In this second episode of season 2 of Michael's great railway journeys across the USA he travels to Hermann, which was proudly settled by Germans many, many years ago. To this day it maintains a distinctive German heritage with wine and song and so on, even though some political leaders eschew American hyphenated nationalities if you know what I mean. We learn that during World War 1, the Germans in Hermann came under close scrutiny from the Government. I guess they should be thankful that they weren't rounded up en masse for internment like the innocent Americans of Japanese descent in California and elsewhere during World War 2. Perhaps there's a sinister pecking order when it comes to internments in the USA maybe.
Don't mention the war and don't mention Fawlty Towers if you know what I mean.
