I saw this movie in the cinema with high expectations from the general Danish media reviews. I was unfortunately disappointed. Sure the acting is good and the portrait of John Mogensen and his time comes across as believable. But I was missing the pub environment and his drinking and the self destruction that this led to. Instead we get the buying of a summerhouse and random interactions with his wife and daughter and band members.

Horrible mess with pretentious elements

Warning: Spoilers
This movie was praised in Danish media when it was released, but it falls in every typical Danish movie trap imaginable. Danish movie makers like Bornedal, have a tendency to overuse melancholy elements in an attempt to seem intelligent and emotional, but it never comes across as anything other than boring and depressing. An example in this movie is a segment where its supposed to work out for John Mogensen, but rather than playing his music, its scored in depressing piano with slow images. bare in mind the irony that this man made some of the most cheerful tunes in Danish music. And yes it is important to show the bad sides of his life but this is just a mess with random encounters and no composure - its just scrambled. Bornedal should quit, but he is probably already working on his next extremely melancholy movie, because that is apparently the only emotion Danish directors are taught.
