Warms the Heart
ruth19643 May 2019
This movie touched my heart. In a world of million dollar action movies, this brought me back to the complex, yet oh so important need for family. In this case, food was the conduit. And who doesn't feel even more emotion when food is involved. Relax, give yourself a treat, and succumb to a truly meaningful slice of life.

Fabulous food and Family feud
chong_an21 March 2019
This is like Crazy Rich Asians, minus the crazy rich, but a bit stretched out in time (see belelsene's review). A young chef leaves Japan for Singapore, location of his early life, searching for his maternal family, the secrets to his mother's notebook, and recipes to bring home. Along the way, he learns of the humble origins of the popular noodles, Singapore food, and the origin of his mother-in-law's distaste for his father.

Deeply Affecting and Poignant Film
Megan_Shida1 December 2019
This film offers a simple tale of a young man trying to form a bond with his late mother. When the film works, it is quiet, delicate, and sincere. That being said, there are times when the dialogue can seem a bit forced and contrived. The journey of the lead character is deeply enriched with wonderful food and culture. The film is beautifully shot and has moments that are deeply profound. T

touching

A correct, touching film about past, family, reconciliation. And, off course, food. Clash of cultures, old traumas, delicate definitions of obstacles and reconquest of the past states , well acted and a storytelling reminding slow way of water , it is just touching and beautiful and seductive in profound senses.

I've Seen Tampopo. This, Sir, Is No Tampopo.
Minnesota_Reid2 May 2019
This movie, while not bad, was a real disappointment. It is quite slow and disengaged. It leaned too heavily on nostalgia and melancholy, without a trace of humor to leaven things. The lead actor was handsome but not at all charismatic. He relied very heavily at looking moody and hurt. His other emotions were never convincing, like a time when he loses his temper and has an angry fit.

At least the secondary leads -- Uncle from now, Mom from the past, the potential love interest -- were much more interesting and perked up the movie as much as they could.

Slow but entertaining
arw-1840121 July 2019
First: the great grand father of the main character got killed during WW2, so belelsene has got the timeline wrong. Enjoyable movie, although not much is happening.

Delightful food-theme film
jcprimeau23 June 2021
I generally enjoy films where food is a major theme (e.g. Babette's Feast, The Lunchbox). This shows a really interesting combination of culinary traditions with both Japanese and Singapore Chinese cuisines. The main character is searching for his origins in tracing back his mother's recipe for pork rib ramen soup. This is a truly heart-warming and uplifting film and not saccharine in any way.

A minor classic
donrose-2389628 August 2019
I began watching this to take up time recovering from minor illnes. But gradually came to realise I n was watching something special.

The movie examines the misery brought on others through meaness and attitudes brought on by wartime outcomes.

I am not explaining the underlying themes very well. I need to digest this movie intellectually. Watch it. I hope it moves you like it did, me. D

Lovely film but characters have eternal life?
belelsene2 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The mother was born during or before the war -because her father was killed during the Japanese occupation of Singapore That must have been during the 40s of the last century. Her Japanese husband was older. His parents are still alive (because they look after the dog when the protagonist leaves Japan) They must be 120 years old. The protagonist- who looks like a twenty-something- finds his uncle, who still has teenage children. But if this uncle (older brother of his mother) was born during the second world war he would be almost 80 by now. In the movie he is early middle age. You could consider the movie was set in the year 2000 but then the mobile phones and laptops do not match. Time to get the abacus out because this doesn't add up. I did enjoy watching it though.

A wonderful mix of food, love, family in this quiet and touching drama. Excellent acting and fine direction that touches your heart. You rarely go wrong with Japanese films.
