What do you people base your reviews on?
alexm-3208615 January 2019
Why do Peoples reviews of film always bring up book versions? I've never read the book so I base this review strictly off Directing, Acting, Writing, Editing, Enjoyability .etc (which any review of any type of film should be based off) Now this wasn't perfect at all, but the pacing was phenomenal, the production values are very well done, acting was a little inconsistent which is usually for pilot episodes, the storytelling was straight to the point with no unnecessary plot fillers and the Editing was just as good as any other basic cable show i've seen. It just bugs me how a show like this gets hated on with a rating below a 7 but This Is Us is rated nearly a 9?? Anyway I liked this show sofar and can't wait till next week

My rating 8.5/10

Looking forward to the rest of the series

A great first episode. I read the book when it originally came out so can't really remember how true to it the series is so far, but it was an exciting and engaging hour. Very much looking forward to the next episodes.

My unbiased review, I have not read the books nor do I want to. A very promising start. Just what I'm looking for The hate comes from the book lovers.

Excited for this series.....

Absolutely amazing first episode. Stayed in line with the novel as much as possible. Adoring Mark Paul Gosselaar as Brad Wolgast. I'm excited for the next episode.

If you haven't read the books you will love this show. If you have read them don't judge the show. Yes they are name the same and stuff but it's two thing not one.

Hoping the story improves over the course of the series.

The Passage (3 out of 5 stars).

The first episode is a decent start to the series. Based on the first book of a trilogy which I did not read. Watching this series is coming from a new perspective. The plot is okay so far. A group of people came across a vampire like being in a cave. Then flashes forward, a secret government organization are experimenting on a deadly virus from the vampire being that can help cure all diseases. And they are seeking children that would be perfect test subjects.

The cast is decent with their performances. Mark-Paul Gosselaar was okay playing one of the government agents that tries to help one of the children's he captured Amy (Saniyya Sidney). Feels like the tone of the episode was all over the place. With the government doing secret experiments. Brad (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and Amy being on the run from the government.

The characters are written as one dimensional personality. So far it is difficult to even care for anyone in the show. The script is lacking substance with the characters, a bit of a better story, and the performances are decent.

Overall, it is a fair start of a series. A few set ups to were the story will be heading towards. The characters are just forgettable.

Nifty start to a very watchable action-adventure-horror-scifi-drama

Saniyya Sidney as young Amy turns in a terrific performance. As smart as the script needs her to be, capable of being by turns tough, terse, sad, quick, eloquent, or happy, with none of the overacting that tends to sink a child performer tasked with evincing real range.

A short review of Episode 1 of "The Passage" (2019)
ericrnolan30 January 2019
I'm all for a good vampire story. But this isn't a particularly good vampire story.

Or, at least not yet, it isn't. Don't get me wrong -- the premiere of "The Passage" wasn't the worst hour of television I've ever seen. I'd rate it a 5 out of 10 for being some what average. It has two good leads in Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Saniyya Sidney. Gosselaar is no Laurence Olivier, but he's good enough, and he looks and fits the part. He seems like an excellent physical actor in the premiere's brief action sequences, which weren't altogether bad. Sidney is downright terrific -- and she's an adorable kid too.

The show also has a great plot setup going for it, which I won't spoil here. It's based on a trilogy of dystopian horror novels by Justin Cronin, which actually sound like some quite interesting books. There are even a couple of sly references to well known horror films like "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (1992) and "28 Days Later" (2002).

Regrettably, however, "The Passage" suffers a lot from rushed and clumsy storytelling. The script is a poor one, with a lot of awkward exposition and forced emotion. (It shares a weakness with this year's vastly superior "Bird Box," in that it tries to fit too much of its source material into too little screen time.) It falls well short of being scary, too, which is probably what will alienate modern horror fans, unless it improves. (This is a primetime network TV show, and isn't any more frightening than the average episode of "Star Trek.")

Weird world -- Gosselar is none other than the Zack from "Saved By the Bell" (1989-1993). And am I the only one that thinks he is the spitting image of Chris Pratt in a lot of shots. I almost thought it was Pratt from the ads.

Why Mr. Cronin???
mdcagle45415 January 2019
The Passage is the first book in an amazing, epic trilogy. It's eloquently well written. I'm only 15 minutes into the first episode and NOTHING is correct or accurate. I can't believe Justin Cronin agreed to this garbage. I was worried from seening the initial previews but nothing could've prepared me for how bad this is. Did the writers/creators even read the book?!?! They completely change character's gender from book to series. They completely change characters occupation/interactions. I'm so mad. If you enjoyed the book, DO NOT watch this ahow.

Surprisingly dull pilot
Joe-9315 January 2019
I am a huge fan of Justin Cronin's "Passage" trilogy that forms the basis for this series and therefore was looking forward to it as soon I heard someone was making it. Based on the pilot, however, I wish they hadn't.

Cronin's books, especially the first, are amazingly rich narratives. He won prizes for his literary fiction before he stepped into genre work and The Passage succeeded both as literature and as a first-rate horror tale. The characters and world are vivid and compelling and Cronin does a masterful job of grounding us in the people who walk around in his fictional world. He does this in good part with extensive flashbacks that he weaves through the books, giving us bits and pieces until finally we see the entire picture of who these people are -- the heroes, the villains and even the monsters before they were monsters. He spends quite a bit of time letting us get to know Amy and even something about her mother...but in the pilot, since I guess the creators were so anxious to get to the monsters, all we get are small cliched bits that are clearly intended to make us feel sorry for Amy and therefore feel connected to her. In fact, the major flaw here is that the creators of the pilot attempt to convey in a few on-the-nose lines of dialogue what Cronin took pages to convey to us. I understand that TV is not literature and that the two media work differently and that the creators have to trim off bits and pieces here and there for the sake of efficiency and clarity...but they have cut off too much and so we never really get past the surface of the characters as props in an effort to bring us to the monsters as quickly as we can get there.

I will give this series another chance next week and will watch episode two but I suspect I will give us then and go back and re-read Cronin's original trilogy.

total let-down

Warning: Spoilers
I love MPG. But he could not keep a sinking ship from sinking. I don't know anything about the book. So I have no bias. I had open mind for this show as just a fan of MPG. Unfortunately, this pilot had sooo many holes. 1- We were introduced to too many characters. Not enough building for the main ones. 2- Brad has been ignoring his ex-wife for awhile and has no plans of getting back to her. Not too far from saying that he answers her next call and shes on the phone saying I know you lost a daughter but I want to have another one and the guy asked me to marry him. But at the same time she gives Brad an ultimatum, come home and I'll forget about the guy I literally just said I was going to marry a second ago. Are you kidding me with this crap? 3- Brad gets too attached too quickly to a strange 10-yr old kid who lost her mother not 3-days before him showing up. This would've been believable if they had done correctly with the writing and the directing. This is big part of the show is Brad taking this girl under his wing. But they did little to nothing to justify his actions. 4- Brad then decides he is going to go rogue and keep this one little 10-yr old safe. But, um, Brad you know they can just find another little 10-yr old right, The show has told us nothing that this one particular kid is special. The info I gathered is they need to test her for stuff or inject her with something. It all moved to fast to comprehend just what the hell is happening. I heard the word Vampire numerous times though. 5- Brad, while on the run, decides then you know what I don't wanna run anymore. Let's turn ourselves in. He tells her this option will keep her safe. Um, Brad are you stupid? He walks up to a cop and then next scene is him and her at the police station. He says "How's the paper work coming" ...wait a minute Brad, you thought that by turning yourself in that the kid will be put into the system that quickly? I can only imagine that was your plan was to get her name in the system. But, hey, shocking plot twist the department of defense called they want their kid back. What did you think was going to happen Brad? The writing is just horrible. 6- BOOM, Brad gets shot. Brad escapes with kid into a police cruiser. Um, was there no bad guys covering the front of the building? Geez people you gotta make crap more logical. Show ends with some talk in the cop car and the countless rear-view mirror checking. What happens next is not a mystery because the previews for the next episode(s) were on display with some crappy music that doesnt go with whatever this show is. And based on the previews they get captured apparently but would have been a good idea to end the pilot with them getting caught.so I dont find out on the previews. They all seem to be getting along too in the previews like he never went rogue or is not scared of what this place will do to the kid since thats the reason you went rogue. Just a horrible Pilot episode if i ever saw one. just horrible. But i am intrigued enough to tune into the second to see what happens.
