Kevin Smith’s new film, The 4:30 Movie, has been shot and has now been snapped up for distribution worldwide: more here.
Rest is not on the agenda for Kevin Smith, who in recent times has invested in the cinema he frequented when he was younger, rebranding it The Smodcastle Cinemas. He co-owns the site, and also shot a film there by the name of The 4:30 Movie.
Starring Austin Zajur, Nicholas Cirillo and Reed Northrup, The 4:30 Movie is described as a 1986-set comedy of age comedy, centred on three 16-year old chums who sneak into the movies every Saturday. What’s this, though? One of them, one day, invites a girl? Honestly. Tsk. Etc. She’s played by Siena Agudong, and also in the cast are Justin Long, Harley Quinn Smith, Keon Jeong and Jason Lee.

There was a time when Kevin Smith was regarded as being one of the definitive filmmakers of Generation X. His feature directing debut on the shoestring-budgeted 1994 indie hit "Clerks" suggested Smith not only had a firm understanding of the slacker mentality that afflicted so many people in his age bracket, but he was also shrewd enough to be critical of it. The film centers on disgruntled Quick Stop Groceries clerk Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) and those in his immediate vicinity, including his equally-cynical, unmotivated best friend Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) and the off-beat drug dealers that loiter outside the store: loud-mouthed horny miscreant Jay (Jason Mewes) and his reserved yet secretly wise companion Silent Bob (Smith). As colorful as these characters were, they also felt like real people you could imagine Smith knew growing up on his home turf of New Jersey.

Snoogins! Kevin Smith says he’s bringing Jay and Silent Bob back for another movie! Do you know what that means? More stoner absurdity, crude humor, and convenience store loitering! Let’s go!
“Right now as we speak, I’m writing another Jay and Silent Bob movie,” Smith told PopCulture.com. The 53-year-old Swiss army knife of cinematic talent says he lost a bet to his friend and co-star Jason Mewes, and now the dynamic duo is poised to roll more blunts, drink beers, and groove to Morris Day and the Time! “For me and Jay, we always kind of have fun doing those and stuff, so I lost a bet with him. And so I’m writing another Jay and Bob movie,” said Smith.

Four years after the characters headlined Jay & Silent Bob: Reboot, Kevin Smith is plotting the next chapter for the stoner duo.
Filmmaker Kevin Smith has revealed that he’s working on another film featuring the characters Jay & Silent Bob, the latter of which he also plays onscreen.
The two lovable stoners have featured in Smith’s films ever since the director made his filmmaking debut with Clerks in 1994. The duo’s most recent headlining film came four years ago in the form of Jay & Silent Bob: Reboot.
He did a podcast special with us about that very film, here.
Smith has made a habit in recent years of returning to his stable of ‘View Askewniverse’ characters.

"Tusk" was a theatrical experience that I will never forget. The trailer did not give much away, and it was difficult to tell whether Kevin Smith was aiming for parody or serious horror. Was this really about someone being held captive by a seaman with an affinity for walruses? The idea for "Tusk" began with a SModcast episode where Smith and his friend/producer Scott Mosier poked fun at a classified advertisement made by a homeowner who offered free lodging to someone if they dressed as a walrus for two hours a day. The strange, real-life story inspired a brainstorming session about how they might bring the story to life on film.
"I could have easily just been like, 'Oh, that was a stupid stoner idea that I won't follow through on,' but, I don't know, there seemed to be a lot of nobility in taking a stoner idea...

Evidently, audiences want to see the William Shatner documentary “You Can Call Me Bill” so badly that a good chunk of them were willing to pay for it to be made in the first place.
“You Can Call Me Bill” premieres Thursday at SXSW, with Shatner himself set for a keynote conversation at the festival alongside the doc’s debut. But the film came about through an equity crowdfunding experiment by the film’s producers, Legion M. The production company’s principals Paul Scanlan and Jeff Annison tell IndieWire that “You Can Call Me Bill” managed to raise over $750,000 in a span of just four days. That number easily surpassed the film’s lean budget and has fueled its appearance and promotion at SXSW this week.

Lionsgate is by no means the biggest studio in Hollywood. The house of the "John Wick," "Saw" and "Hunger Games" franchises is what is known in the industry is a mini-major, meaning it's not as big as Disney or Warner Bros., but not as small as Neon or STX. It's somewhere in the middle. Be that as it may, as the industry continues to emerge from the pandemic, Lionsgate is putting together a winning strategy, as evidenced by the company's most recent quarterly earnings report. In short, it's because they're not playing the same, big streaming game that everyone else is playing.
For the company's third quarter of its current fiscal year, revenue hit 1 billion, absolutely smashing Wall Street expectations. Part of that has to do with Starz, which Lionsgate owns (we'll get to that), but what's most interesting is what wasn't on the sheet driving that revenue. For one,...

The killer moose movie Moose Jaws has been brewing in the mind of Kevin Smith for several years now. The project, which has always been described as simply “Jaws with a moose“, was meant to wrap up Smith’s True North Trilogy, which began with Tusk and continued with Yoga Hosers… but for some reason, it has proven to be more difficult to get Moose Jaws into production than its predecessors. The Moose Jaws problem may have been solved, as during a recent convention appearance Smith gave a positive update on the long-awaited horror film.
Speaking at GalaxyCon in Columbus, Ohio, Smith revealed that Moose Jaws is expected to be one of the next five movies he makes and will be a continuation of the working relationship he has established with Lionsgate. As he explained, “(Moose Jaws) is a movie I’ve been threatening to make for a long time,...

Those only familiar with Kevin Smith's more recent films, like "Clerks III" or "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot," which are pretty intensely absurdist and lined with in-jokes, may be surprised to see the kind of film Smith's career started with.
"Clerks" is an extremely low-key film: A black and white picture that simply focuses on two buddies spending the day working at a convenience store. The film's modesty is in part a result of its shoestring budget. It was Kevin Smith's first feature film as a director, and in order to scrape together the measly budget of 27,575 he had to max out ten credit cards and sell his comic book collection, among other things.
His hard work and sacrifice paid off, however, as the movie was positively received and made 4 million at the box office, which was a huge success compared to the budget. With this moderate success, Smith...

The original "Clerks" is a cult comedy classic, a movie made for next-to-nothing by first-time director Kevin Smith, starring a bunch of his friends in a convenience store. The sincere yet directionless Dante, who's "not even supposed to be here today," and his motor-mouthed pop culture-obsessed best friend Randal spend most of the movie riffing with each other and the bizarre customers that frequent their Quick Stop.
This indie darling spawned the View Askewniverse, which includes "Chasing Amy," "Dogma," "Mallrats," "Clerks II," a "Clerks" animated series, and comic book, both "Jay and Silent Bob" movies, and now "Clerks III." So technically, Kevin Smith beat Marvel to the punch regarding interconnected cinematic universes. (Just saying.)
"Clerks III" picks up with Randal and Dante, now middle-aged and not much further ahead in life. Sure they co-own the Quick Stop now, but after a heart attack that nearly kills Randal, he is inspired...

Mallrats 2
Smith’s 1995 film Mallrats wasn’t a box office success, but that hasn’t stopped talk of a sequel coming up here and there over the years – whether it would be a “Die Hard in a Mall” scenario, a limited series, or something completely different. The problem is that Mallrats is a Universal property, so Smith can’t do anything with it unless the studio is on board.

We’re still knee deep in the current box office slump, with five weeks left until Halloween Ends carries us out of it. However, after a better than expected 42.3 million overall box office last weekend (a 24 drop) and solid buzz on this weekend’s The Woman King and next weekend’s Don't Worry Darling, it looks like we may be able to weather the storm without hitting a new low overall weekend low for the year (January 28-30’s 34.9 million gross is the number to beat). This would only be a minor consolation, and we may not see a single weekend even get over 60 million until October 14-16, but having a few doubles and triples will tide theaters over until the upcoming season of homeruns and grand slams.
The biggest release this weekend is Sony/TriStar’s The Woman King, which should open in the mid teens from 3,700 theaters (including...

While she did make a relatively brief appearance in 2019’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, as a completely different character, Kevin Smith’s Clerks III marks Rosario Dawson’s first major return to Smith’s View Askewniverse since her character Becky Scott debuted in Clerks II back in 2006.
By the end of that film, the sexually liberated, commitment-averse Becky had become pregnant with the child of Clerks mainstay Dante Hicks (Brian O’Halloran) and accepted his sudden proposal of marriage. But the thing about happy endings is they only work if you stop the story at a certain point. Hence why Dawson tells Den of Geek that she was surprised when she read the script for the new movie and learned that Dante and Becky’s journey veers in quite a different direction (which we won’t reveal here).
“He didn’t tell me,” Dawson recalls. “I had to read it [and] experience it for myself.

By his own calculation, writer-director-actor-Comic-Con personality Kevin Smith is not particularly imaginative. “I’m not very creative by any stretch,” the 52-year-old Smith tells Rolling Stone from his home in California, bobble heads bearing his characters’ names stacked in rows behind him. “I just take shit that happened to me and try to extrapolate on that.” The first time he tried this, with 1994’s indie breakout Clerks, he helped set a standard for mid-Nineties burnout culture. At the center of the film is Dante Hicks (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal Graves...

In our age of shared movie and TV universes, there are none quite like Kevin Smith's nearly 30-year-old "View Askewniverse." It's a DIY franchise where actors can play multiple roles, and the heroes are mostly foul-mouthed underachievers. The property can also vary wildly in its tone, from the sentimental and nostalgic later entries to the earlier films, which bring a harder edge to Smith's rude and crude approach to comedy.
Such is the case with "Clerks," the 1994 film that started it all. For as much as its lewd jokes and quotable punchlines stick in one's memory, it's easy to forget just how caustic the movie truly is. Smith's slice-of-life look at a day in the lives of two 20-something friends and store clerks was inspired by his own time working at a Quick Stop (the same one where he shot the film), and it shows. Say what you will about Kevin Smith but ever since his heart attack a handful of years ago, the filmmaker behind "Clerks" has done precisely what he wants to do, and it's hard not to respect it — especially since Smith is making pretty cheap movies like "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot" that aren't putting studios at risk in any way. But Smith may be getting ready to do something truly unexpected as he is apparently aiming to make "Tusk 2" a reality. Yes, it appears Smith is at least toying with the idea of making a sequel to his 2014 walrus horror movie. This is not a joke.
Our very own Lex Briscuso recently spoke with Justin Long, who starred in "Tusk," about his upcoming film "Barbarian." During the conversation, Long revealed that Smith is actually toying with the idea of a sequel. "You'll be happy to hear, Kevin [Smith] just announ-- I mean,...

Kevin Smith’s upcoming meta sequel “Clerks III” is both a tribute to the struggles that Smith endured to make his first film and a celebration of the cinematic universe he built through his company, View Askew Productions. And it just wouldn’t be a View Askewniverse movie without Ben Affleck.
Though Affleck didn’t appear in the original “Clerks,” he has been a fixture in Smith’s films ever since. After famously playing the Asshole From Fashionable Male in “Mallrats” and Holden McNeil in “Chasing Amy,” he had memorable cameos in films like “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” “Clerks II,” and “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.”
So when the time came to shoot the long-delayed “Clerks III,” Smith knew he had to reach out to Affleck about a cameo. And his old friend was happy to oblige.

This script wasn’t even supposed to be here today! Or any day, really. At the premiere of Clerks III, writer, director and Southwest Airlines extra baggage Kevin Smith offered some details about how the movie almost turned out.
In what Kevin Smith called “a movie about dealing with grief”, the original Clerks III script opened during Hurricane Sandy, which pummeled Smith’s home state of New Jersey (and others) in 2012.
“Dante and Randal were locked in a jail because the original version of Clerks III was the opening of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot where the cops come in and bust Jay and Silent Bob.”
Once the gang is released from prison for safety reasons, they find their beloved Quick Stop has been destroyed. To cope, Randal goes to the movies but the picture he wants to see hasn’t been released yet, prompting him to “[build] a lean-to version of Quick Stop,...

In addition to reuniting him with several of the “Clerks” actors whose careers he helped launch back in 1994, “Clerks III” gave Kevin Smith another chance to direct his old friend Ben Affleck in a cameo role — and pay tribute to their long friendship with a very inside joke.
The two previously worked together on several early-career films, including “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma” and “Jersey Girl,” and as Smith told Variety at the new film’s Hollywood premiere at the Chinese 6, Affleck was extremely eager to appear in a cameo as one of several famous faces — including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Danny Trejo and Melissa Benoist — auditioning for a role in the movie-within-a-movie being made by the Quick Stop clerks.
“He was like, ‘I’m there. It’ll be great.’ It was so blissful. He came in for an hour,” said Smith, who, following several years of estrangement, rekindled...

Before he was Thor, Kevin in "Ghostbusters," or even himself in "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot," Chris Hemsworth played James Kirk's father, George Kirk, in J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" movie. It's a weird film to look back on now, so far as Hemsworth's screen time goes. He's only in it for 10 minutes before he dies, with George's heroic sacrifice of his life and space vessel, the USS Kelvin, giving the "Kelvin Timeline" its name in "Star Trek" lore. His death would probably come as an even greater shock to someone watching the film for the first time in 2022, assuming a...

Following the release of "Clerks II" in 2006, fan-favorite writer/director/podcaster Kevin Smith started branching out from his View Askewniverse in 2008 with projects like "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," "Cop Out," and "Red State." However, it never felt like the cinematic universe that birthed Jay and Silent Bob was ever that far away from the New Jersey native. Not only did he release 2013's "Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie!" and eventually "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot" in 2019, but he also continued to tease a third (and final?) chapter for the cult classic saga of "Clerks" in the 14 years since we last saw...

“Clerks III” is finally coming to the big screen, 28 years after the original film latched onto the hearts of millions.
The third installment to Kevin Smith’s cult classic film series has released its first trailer from Lionsgate, teasing the newest chapter to Smith’s “View Askewniverse.”
“Clerks III” is set to follow Randal, played by Jeff Anderson, after he suffers a life-threatening heart attack. With the help of Dante, Elias, Becky, Jay and Silent Bob, Randal sets out to make a movie about the convenience store that started it all. As always, the film is sure to mirror much of Smith’s real life. In fact, Smith himself nearly lost his life in February of 2018 after suffering a heart attack on stage in Glendale, Calif.
The new installment will see most of the original cast return, including Anderson, Brian O’Halloran and Jason Mewes. Rosario Dawson and Trevor Fehrman are...

The slacker heroes of Kevin Smith’s seminal comedy “Clerks” are reuniting once more for “Clerks III” – and this time, they’re growing up and not sitting around waiting for something to happen. That’s right: Instead of just watching movies, they’re going to make their own.
That’s the very “meta” premise of Smith’s “Clerks III,” which Smith first told TheWrap years ago was inspired by his heart attack. It now sees Randal (Jeff Anderson) suffer his own heart attack, which galvanizes him to enlist Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and his other buddies to make a movie about what it’s like working in a convenience store and hanging out with guys like Jay and Silent Bob who forever loiter outside.
“Jay and Silent Bob are like C3PO and R2D2. They’ve been here since the first movie, which is the last time they were cool.

Years in the making, Kevin Smith’s next film is finally getting released, but only a select few will get a chance to see it. The comedy-horror anthology “KillRoy Was Here” will be available exclusively via 5,555 NFTs.
The “KillRoy” NFTs will be available sometime in the next three months on the Legendao platform. They’ll include the movie, exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, a commentary track, and exclusive art. Viewing access to the film will be unavailable to anyone else without the special “crypto key” the Nft provides.
At this time, this is the only planned distribution method for the film — Smith fans shouldn’t count on being able to catch it in a theater or on streaming.
Smith revealed the “KillRoy Was Here” trailer way back in summer 2020 at virtual Comic-Con. The titular character is based on the “Kilroy was here” graffiti phenomenon that dates back to the 1940s: A doodle...

Melissa Benoist could soon be returning to the Berlanti-verse.
Variety has confirmed with sources that Benoist is in talks to star in the series “The Girls on the Bus” at HBO Max, which is executive produced by Greg Berlanti. Berlanti previously executive produced The CW series “Supergirl,” which starred Benoist in the title role.
Reps for HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television declined to comment.
It was announced on Thursday that “The Girls on the Bus” has received a straight-to-series order at HBO Max after previously having been set up at The CW and Netflix. The series is inspired by a chapter in Amy Chozick’s book “Chasing Hillary.” The show is described as a comedic character-driven drama that chronicles four female journalists who follow every move of a parade of flawed presidential candidates, while finding friendship, love, and scandal along the way.
Benoist starred on “Supergirl” throughout the show’s six-season run on CW.

The original Clerks was, arguably, geek culture’s first major shot across the mainstream bow upon its Oct. 1994 release. With the film having rode Cannes Film Festival buzz from earlier that year, the print-media-proliferated story of a regular dude from New Jersey selling his precious comic book collection to help fund his $27,575 indie passion project stoked a cultural curiosity that money couldn’t buy. Of course, said curiosity yielded the breakthrough of a lifetime for the dude in question, Kevin Smith. Now, some 27 years and several shared-universe films later, the filmmaker and recent Masters of the Universe visionary reveals that Clerks III will provide the ultimate onscreen homage to his watershed original: A Jay & Silent Bob dance number.

Kevin Smith’s “Clerks III” has been acquired for release by Lionsgate. The second sequel to Smith’s indie comedy classic will begin filming next month.
Lionsgate took worldwide rights to “Clerks III,” and the film that Smith wrote and will direct is in pre-production now in New Jersey.
The complete “Clerks” cast — including Jeff Anderson as Randal, Brian O’Halloran as Dante, Jay Mewes as Jay, Kevin Smith as Silent Bob and Rosario Dawson as Becky — will return for the third film.
Liz Destro and Jordan Monsanto are producing.
Way back in October 2019, Smith told TheWrap exclusively about the story for “Clerks III,” saying it was inspired by the director’s own heart attack from 2018 that led to his inspiring comeback.
“Randal has a heart attack, decides that he came so close to death and his life has meant nothing. There’s nobody to memorialize him, he has no family or anything like that,...

There are few movies that capture the mid-90s like Mallrats. Whether you find it funny or not, you can’t deny that it perfectly portrays the optimistic countercultural mood of the era. Despite this, the film hasn’t been referenced too many times in Kevin Smith’s expansive View Askewniverse. That’s all set to change with Mallrats 2 – aka Twilight of the Mallrats – though, which is apparently ready to begin production once the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

Though this year’s Comic-Con didn’t happen in person, Kevin Smith still delivered his usual wide-ranging presentation — only this time it was him offering a pre-recorded rundown of his current and future projects to an at-home audience. Among the meatiest developments he shared was releasing the first trailer for his upcoming comedy-horror anthology “Killrory Was Here.”
Smith likened the film to the 1982 George A. Romero anthology “Creepshow” or Brad Miska’s 2012 “V/H/S.”
“It’s got a theme that runs through it, in as much as our monster Killroy, and all these little stories that happen around him. He’s kind of like a kid-avenger — if you fuck with kids, Killroy will show up,” he said.
The titular character is based on the “Kilroy was here” graffiti phenomena that’s been around since the 1940s: A doodle of a bald-headed man peeking over a wall with his enormous...

Once upon a time Kevin Smith had a dream to make a Krampus movie—a horror anthology film based around the anti-Santa Claus monster of Germanic folklore. But then Michael Dougherty went and made Krampus in 2015, so Smith had to improvise. Luckily this is the guy who made Clerks for $28,000—being creative with resources is kind of in his wheelhouse. Thus began the genesis of Killroy Was Here, an all-original horror movie that looks to be very much in the vein of one of Smith’s previous cult chillers, Tusk.
A film that Smith made in tandem with students at the Ringling College of Art and Design, Killroy Was Here has been a bit of an enigma for Smith fans over the years. Working from a screenplay by Smith and Andrew McElfresh, Smith and his crew of budding filmmakers began shooting in Sarasota, Florida in 2017. But after Smith suffered a heart attack that same year,...

Filmmaker and fanboy extraordinaire Kevin Smith is having a birthday party and everyone is invited! The Clerks director has set a one-night-only drive-in movie pop up event where he will screen Jay and Silent Bob Reboot followed by a Q&a with the birthday boy himself. The event will take place at Paramount Drive-in Theaters on August 3. Proceeds from the event will benefit the LA Food Bank.
In addition, there will be a Mooby’s pop-up at the event. The pop-up restaurant, which opened for a limited time in April in Los Angeles, is based on the fictional fast-food chain from films such as Dogma, Clerks II, and, of course, the Jay and Silent Bob franchise. The Mooby’s pop-up has since launched nationwide with delivery kits exclusively on Gold Belly.

You wouldn’t expect the company behind Power Rangers or Jay and Silent Bob Reboot to be throwing their hat into the ring when it comes to disturbing sci-fi thrillers, but Saban Films nonetheless picked up the rights to Vivarium back in May. The movie gained plenty of buzz when it first hit VOD, and now that it’s arrived on Amazon Prime, a much larger number of viewers than ever before will be able to discover just why people were getting so creeped out.
Starring Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots, Vivarium follows a young couple trying to purchase a home, before they end up being brought to a complex of identical empty houses where they realize they’re trapped and a whole host of strange and downright unsettling things start happening. The movie fared pretty well with critics and currently holds a solid Rotten Tomatoes score of 71% from 133 reviews,...
