Great cinematography! Not so great editing.
verisww19 January 2019
Great cinematography! Incredible camera work. I felt like I was in the water and some scenes were unique compared to other movies of same genre. Having said that I gave only 5 stars for a reason. A movie is a story therefore the script and editing is just as important as the camerawork. This story did not unfold easily especially in the first half of movie. For that part I would have given a 2 but the cinematography is a 8 or better.

I'm afraid I was comparing it to 127 hours. That was an amazing script, editing, and acting. In this movie the script and editing were lacking. I am not familiar with the main actor, Alain Hernandez. Maybe he is a good actor but the script writer gave him very little to work with. That is where some great acting and great camerawork can reveal a story better than a script. It did not happen here.

Ultimately I believe the script writer did not capture the real story of survival.

Visually Beautiful, but Empty and Lifeless
ModishMovies16 January 2019
The camerawork is absolutely stunning and vivid, creating a genuinely chaotic and natural experience. I also appreciated the fact that this film used many real locations instead of heavy CGI and studio sets.

But then the awful structuring of the narrative ruins all sense of tension and unease. The film begins in medias res for absolutely no reason and while it might seem cool at first, it feels laughably dumb afterward. The contrived romance was not only disruptive but also painfully pretentious. It strives for greater importance in the story and characters when there really isn't anything there to begin with.

The survival story isn't even that exciting or unique. It's been done before and certainly far better. 127 Hours immediately comes to mind, but even The Revenant has a few individual scenes that surpass everything this film tries to accomplish with masterful technique and stunning beauty. It's commendable for being a true story and for having stunning cinematography, but what's the point of adapting this man's story into a film when it doesn't bring anything necessary or unique to cinema?

Solo, singularly insulting cinema through and through. Underwhelming boredom
luisrealme18 December 2020
Bad acting, slow, idle, bad and boring story, too many flashbacks filled with surf scenes sprinkled with short scenes of mediocre acting w by unknown rookie actors. Most of his acting consisted of dragging himself across a small beach with his arms. Being a fan of Spaniard cinema, I think this movie is an insult to theater, or a fart emulating nothingness. On the bright side, the underwater photography (2% of the movie) was beautiful. Would strongly recommend skipping this movie altogether if you don't want to finish it and want to punch yourself in the face for wasting that hour and a half on this absolute piece of garbage.

Was praying for a shark
daniel-c-willey22 December 2020
The most painfully slow movie I've ever seen. I was just praying for a massive shark to rock up and gobble him up so the movie could end. Do not watch this junk.

Slow
konstantin-irina13 January 2019
This sounds like a tense survival movie but turns out to be a slow movie with retropectives & dreams filling the gaps in the first half of the film. Gets a bit better in the second half.

Surprisingly Good

A movie not just about survival but also about love and relationships. Beautifully shot water and sand scenes. Slow? Well, definitely not for the superhero generation.

Solo is just of waste of time

Warning: Spoilers
This was such a frustrating movie with long drawn out scenes.not enjoyable at all. This movie budget was 1$. Some scenes you don't know if he halusnating or this is real or somthing from the past you can't be sure. It is all over the place and the editing is messy. The cuts between each scene were poorly put together.

Beautifully shot ..... can't deny the gorgeous scenery ... but otherwise it's an hour and a half of a grown man crying and whining

Based on True Story
shelbreezy18 July 2021
Many are rating it low, without knowing that it is based on a true story. It is slow because it is real, it is what he was going throw. This is not an action packed fiction but instead a story on true survival of a man alone and dying.

Too vividly remeniscent
Cls-Wolfencliffe4630 March 2020
When surfing in Encinitas, CA in 1990, I experienced being swept against the rocks, unable to resist the surges, but luckily found a purchase and crawled up on dry land. These scenes are horrendously reminiscent of that terrifying event in my life.

Why didn't someone write a better film
hedrummond28 February 2019
Since there was already a film out there that tackled a similar subject, why the hell didn't someone check it out before attempting to make this film. Of course, I am referring to "127 Hours" starring James Franco. All they needed to do was watch the film one time and they could have avoided all of the pot-holes that this film slipped into. I don't know that this actor could have been as charismatic or interesting because there is just so much one can do other than arching an eyebrow and wearing a perpetual brood-on. Honestly, they could have even added a bit of suspense to it. Sure it was a scary segment when the actor has his slip and falls and all but slides off the cliff, however, not much else happens. I mean Franco was stuck in a crevasse between a veritable "rock and a hard place". I mean literally and he has his arm pinned under a boulder, however, he, at least, kept you interested and enthralled in the arc of this story about a petulant, funny guy, who is a bit of a selfish sort who learns life lessons during the course the story and kept the audience on the edge of their seats. Unfortunately, the people making this haven't seen this film or were so sure that their story would just pull you along due to grabbing the audience's interest just failed to do that. No where was I even interested in this guy's survival. I became divorced from the film about 15 minutes in, so with all the talking going on and the fact that neither the lead of the other characters really interested me. I found the characters in the opening of "Jaws" at the beach party to be far more interesting and they were only in the film for about the first 10 minutes. Sorry, I rate this a total dud.

Could have been a lot better
ThironthoramDude22 January 2019
Based on a true story, solo describes the ordeal of a surfer who falls off the cliff and is left stranded. The protagonist , in his loneliness, remembers all the choices he made in his life while conversing with figments of his imagination. He pretty much messed up his own life and this gave him the will power to fight for his survival. The makers could have done a better job of portraying these and I feel they missed on a golden opportunity there.

Disappointing comparing to 127h
itspax14 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Totally disappointed about this movie. Thought about something like 127h and kinda it is, but its so slow and not interesting. The first half is totally irrelevant. The movie has sudden cuts (so you are totally out of the survival scenes and you see him talking in the future about what happend...). The last 1/3 is ok, but still nothing to recommend.

Very slow
alsoufi27 February 2019
It was very slow.. boring, I would call it silent movie that does not have excitement in it until I realized that it was a true story so I'll give it 6 instead of 4.

Picasso painting

Survival movie with a heavy mix of stress and mood. Another signature of Spanish filmmakers: boring relationships, tears, fight, depressing music and a girl. Boring. Shark was needed to eat him. Poor performance. Watched only 20 min.

Nightmare (scenario)
kosmasp8 July 2019
There are situations you do not wish upon other people (not even your enemies if you are a decent human being). But our main character here finds himself in a position where he seems helpless ... is helpless. If the movie only had him for the whole running time, we might have gotten bored, but the movie knows we need more and we get exactly that.

Like with 127 hours we get flashbacks and other "flashes" too. Like with that American movie (both based on true stories), we also need a strong actor in the main role. I personaly think he carries the load, but in the end it's something you have to decide ... Overall a more than decent effort and if you don't get bored by movies like this, you will like it

MUCH BETTER THAN 4.9 SUGGESTS. EXQUISITE CINEMATOGRAPHY
jmvscotland27 March 2021
I consider myself a pretty damned good judge of movies. Almost always my score out of 10 is within a trice of the overall score on IMDb. Perhaps that just means my taste in movies is average at best.

With that in mind though, I really can't understand why this movie "Solo" has garnered so many poor reviews and rates only 4.9 over all.

Certainly, it's a simple movie and not very much happens. But I think that's really the point. It's a simple story. About how easy it is to find oneself in terrible, life-threatening trouble when things go unpredictably wrong.

There was one enormous stand out in this movie for me though. I just loved the cinematography. It's quite spectacular and leaves me with a fervent desire to go to Fuerteventura some time when travel is again possible after Covid. Fuerteventura just looks spectacularly rugged and beautiful and this movie shows it off perfectly.

It's a remarkable story of survival against considerable odds and all the better for it.

Forget the rating of only 4.9 Solo bears repeat viewing for me and is much, much better than that score suggests.

Like many other productions by the company, Netflix should be proud of this one.

Nice to watch. Beautiful cinematografie. Made me think of 'the revenant' i some wierd way. But awsome true story, some parts are slow but it fits the story. Father son relationship is missing some debt. But the cinematografie and the beautiful landscapes made it very nice to watch.

Nice meaning...
mslady-0585714 January 2019
This movie was very slow. I did not except it to have a pretty good meaning behind it. Way deeper than just the lost in sea kinda movie. Very slow ,some would even say boring. I give it 3 stars because I did like how it ended, and was not aware this was a true story untill the end
