Fun with the jester
TheLittleSongbird27 June 2023
Did like Season 1 of 'Be Cool Scooby Doo' on the whole, it took a while to find its feet fully in terms of the plotting and some of the character writing but the energy and humour on the most part were great and there were plenty of cool villains. When though it hit its stride in the second half of the season, with its more consistent quality and higher number of great episodes, the season at its best was quite great despite the animation style never being to my taste (which sadly only saw marginal improvement in Season 2).

"Renn Scare" was a fun and well done episode, elevated by the humour and a great villain. It is though not one of my favourites from 'Be Cool Scooby Doo' and is a step down from the previous three episodes, which fared a little better in their mysteries and had better supporting characters. Really did like the concept for "Renn Scare", which sounded quite inventive for 'Be Cool Scooby Doo', and it was a great concept executed very well indeed and at its best excellently.

It is not flawless. Other than the great character design for the villain, he animation quality still isn't to my taste. Too rushed and garish looking and too many of the characters are off model.

Also found the king and the investor very annoying characters and their voice acting was too on the hammy side. The episode could have done a better job with providing more clues to the identity of the culprit and the truth, there were hardly any and it made the denouement feel like it was introduced too out of the blue.

However, these are all outweighed by the good things. Which are many. Absolutely loved the inventive and colourful setting, which the writers clearly had a whale of a time using, and even more so the well designed and creepy villain in the form of a jester ghost. It is also interesting for it being the first 'Be Cool Scooby Doo' villain to properly speak and it was a voice that was freaky and fitted the character really well. Despite the out of the blue way it's introduced, the denouement is still well staged and clever as well as not too obvious.

The voice acting on the whole was good, especially for the villain (like the way the creepy riddles are spoken) and Matthew Lillard as Shaggy. While "Renn Scare" may not deliver on the supporting characters and the clues, it more than delivers on the humour. Which is never less than very funny and often hilarious, especially Shaggy and Scooby pointing out the amount of times they have been chased, the tricking of the villain, the wonderfully random dungeon escape and Daphne's reaction to the king wanting her to clean. Velma as a baby was so cute.

Furthermore, the gang are well characterised and interact well, their care for Shaggy obvious, while the voice acting is great. The music is groovy and atmospheric and the mystery never lets go when it comes to the energy without being too relentless. The atmosphere is also strong and it never feels too simple or too complicated. The writing is funny and smart on the whole.

Concluding, good but not great. 7/10.
