A side splitter.
Sleepin_Dragon17 August 2019
This episode has the lot, a great story, wonderful cast, and a script that is so funny, parts of it could have been lifted from Are you being served.

I loved the backdrop of the radio show, and John Henshaw was terrific as the temperamental radio host. The cast were a delight, some big sitcom names alongside He Shaw, namely Officer Crabtree, and Nurse Gladys Emanuelle, Arthur Bostrom was fabulous as the camp wannabe writer.

The crimes were clever, and the outcome wasn't the one I expected, but that part was almost secondary, the humour, sometimes overdone was truly side splitting. The house smelled of pussy, you can picture Mrs Slocombe delivering that to a rapturous applause.

A favourite. 9/10

It's up to you!

When radio quiz Up to You comes to Kembleford, Father Brown suspects that one of the cast is responsible for their landlady's murder.

Quite a quaint and nostalgic story with a radio quiz show, and of course the radio performers can be right flawed. It's a pleasant viewing with a good mystery and unexpected murderer.

Nostalgic humor and a grumpy guest house lady

One of the more enjoyable episodes. Mrs. Rudge as the guest house owner who rifles through her guests private things when they are out, former circuit performer Barney, and the flambouyent Richie who is probably terrible trouble to go out drinking with.

Everyone wants to be a contestant on the touring game show and while Bunty plays the rich sidekick who comes off as clueless, yet again it shows he has the smarts and there is more to her than good looks.

Great to see the small town getting excitement from the BBC coming their way and a bit of love thrown in at the end. Wonderful episode with some old fashioned humor.

Warning: Spoilers
Arthur Bostrom guest stars as Richie Queenan, and the surname is a play on words with Richie's fancy personality and disposition if you know what I mean. Up to You is the radio quiz show that comes to Kembleford, and it's a lot of fun with references to the BBC and reaching out to the rural audiences and so on. I didn't suspect the murderer, and I was worried that he was going to be unduly exploited by Richie to get his own way.

Anyway, I'm enjoying watching Father Brown for daytime television, along with Law and Order, Magnum, P. I. (the original one) and a dose of Superstore and the occasional Hallmark movie.

The Theatre of the Invisible

An episode Lord Reith would had been proud of. A radio quiz is going to be broadcast live from Kembleford. Bunty, Mrs McCarthy and local landlady Mrs Rudge all want to be the finalists for the live show.

The presenters and the producer are all staying at Mrs Rudge's guest house and they are not keen on the landlady. Mrs Rudge is not happy as to how she has been whittled out from the final and then she is found dead from smoke inhalation.

The BBC radio team are the suspects and then one of them is also killed.

An nice murder mystery with a lot of potential suspects. Old time comedian Barney Butterfield, camp and waspish Richie Queenan and pianist Joyce Merriman.

Father Brown has to do some sideways thinking to work out the culprit.
