Season 3 letdown ):
cherylkperkins15 May 2019
I just found Bong Appetite and I LOVED the first two seasons!!! I found them on April 20th on Vice and recorded set my DVR to record every episode. I have been enjoying these episodes SOOO much as my husband and I already love cooking shows! Now that I'm a new medical cannabis patient, I have been so excited about all of the education and how the show has been showing us almost step-by-step how to do things! And then on top of that, Abdullah is just charming and around the same age as my son, so he and the people he hosts are still relatively relatable to me. And then I started season 3... What a CRAZY LETDOWN!!! Not only is the comfortable house dinner party format gone, but so is Abdullah!!! Now the show is in some commercial industrial kitchen with chefs competing against each other. There is a host who wears sunglasses all the time so he is completely unapproachable, and the only one they kept is the girl who is even kinda not as warm as she used to be. The whole show feel is just not as warm and fun and relaxed and exciting...its just kinda common feeling. The last thing I need in my life is another cooking competition show..seriously, even if it does have weed in it. What were they thinking screwing with the format???

If you can't get Abdullah back, fine. But get a host that knows about weed, is friendly and a great laid back friend that I want to have dinner with and learn about weed and smoke with and relax with. This show was awesome to wind down to. Give us back our chill show please?

great show

Very informative! I don't indulge but this show certainly makes it appealing. The chefs are stellar, everything looks quite tasty and I love how they explain some of the science of the different varieties of the marijuana they use and how the flavors marry within the different dishes they prepare. Since many of us either don't indulge or live in states where pot is legal, you'll want to try these recipes anyway without the pot. Love this show!

Lots of potential, but a lack of format ruins it
scottkouta7 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
What I love about the show:
  • Vanessa's expertise in cooking and her interactions with the guest chefs are great.
  • Ry popping in with some science and a bit of advice for the chefs here and there.
  • They've done a great job at picking out some very interesting vendors, growers and innovators to make trips to.
  • The guest chefs seem to always be on board and excited to show their creations.

What doesn't work for me:
  • Abdullah seems to really want to turn this show into an ABC prime time reality show, and forces a lot of cringe antics into the show. How many times do you gotta day 'Bong Appetite' dude? It's the name of the show, we get it. He seems like a cool guy, but I'd like if the experts were the ones hosting the show.
  • The formatting issue of the show is that there's a lack of one, but I think that's because it's trying to combining two things and not doing it well. You've got your expert chefs in the kitchen, then you got your stoners in the other room waiting to eat, with Abdullah coming in to "check" on things now and again. This should be a cooking show, get those guest tasters in the kitchen! Let them watch what's going on and not be all high society about it.
  • The sob story stuff. I totally get it, it's a good thing to have in a show like this, so folks at home can relate to a character/person. I just think it's a part of reality TV that I'll never come to enjoy. There's a point in an episode where Vanessa mentions the first time she knew that she loved weed, that's the kind of light-hearted and fun backstory I like, something that doesn't drag me down.

So in short, and it seems mean to say, but removing the host of the show would greatly improve it. There's a lot of great stuff in the show, and I highly recommend it. But when watching it, think of how much better the show would be if you focused on the experts the whole time...

Cooking show with solid foundation in science
bella_demonia17 June 2017
Normally a big fan of cooking shows like Beat Bobby Flay and Iron Chef, I didn't expect the cooking in this show to be quite so inventive. Coupled with the cannabis expert who has a mountain of knowledge, I love this show!

Each episode is based in their kitchen, but with a new chef. It's based in LA due to the laws which I can understand. Best episode was the vegan one in my opinion - incredibly creative and chock full of a wealth of information.

Relaxing bit of TV

This would be a great cooking show even without the weed. All of the competitive cooking shows are ridiculous. Abdulah an his crew are easy going and knowledgeable about food and weed. So light a doob, chill and binge out on this great series.

Best cooking show ever.
hannahqualls23 November 2017
Even if you don't smoke or use weed, you can enjoy this show because of its clear message for the medicinal properties of marijuana and how the plant can be broken down and used in a seemingly endless amount of ways.

The food is always incredible and probably some of the best 3 course meals you will ever see on television. My favorites are the Thai food episode, the vegan episode and the pizza episode. Incredible chefs participate in this show and Vanessa cooks beautifully along with them.

Abdullah, the host, seems like a genuinely cool person who has connections with incredibly diverse people, which I appreciate. Ry the weed guy is well versed and helps explain any weed confusion, as there are many different forms of cannabis taking place in every episode.

Seasons 1 & 2 are the bong, I mean the bomb
jtai2118 July 2021
Seasons 1& 2 are by far the best cannabis related show compared to others.

Abdullah Saeed as host, and Ry Prichard as the cannabis expert, Vannessa Lavorato as the culinary person - the show is educational and fun to watch.

The guest chefs the show brings on each week puts out amazing food...makes you wish you could be a guest to not only eat the food, but to check out the cannabis pantry - amazing! The chefs impart education about their dishes, and Ry assists with which variation of canna that might work best for the particular dish - be it flower, terpene, honey, olive oil, CBD....whatever.

Season 3 is a let down since they chose to move to a cooking competition show. Not nearly as interesting or informative. I've watched season 1&2 many times, got through season 3 once, and that's it.

The first 2 seasons felt very approachable, comfortable, and fun. Go enjoy!!

Excellent show

Excellent show, except for hosts lack of vocabulary and a bit on the side of reinforcing some of the stigma attached to people who consume cannibis. Overall love every other person who's appeared on the show.

I don't write reviews often but this is worth it to share. This show is so amazing. Abdullah and his crew are so knowledgeable, hilarious, and creative! The cinematography of the intro as well is super cool. It's inspired me to create so many amazing recipes for introducing cannabis with food! It's also been a learning experience too, as they are very good at explaining about the effects of both CBD and THC and how it works with each dish. Anyways I could talk all day about this show, now you need to watch it! Can't wait for Season 3!!! Keep it coming!

Whoever Changed the Format Season 3 Killed This Show
stoneslade14 May 2021
LOVED the first couple seasons... but the season 3 change to just a cooking competition makes it just another Eh "reality" cooking show.

Also, I would personally like to see the top cannabis chefs over top chefs cooking with cannabis for the first time. I think it's important to have those professionals explain the journey they are taking the dinner party/audience on, and how they are able to control your canna buzz by switching back and forth between THC and CBD dishes. The loss of Abdullah as host and the format change killed a great show.

Cooking competitions?! Really?

The original show's format was wonderful! The new season's format is horrible!

First two seasons waaay better
demonviviri14 May 2020
Really disappointed with the newer format if the show. First two seasons felt like friends getting stoned together and was pretty heartwarming to watch. New season with the cook off just feels like every other cooking show. We already had a weed cook off series, didn't need another. I know the old host left the show, but why change the format?

What a waste....
matthijsalexander22 May 2017
Great concept, great ideas, great culinary show in absolutely the wrong format.

I was unable to watch a full show. I am not sure who these people are but they are simply not interesting.

My advise would be to cancel this show and make it a show presented by a chef that visits people. Not this bunch of good-for-nothing weirdo's with their fake accents and fake appearances.

I am not surprised at all that this show has ZERO reviews. There is simply nothing to say about this show. Hollow and shallow people engaged in something (for me as a Dutch) every-day normal and acting like its something special.

Great concept, crap execution. Off the watch-list!

A bit absurd, but fairly solid in the facts given.
rick-114820 November 2017
There is so much more that COULD have been done to make it more entertaining. The name of the show is a bit misleading as there's really no bongs involved....ie, smoking weed. But, it is very interesting how they are making the food with mj. I'd love to try some while watching the show - its been well over 20 years that I've contaminated my body with any drugs............
