Katie Couric was taping an episode of her new National Geographic docuseries in Charlottesville, Va., last year when the alt-right protest there turned violent. One of her camera operators was hit with a “urine bomb” — something Couric had never even heard of until that day.
“It was scary, I was scared,” Couric told IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast. “The number of guns that were there, with an open carry state, and the number of various Neo-Nazi groups, it was quite terrifying. The scariest things was the number of young men who participated in this. Young men in their 20s, which was unsettling to say the least.”
A year after her landmark documentary “Gender Revolution,” Couric is back on National Geographic channel to explore some of the most important issues and questions facing America today. In “America Inside Out with Katie Couric,” the former “Today” and “CBS Evening News” anchor...

Katie Couric says her new National Geographic series “America Inside Out” tackles issues like religious division, the white working class and political correctness “that really aren’t being covered adequately in the mainstream media,” the journalist told TheWrap.
“The news cycle is so fast and furious now,” Couric said, explaining her desire to do the series to TheWrap’s Sharon Waxman at the Power Women Breakfast Austin last month.
The six-part docu-series, which premieres Wednesday, features interviews with people from across the country on topics including political correctness, the impact of the white working class on the 2016 presidential election, controversial monuments and statues and being Muslim in America.
“There’s so much obsession — understandably so — over the president’s latest tweet, some of the things that he’s said or drama inside the West Wing,” she continued. “I don’t think enough people are taking a step back and saying, ‘What are some of the pressing issues that are dividing us? What are some of the things that people are reacting to and not thinking about?'”

Couric said the show aims to help people escape their political echo chambers in an era when Americans are getting “affirmation, not information” from their news feeds.
“There’s this instantaneous judgment in our society right now, because of social media, because of our tribalism, because of our silos,” she said. “These conversations aren’t happening.”

The series marks Couric’s second project with Nat Geo, following last year’s two-hour documentary “Gender Revolution.”
“It was really fun and a great eye-opening experience,” Couric said. “I hope, through everything I’ve learned in the process, that people watching will learn.”

Watch your back, Hulu. IndieWire surveyed 15 network toppers this summer on a range of questions, including the show they’d most like to steal from a rival. The top show they coveted was easily Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the timely story of a totalitarian dystopia that is on track to potentially win the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy this month.
Execs also raved about a variety of other recent series, including the HBO documentary “The Defiant Ones,” about the relationship between billionaire music moguls Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre. And the network honchos were given a chance to single out an upcoming (or recently aired) show that they believe is destined to become a surprise hit. As the industry prepares for another fall season, here’s some insight into what TV’s top executives are thinking, and what’s concerning them most.

Art meets science on Nat Geo’s series “Breakthrough,” when critically acclaimed filmmakers like Ana Lily Amirpour decide to put their skills into telling stories about the latest innovations and how they can change our lives.
The “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” director spoke to IndieWire about why she decided to direct an episode of the series, which returns for a second season on Tuesday, May 2.
“I was excited to collaborate with Nat Geo because I’ve been a fan of since I was a kid; I grew up watching shows on nature and science with my Dad, who’s also a big fan,” she said. “And when I sat down with the producers of ‘Breakthrough,’ discussing possible topics I could tackle, I found myself drawn to the topic of cancer treatment without really knowing why.

Another trans documentary, another disappointment. Following the release of National Geographic’s tone-deaf “Gender Revolution: A Journey With Katie Couric,” YouTube Red presents “This is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous,” a lifestyle portrait of transgender YouTuber Gigi Gorgeous that also misses the mark, this time from two-time Oscar winning director Barbara Kopple.
Multi-faceted and charming transgender characters are beginning to populate narrative film and television: “Orange is the New Black,” “Transparent,” and “Tangerine” have all placed transgender people at the center of their own narratives, in stories that move beyond transition and into the rest of their lives. As queer filmmakers push beyond hackneyed coming-out narratives, trans stories (and those wishing to tell them) have the added responsibility to reject the public’s fascination with medical transition. However, despite a wealth of fascinating trans stories to choose from, commercial documentaries are lagging behind.
