The title "The 43rd Annual People's Choice Awards" is pretty telling what to expect in these 1.5 hours. It is for the people to decide again what they liked most about the last year in movies, television, social media and more. And the results here are pretty much evidence that sometimes it is good to have more competent people in charge when making certain decision. I mean this is the event where Jennifer Lopez, Sofia Vergara and Sarah Jessica Parker won major awards. Enough said I guess, even if you cannot only blame the folks here as Parker for example was also nominated for a Golden Globe back then. But still there are major flaws here. Many categories are just randomly thrown in with display who won which is really disrespectful in my opinion and not just the smaller ones. I think even Favorite Movie which should actually be the biggest category of the night did not get any screen time at all. That one went to Finding Dory by the way. I guess it would not have been too interesting to have the producers/directors on stage. But the win is not too surprising given this event's love for Ellen DeGeneres. Does not really say anything too positive about her being the record holder here. And she was heavily featured again back in 2017. As for other problems with the show: Is stuff like Favorite Year-End Blockbuster, Favorite Social Media Celebrity, Favorite Digital Obsession or Favorite Actress In A New TV Series really required? At least not if Kristen Bell wins it I suppose. Apart from that those lifetime achievement awards or special honoree moments going to DeGeneres and Kevin Hart (it was him right?) may not be the greatest choices in my opinion admittedly. Completely subjective. There were two music performances which was good I think not enough, not too little. Blake Shelton was certainly one of the better moments of the night, Fifth Harmony on the other end of the scale I guess. The host was Joel McHale and he was really bland and forgettable when he was even seen, sure did not have a great deal of screen time and eventually it was certainly not my loss that I had no clue who he was initially (and afterwards). most wins of the night went to Britney Spears, but while she would have dominated the night in terms of stage presence 20 years ago, she was barely seen this time, which is bizarre as she was the biggest winner of the night. Instead they focused on the big male names I guess. The final award of the night went to Johnny Depp who was oh so grateful. Was he really? So yeah they watched who would win and gave them the time in the spotlight, the name of the category was not really relevant. I think you can only partially blame them. There were many writers working on this show, but they never managed to give it at least an interesting aura where you could wonder what happens next who wins next. But it just wasn't working out. I must also say that most of the winners are not exactly to my liking. Lawrence, Bell, DeGeneres, McCarthy (even if she was great in her more recent film), Hart, Downey, Reynolds... great deal of mediocrity there. Kinda nice to see BIg Bang Theory win though. Parsons, Harmon, LeBlanc and This is Us are probably also not undeserving. Shame Parsons wasn't there. Still these winenrs did not really get any screen time either so I struggle with really applauding their wins. What felt really strange was seeing Bill Paxton there who looked really fine and healthy and knowing what happened about a month later. Nobody would have guessed. Overall this is not among the best or worst People's Choice Awards I have seen. The good news is that it essentially manages to stay an awards show in its entirety, which should not be taken for granted today especially when it comes to music awards shows, but sadly it is really not a very intriguing awards show by any means. Watch something else instead.
