Slightly better than the series, but still a Bizarre premise.

Warning: Spoilers
Bizarre character premise that's reminiscent of "Strike Witches" but further into left field.

The "Unknown Enemy attacking Earth" is a tried and true trope, but scantily clad, pale and uncommunicative 14 year old girls seems an odd choice to represent the enemy, but even stranger is what defends humanity. 14 year old girls skating through the water with miniature Battleship turrets / parts hanging off their legs and backs. That is unless the girls are "Carriers" and then they have part of the Aircraft Carrier's deck hanging from their waists (and arms once they "equip").

The enemy "Abyssal" monsters were interesting, some appearing to be giant mutant demonic whales, others warped crabs or other creatures.

Combats seemed really odd as the girls tiny weapons fired disproportionately large shells and arrows fired from the "Carrier Group" turned into squadrons of what appeared to be "Zero's". Additionally the combats were without any real substance, there was no real danger. When the fleet groups were outnumbered massively and under fire they would escape nearly unscathed, but when convenient for the story a lone enemy fighter will "sink" one of the girls with a single shot.

Overall in a very broad brush way the story unfolds along the lines of "Strike Witches", a new addition to the group without combat experience, who's also supposed to be exceptionally powerful, performs poorly at first but makes the decision to work hard and train to become the best all the while being insanely cheerful. Add the typical stumbles, comic relief in the form of horrible performance while training, pair of extra supportive friends, an idol to look up to, random naval terms inserted into every conversation and you have a very silly trope filled series.

If you're a fan of the "Magical Girls" genre (yes they aren't magical but in every other way it fits) this will likely be enjoyable, but if not I'd suggest a hard pass.

Pros:
  • Interesting monsters.
  • Unique costumes for some of the ship classes.
  • None of the random Ecchi moments of "Strike Witches".
  • Above average and consistent animation.
  • Flashbacks have a very noir feel, cleanly delineating it.
  • English Dubbing.

Cons:
  • Exceptionally predictable.
  • Silly to a fault.
  • Depends to heavily on "Deus Ex Machina" moments.
  • Unexplained and random scantily clad "Bunny Girl"' (Ship groups typically have matching outfits / uniforms).

It's uh... unusual

Insanity, this is thy playground.

This film is highly creative, but leaves one wondering whether it's creativity or insanity that sparks the plot. Evidently based on a TV series, it appears one would have to watch the series first to even begin to understand what's going on here.

Take your everyday anime girliscious, allow her to float/walk/skim on ocean waters, load her down with miniaturized battleship weaponry and airplanes manned by teeny, tiny girls / robots / whatever they are... and you have a movie that makes no sense. Those who stick through to the end will be no more informed than those who stop halfway through.

I really tried to give this 4 stars, but there just wasn't enough good stuff in this to squeak out of the 3-star "goofy movie" slot. This might work as a "rainy Saturday popcorn" movie or "bring your friends over for beer and laughs". It's somewhat interesting to watch but total nonsense.

It is true: anime has been making the weirdest stuff on the planet for decades.

Understanding a Different Culture
dncorp4 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
After the World War Two Defeat of Militaristic Japan. The Japanese Culture went to the Opposite Extreme of Pacifists. The New Japanese Military as the Japanese Defense Force were barely Tolerated. Most of Japan's World War Two History was no longer taught in Japanese Schools just like how Germany no longer taught any History about World War Two and made Nationalist Socialist German Worker's Party a Political Labor Union Party Symbols Illegal.

Japanese World War Two Combat Ships as cute "Fleet Girls", to bring the audience to have sympathy of inanimate objects (Japanese World War Two Warships)as anthropomorphism and or personification by being the "Fleet Girls" that have their own Human Emotions and Feelings.

By studying a Nation's Entertainment you can sometimes see that Nation's Values, Mores, Norms, Morality, Humanity, Standards, those things that they want, as well as their evil side, as Cultural Anthropology. Cultural Anthropology can be used as a Weapon, or to Enhance Military Capabilities against a Targeted Nation.

An example of others to Study and Learn from other Cultures was ever since Western Dictionaries included the Japanese Word "Sushi" in the English Language Collegiate Dictionaries (1800s) the English Definition of "Sushi" was "Raw Fish". With those doing this refusing to ask the Japanese that also Spoke Fluent English and or American English, as they would have been told that Sushi was the Rice that is used to pack and preserve "Raw Fish", "Raw Fish" being "Sashimi".

Another Cultural Difference that costs lives, was at some Nations what Americans use as hand signals to stop, actually means come to me at other Nations. With Innocent Civilians not knowing this and U.S. and NATO Military Previously told this, the U.S. and NATO Military at a Checkpoint use the Stop hand signal because they cannot speak the local language, the Civilians keep approaching every time the hand signal to stop is used. The Civilians are then shot to death. Currently most Military I talked to were never taught the proper hand signal to stop or come to them, or the basic words of those Nations of Stop or Come Here. And will soon be Deployed to those Nations.

Love it!

I have played the game of KanCollect for a long time. Though this movie is not as good as what I have expected, the TV version and the game is excellent. I had a very good plot and I do recommend everyone who likes this kind of movie to watch it. The Girl and Panzar is another show that has a similar world setting but that one is dealing with tanks.
