In 1989, Quincy Jones had already amassed one of the most enviable discographies in pop history, playing, writing, arranging, or producing for Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Lesley Gore, The Brothers Johnson, George Benson, Patti Austin, and Michael Jackson.
But the legendary polymath still had more to do — Jones set out to create an album that “represents everything I have worked for after 40 years,” according to The Billboard Book of Number One R&b Hits. That turned into Back on the Block, which spawned one of the last hits in Jones’ hit-filled...

Kane Brown has released the new song “For My Daughter,” a touching commentary on family and fatherhood. “I grew up without a dad,” Brown sings in his rich baritone during moving refrain, “I’m gonna be the best one I can be.”
“I wrote this song when I found out we were officially going to become parents,” says a statement the singer, who recently welcomed his first child, daughter Kingsley Rose Brown, with wife Katelyn. “I meant every word, and cannot wait to watch her grow up.”

Excitement is building for the January premiere of Star Trek: Picard, and we’ve already heard a lot about what to expect from the CBS All Access series. Over the weekend, the Destination Star Trek convention provided some reveals via Patrick Stewart, including new insights into the Borg and the return of some familiar characters. Another significant piece of news from the convention though was the first look at Picard’s admiral uniform, both through the prop and on the cover of Idw Publishing’s prequel comic series.
The cover image, which you can see below, shows Picard in the admiral uniform, suggesting that the three-issue prequel will fill in some of the gaps between Star Trek: Nemesis and the first episode of Star Trek: Picard. The cover was created by Sara Pitre-Durocher and was likely based off the actual uniform prop, which was on display during the UK convention.

“Old Town Road” is so much more than a hit at this point — it’s like centuries of American music were all building up to these 113 seconds of genius. Lil Nas X’s yeehaw manifesto has been the great national obsession ever since it blew up in March, which feels like years ago. But it shows no signs of fading. Fresh off his Billy Ray Cyrus remix, Nas just dropped another with Young Thug and country child star Mason Ramsey. He just announced he wants to do one with Dolly Parton and Megan Thee Stallion.

“This Is Us” has racked up 11 Primetime Emmy Award acting nominations for seven of its cast members. With both Sterling K. Brown and Chrissy Metz having reaped nominations, it may finally be time for Justin Hartley, who plays Kevin Pearson, to complete the Big Three’s Emmy sweep this year after he was criminally snubbed for his dynamite turn in the second season.
Last year, Hartley seemed to have all boxes checked off the snatch an Emmy bid for Best Drama Supporting Actor: the second season of “This Is Us” put Kevin through the wringer, as he mourned the death of his father in both past and present, triggering his descent into drug and alcohol addiction. The eighth episode, “Number One,” focusing almost entirely on his character, was tailor-made for Hartley’s potential Emmy submission: He delivers two powerful, emotionally draining speeches, is drowned in self-hate and regret, and is...

Here’s a good bit of trivia to test a true Star Trek fan: who’s the character who’s been part of the franchise for over 50+ years but doesn’t have a name? The answer is Number One, played by Majel Barrett in The Original Series pilot “The Cage” and portrayed by Rebecca Romijn in season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery.
After all these decades, though, Number One has finally received what she’s always been missing, as Discovery‘s recent finale at last gave us something to call her other than her official rank. Yes, Number One’s first name is actually Una, which is Swedish in origin, but also the feminine form of the Spanish word “uno,” meaning one.
Behind the scenes, the name was first used for the character in the novel Captain to Captain by Greg Cox. And on Twitter, fellow Trek author David Mack revealed...

The third season of “This is Us” concludes tonight with an episode by in-house director Ken Olin. Debuting with the first episode after the pilot, Olin has directed all of the season premieres and finales since, as well as such landmark installments as the WGA Award-nominated “The Car” and the consecutive “Number One,” “Number Two” and “Number Three” episodes.
Olin is profiled this month in Icg Magazine, revealing that the pilot script for “This is Us” was the best that he had seen since 2001’s “Alias,” another drama on which Olin was executive producer and the most-prolific director. Olin had since filled those same roles on “Brothers and Sisters,” on which he also acted; it was the similar tone and subject matter of this work that attracted creator Dan Fogelman to Olin. She’s been dubbed “the sweet lady with the nasty voice,” and anyone who has met her and had seen her perform live can appreciate the dichotomy of that statement. Wanda Jackson, the undisputed Queen of Rockabilly Music, bridged nascent rock & roll with traditional country in the Fifties, then proceeded to blow up that bridge with a one-of-a-kind voice like spring-loaded dynamite wrapped in sandpaper.
The 81-year-old Jackson, who recently announced her retirement from performing after more than 60 years, has had an ardent following not only in the U.S.

NBC’s “This Is Us” is filled with many great performances, so it’s no surprise that 11 of its 18 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, not to mention three wins, have been for acting. This year, yet another cast member, Susan Kelechi Watson, could reap an Emmy bid with a scene-stealing performance.
In the third season, fan favorite Beth Pearson (Watson) has gone from supporting her husband during his grueling city council campaign and unexpectedly losing her job to returning to her passion for dancing. All these storylines came together beautifully in the Beth-centric 13th episode, “Our Little Island Girl,” in which we see flashbacks of multiple phases of Beth’s childhood. We witness her struggle to juggle her mother’s (Phylicia Rashad) demands and home life with her desire of pursuing a path in dance.

Although Star Trek: Discovery Season 1 took us through the mycelial network and into the Mirror Universe, Season 2 has racked up the light-years in travel.
There was a dash into the Beta Quadrant to save an unknown human colony. Then a run-in with the sinister Section 31. And then trips to Kaminar, Vulcan, and, most recently, Talos IV.

While forging new adventures, this season has been firmly rooted in pre-Kirk Trek lore, introducing Captain Pike and searching for Spock. There seems to be an aim to reboot the nostalgia of the original series if that's even possible.
And they haven't forgotten about their adventures in Season 1. Both Ash Tyler (whoop-dee-doo) and Mu Georgiou (oooh... ahhh...) are deeply enmeshed in this endeavor.
Not only that but they've even tied into their series of mini-episodes, Short Treks, that aired during the hiatus.

The history of the Rebecca Romijn’s “new” Discovery character predates even Star Trek: The Original Series.
If Star Trek: Discovery is your introduction to the Star Trek franchise, the relevance of Number One (played by Rebecca Romijn in Discovery) beaming aboard the USS Discovery and slipping Captain Pike a digital note might have seemed confusing.

Mild spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, Episode 4, “An Obal for Charon.” Complete spoilers for the classic episodes “The Cage” and “The Menagerie.”

For at least a decade now, rap beats have been getting fiercer every year. The biggest producers in the genre largely abandoned traditional acoustic instrumentation, instead embracing the abrasive potential of software. As Kanye West worked on his 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, he kept a note on his wall reading, “No Acoustic Guitar In The Studio.” Producers like Lex Luger and Metro Boomin, who enjoyed dominant runs in the 2010s, took that approach to an extreme, constructing hulking beats that hit like jackhammers. Over a quarter-century into Andrea Bocelli’s career, the Italian opera singer finally notched his first Number One album as Si opened atop the Billboard 200.
Si, Bocelli’s 26th album on the Billboard 200, sold 126,000 total copies – including 123,000 traditional copies – to give classical music its first in a decade; Bocelli previously twice peaked at Number Two, Billboard reports, adding that Bocelli’s 20-year wait for a Number One album is second only to David Bowie’s 43-year wait.

The last time Old Dominion performed during the Cma Awards broadcast, they were relegated to an abbreviated performance of their Number One song “No Such Thing As a Broken Heart,” the lead single from their second album Happy Endings. But at the 2018 CMAs on November 14th, they’ll get the opportunity to stretch out: the band scored a coveted full-length performance slot for their hit “Hotel Key.”
“The performance is really the win for us,” says singer Matthew Ramsey. “We’ve done some stuff that was like half a song before,...

The USS Discovery will be getting a new captain in Star Trek: Discovery season 2. Following the shock betrayal of Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) in season 1 – he turned out to be an evil doppelgänger from the Mirror universe – Captain Christopher Pike is on loan from the Enterprise and will be taking command of the ship for a while to re-establish some sense of normalcy for the crew after their recent tribulations.
While speaking with IGN, star Sonequa Martin-Green talked about what Anson Mount’s character brings to the table in season 2. She revealed that the gang will definitely take to their new captain as he reminds them what it really means to be part of Starfleet as he’s such a noble, heroic fella and they know they can trust him.
“Well, I think that Burnham is ready to have a more Starfleet-like experience with a captain. We all have...

David Gordon Green on his lifelong passion for Halloween and why he only would make the movie if he could return to the source.
When I catch up with writer-director David Gordon Green, it is the day before Halloween’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. While he’d previously screened some sizzling footage of Michael Myers on a killing spree in Haddonfield (an artist in his element), in a matter of hours Green, writing partner Danny McBride, producer Jason Blum, and a number of the stars, including the scream queen, Jamie Lee Curtis, would reveal the whole movie to the world and press.
Of course now it all seems kismet with how well well-received this Halloween revival has been, from those early reviews to the deafening box office, but at the time Green was just even-keeled and happy to talk about Halloween like he would any other movie.

This year, Amy Shark’s album Love Monster went to Number One in her native Australia. But in the United States, the indie pop singer is still unknown, which makes her cover of Wheatus’ “Teenage Dirtbag” for the Spotify Singles series even more appropriately self-deprecating. And because it is her favorite song, you learn a lot about her past and present when she talks about it on the Under Cover podcast.

Season 1 of Star Trek: Discovery didn’t feature any of the franchise’s most iconic characters, but it did hint at some connections with them through Lieutenant Michael Burnham, who was revealed to be the hitherto-unknown adoptive human sister of Spock. Now, season 2’s going to bring the Vulcan on board the U.S.S. Discovery, with Ethan Peck set to be the third actor to play the Enterprise’s science officer.
He’ll soon be introduced to Trekkies as the fresh-faced Spock of CBS’ hit show and frankly, we couldn’t be more excited. The world-famous Vulcan is the kind of character who transcends Star Trek to become something else entirely – a legend – and it seems that season 2 of Discovery will tell us the unwritten chapter of his story.

While A Star Is Born may not have ruled the box office, its soundtrack has overtaken the Billboard 200. The companion album, composed of new songs by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, debuted at Number One with the best sales week for a soundtrack in 2018.
A Star Is Born sold 231,000 total copies in its week of release, including 162,000 traditional copies. That’s the best total for a soundtrack since Fifty Shades of Grey finished Number Two on the Billboard 200 back in February 2015, Billboard reports.

Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin united on Tuesday for a colorful live performance of their collaborative single “I Like It” during the American Music Awards.
The trio recruited a small live band and utilized an elaborate presentation for the trap-salsa track. Cardi B opened the song on a spinning platform, with a camera capturing her movements from an overhead angle. Dancers wheeled out Bad Bunny in a gold-tinted shopping cart, and J Balvin delivered his verse from on top of a massive stage prop.

Weezer covered Blink-182‘s “All the Small Things” during the band’s headlining set at Chicago’s Riot Fest, where Rivers Cuomo and company were filling in for the sidelined punk act.
Earlier this month, Blink-182 canceled their fall trek – including the Riot Fest gig – due to drummer Travis Barker’s medical issues. As Cuomo told the Riot Fest crowd, the band learned “All the Right Things” as a tribute to Blink-182, only to hear Young the Giant, who played before Weezer at the Chicago fest, cover the same punk-pop classic.

“Some years I’m the coolest thing that ever happened, and then the next year everyone’s so over me,” Cher told Rolling Stone in 1999. She had just released “Believe,” which set the record for longest gap between Number Ones on Billboard’s Hot 100, a milestone that stands to this day. She joins many other big names — from the Beach Boys to Aretha Franklin and Meat Loaf — on our list of artists who mixed up a cocktail of fortitude, talent and luck to fight their way back onto the charts...

Jake Owen makes like the king of downtown Nashville in the video for his latest single, “Down to the Honkytonk,” taking a boozy, good-timing tour of the city’s famous Lower Broadway bar scene.
Filled with pedal taverns, bachelorettes and plenty of colorful characters, the neon-lit clip pokes a little fun at the insanity of the strip, as Owen visits Broadway staples like Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge and Honk Tonk Central. Written by Rodney Clawson, Luke Laird and Shane McAnally, the song is all about how Owen might not go down in history,...
