anything that happens. Just soap opera.
