Great performances, deep emotion
brenswee17 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched a number of gay themed movies recently. Most have been devastating to watch - This is another one. I still loved the film though.

What makes it devastating is how real the performances are and where they lead. I watched these two guys create a bond, to the point where they just seemed to complete each other. They hold each other so tenderly, they're so at ease in each other's arms. The actors really did a great job and looked completely at ease with each other.

When the guys part ways for the first time during the movie, what they convey on their faces with just the flick of an eye or the breaking of a voice is brilliant - but that was nothing compared to their final scene. You could see "what could have been" and "what has been lost" all over their faces, and finally you could see their hearts breaking.

I immediately googled to see if there were any plans for a sequel. I would love to see a follow up, but in 'no-happy-ending' gay land, I imagine it's doubtful.

Good film - topical subject. An 18 rating is unjustified!
steveybabes19 July 2018
Very topical story of gay footballers (in the closet). Quite a gentle film rather than hard hitting. Beautiful cast, beautiful locations - are there no ordinary looking gay guys/footballers?!

One very simulated very shortsex scene (you really see nothing) doesn't warrant an 18 certificate which is really disappointing and cuts off an important potential younger audience from this film.

Bit of a cliched ending in my book - have seen this type of ending many times but as I said its not a hard hitting film.

Worth watching just because there has been nothing like this out there before around football

Wow...

Warning: Spoilers
What a really emotionally engrossing film. The chemistry between the lead actors is phenomenal and I found myself falling in love with them as they fell in love. The acting is superb. The only reason I'm not giving it a 10 star rating is because I'm so sick of all gay films ending in the same way. Let the film industry tell it, and there's no way gay people can actually be happy unless it's in a comedy filled with negative gay stereotypes and almost parodies actual relationships. This film deserved a better ending. Why couldn't he just look out into the crowd and see him there...I would've accepted that ending...not this one....ugh... Still worth a watch I guess.

From Teammates To Lovers
birkgez28 February 2019
WOW.... Watched Mario last night, and it was utterly bang on. 9 stars, and one of the best gay films I have ever seen. The acting was sublime, especially by the two leads, and much of the supporting cast were excellent also, and the direction was almost flawless. Others may disagree, but I thought the ending was realistic and very well handled given the context of the story. Similarities with the very excellent Free Fall. As a gay football fan, also enjoyed the setting and onfield action. However, totally baffled how Mario attracted an '18' rating. Bollocks to that. In my Top 5 all-time gay films.

I cried like a baby!

I so recommend this movie for anyone who craves good romance in films these days! Acting is great, the films is so engaging exciting but chill. I enjoed EVERY BIT, and felt all of the emotions both of the main characters felt. Quick tip, be ready to be on a slow emotional rollercoaster, and have some tissues around! Enjoy!

Mario's joy and pain
Gordon-119 September 2018
This film tells the story of two up and coming professional football players falling in love.

I loved this film because it tells a sweet romance, and also a very tough choice. The choice is very real because homophobia in professional sports is a well known phenomenon. Yet, it is a topic that is rarely touched upon in films. The actor playing Mario is a very good actor, because he displays emotions through his eyes, face and body. He convincingly tells his pain without the need for any words. "Mario" is an effective film that brings me to feel his joy and pain. I definitely recommend this film.

A perfectly pleasant film
euroGary30 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The titular character in Swiss film 'Mario' plays football in a second-string under-21 side, but the talented striker has hopes of hitting the big time. His ambitions take a knock when German player Leon (Aaron Altaras) is parachuted into the team. Although Leon is an obvious rival to Mario, the pair nonetheless become friendly, so it is no problem when the football club decides they should share accommodation. But in the forced intimacy of living together, one thing leads to another (c'mon, that's no spoiler!) and complications ensue.

On the face of it, there is nothing particularly new about this homosexual romance, but on closer look there are subtle novelties: the footballing setting, and the fact that when Mario's father expresses sweary disappointment at his son's man-on-man romance it is more in the context of how it will affect his prospects as a player rather than revulsion at a gay son: outside of the footballing world, the film's message seems to be, homosexuality is no longer a big deal. And the romance is not the only focus of the film, as we also follows Mario to Hamburg as he makes it into the big leagues - albeit with his female best friend in tow as 'WAG cover'.

The acting is variable. In the lead role, Max Hubacher is pleasingly low-key in his portrayal of Mario's confusion as to his feelings for Leon and whether he is gay or merely smitten with one particular man. But the script allows former child actor Altaras less scope to flex acting muscle beyond being happy, angry or sad, which is perhaps why he comes across as more of a soap star. In the supporting roles, I liked Andreas Matti as Mario's world-weary agent.

This is a perfectly pleasant film - albeit it one with not as much nudity as you might expect from something with so many scenes set in the changing rooms - "Footballers' Wives" did *that* much better...

Heavy
lucashuntington9 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is seriously heavy. Honestly, I wanted a different ending. I want the writers to go back and rewrite the ending. But it also sticks with you, in a gut-wrenching kinda way.

Very well acted and written. Now please make a sequel so we know everything is okay for the characters afterward.

A worthy addition to New Queer Cinema
MOscarbradley21 August 2019
"Mario" isn't the first film to tackle the subject of what it must be like to be gay and a professional footballer and while it's no classic, it is a vast improvement on "The Pass". Of course, it's also a love story and as such it's nicely done. Mario and Leon play for the same team as strikers; they also share a flat and they hit it off from the start. Actually, it's probably all a bit too convenient that they're gay and fancy the football shorts off each other and I'm sure it's no co-incidence that both Max Hubacher, (Mario) and Aaron Altaras, (Leon), were cast as much for their looks as their acting abilities.

However, where the film scores, (no pun intended), is in taking the whole issue of homosexuality in football seriously. Mario and Leon's sexuality gets out and has to be denied. The club, supposedly, is behind them, their fellow players make homophobic jibes, if it becomes public their careers would be over etc. It's an issue largely ignored in the cinema so it's good to see it being dealt with now. At two hours it's still a little on the long side but it's well written and directed and both leads are fine, particularly Hubacher who brings considerable depth to the part of Mario and who obviously has quite a future ahead of him. As an addition to New Queer Cinema it is also both bitter-sweet and prevalent.

This one swept me of my feet completely and why this movie needs a definite sequel
NDG198019 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I can't recall a movie in recent years that has swiped me of my feet so completely like Mario did. It's cute, heartwarming, emotional, cruel, sad and heartbreaking all together. The acting of all the actors is superb, but especially Max and Aaron. Their chemistry is wonderful and the way the story develops from a bit of rivalry to friendship to lovers is believable, heartwarming and spot on. My favourite scenes are the ones in the bus after the practice (the Amy Winehouse-talk), the fair (Mario giving that dolphin-key to Leon) and ofcourse that night-gaming session were Leon takes the risk of kissing Mario. But also the hesitation of Mario after that first kiss and then kissing Leon back a few days later after some private thinking is touching. The acting of the boys get's stronger and stronger in the second part of the movie were they both act differently on the situation of being pressured to keep their affair hidden in this nongay-friendly football world.Tears were in my eyes at that last few scènes.

I totally understand why Marcel Gisler made the choice to give this movie a sad ending, because it's a pretty accurate reflection of the current situation in modern football and being gay as a player. I also read he isn't a fan of a second movie. Nevertheless I hope he and the other writers and cast will consider doing a sequel of this story. Not because that Mario and Leon need to end up together at all cost (although that would be a nice side-effect) but mainly because this movie raised so much discussion in the press in a lot of countries about why active gay players still have trouble coming out in the current footballworld (the big leagues) and the sadness, depression and loneliness this players suffer being in the closet. It would be sad to let that momentum die now. Where the first movie adresses the problem, the sequel could be a guide for football clubs how they should come to terms with players that are gay and sees us Mario coming out after all (for example at St Pauli or being a Swiss national team-player) and choose for love and football with Leon at his side. So Mr Gisler, I hope you use your magic touch with this fantastic cast&crew for a second time.

Subverts Some Tired Tropes, While Perpetuating Others
jrmeretis29 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Great acting, great relationship development. My main conflict is with the ending. This is what I usually see in gay films:

1. Two guys have intimate relations. One man is very closeted, straight-identifying, and homophobic. While the other is more accepting of the idea of being gay

2. The more accepting guy starts to fall in love and wants more intimacy. While the homophobic guy feels shame and regret, and gets angry when the other guy pushes for more

3. They might mess around a few more times, but something comes to a head (usually someone finds out) and the homophobic guy freaks out and denounces their relationship

4. The homophobic guy moves on, dates a woman, basically continues his whole life living mostly contentedly as a "straight" man, completely leaving the other guy behind. The more accepting guy is left miserable, pining after the homophobic guy

"Mario" was a little different in that it flipped the narrative of point 4. Instead of the openly gay guy left pining after the homophobe who moves on to marry a woman, it's the homophobe whose left pining after the openly gay guy, who moved on with another man. So the message seemed to change from "it's miserable to be openly gay, the guy you fall in love with will be ashamed and leave you" to "it's miserable to be closeted, you're better off staying with the man who loves you instead of pretending to be straight"

So I liked that element of it. On the other hand, it did of course perpetuate the inevitable trope of gay men ending up miserable and not being able to have a happy ending.

New topic with a romance story -at least for me!
ilke_aydogmus6 March 2019
Story was smoothly flowing between 2 actors and made the audience believe in their feelings. But as a straight woman most important point for me was, in the mid of the movie, I paused and googled the gay football players in real life - that I have never thought about it before. This makes a change movie which deserves a sequel to offer people a second chance.

It would have been 10 stars except...
zobva13 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It would have been 10 stars, except the ending was maddening. It turned what could have been an absolutely wonderful love story between two men into yet another clichéd movie about a likeable gay couple separated by homophobia and the resultant emotional tragedy. The ending truly ruined the entire movie. I was angry at the filmmakers when I finished watching it. Would it kill these studios to give us a satisfying happy ending to a gay love story once in a while instead of building up the viewers only to crush us with negative societal stereotypes? I loved the first 90 minutes and was expecting the same type of happy ending that every heterosexual romantic film gives its protagonists. It left me with a bitter taste in my mouth and a little bit more cynical... not about society, but about filmmaking that seems to be stuck with the social mores of the 20th century.

As Authentic As It Gets
mrcoreyalejandro22 May 2020
The is one of the best gay films I've ever seen. As others have commented the acting is superb. So much is said by how the characters look at each other. The actors' character's actions and reactions to very real situations are so authentic, I had to remind myself I was watching a movie and not some witnessing some real-life drama. (I wish I knew these characters in real life.) If you're someone who loves a good (gay) love story, if you love a love story that spans the emotional gamut, if you're a hopeless romantic or a bit jaded you'll want to see this movie.

what new ?
Kirpianuscus4 July 2019
It is the first question. After so many films about same theme. At the first sigh, nothing. The clash between duty and love is familiar, the performances are good, the universe of soccer was used by the same genre. Special is the rhytm. The wise storytelling. The honesty giving a realistic portrait of a difficult, delicate, terrible, painful situation. And the feel to see something very personal. It is a film who has not status of pledge or manifesto but testimony. About pressure, career, fundamental options. A profound smart and moving film.

A captivating story about sport and sexuality.
eumesmozhoy6 November 2022
It's endearing when LGBTQIA+ stories are put in unusual situations. Football still has a troubled relationship with the presence of gay men, and Marcel Gisler takes advantage of this scenario to leave the obvious and show how intimacy builds passion.

A cute and sensitive film, but that doesn't hide the problems and intolerances that, until today, we face when we talk about sport and sexuality. Max Hubacher shines as the protagonist, delivering a mix of emotions that range from anger to an unmistakable tenderness in his eyes.

With some editing problems and small flaws in the dramatization of important scenes, the narrative loses strength at times, but nothing that photography (worthy of much recognition) can't get around.

In short, the film is a questioning of the consequences of embracing love and a protest against the taboos that still exist in the sports world.

Amazing film
hongkongfuey-440764 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Like many reviews say this is a truely brilliant film. The characters and storyline are very believable and the acting is superb. I'm sure it is very true to life for Professional gay footballers. The ending made me very sad and although I watched the film last night, I've spent a lot of time today wishing the ending had been different for the two main characters. The film has absorbed me and I can only hope for a sequel that gives a happy ending for Mario & Leon. Other reviews have suggested very suitable plot lines around how Mario could 'come out' as a gay professional footballer and with Leon's support demonstrate a clear path for others to follow. This will be a film I will watch again and again.

Brokeback Mountain in the world of soccer: excellent and painful!
johannes2000-15 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is basically a coming-out movie, with all the emotional hardships that go along with it. But here the original angle is in the context: this time not a high school or a stifling conservative or religious family, but the macho world of professional soccer-players.

Mario is a talented soccer-player at the brink of a major break-through towards premier-league football, when he meets Leon, a new team-mate. They fall in love but are forced by their management to hide their relationship out of fear for furious soccer-fans and sponsors retracting their investments. The result is somewhat like Brokeback Mountain: while Mario bends to the pressure and the fact that he has to hide his true feelings, Leon resists and tries in vain to persuade Mario to do the same, with predictable detrimental consequence.

The movie is very well made and the main characters are convincingly portrayed by Max Hubacher (Mario) and Aaron Altaras (Leon), who we even can see playing a fairly good game of soccer.

This is not a coming-out movie with a happy end, but I'm afraid it is all the more realistic. Since more or less 5 percent of the males are gay, it's a sure thing that among soccer players (like among everyone else) there's a substantial contingent of gay players, who even in this liberal and tolerant day and age cannot show their true colors, because in the world of male sports some weird traditional mass-machismo makes it impossible. It's such a sad, sad thing.

Oscar Worthy

Such an excellent movie with a touching story full of romantic feels and heartwhelming connections. The leads are great with outstanding realistic performances. The movie is very well made it really deserves an Oscar nomination for best Foreign Language film. I wouldn't call it a gay movie, I'd call it a movie for everyone who enjoys watching true love stories made in a nice professional way. Highly recommended.

Great movie, but....
jamisonjohn3 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Everything was planned out and executed perfectly by the writers, actors, and the director. Rich, engrossing story, spot on acting, pacing is great, but the ending is absolutely atrocious. There was ZERO closer. Things were sloppily explained away. I guess Mario is going to continue his life of silent misery, and Benzos. On the good side, this director should do mainstream films. I loved the tight shots, and the lighting; he has a real talent for movie making. I just wish he would have worked on this very unsatisfying ending. I wanted to rate 9 so badly. Remember, the ending, is EVERYTHING.

One of the VERY BEST gay movies
mickyalexandru10 June 2019
I saw this movie on TV, a year later after its production, through the the LGBT month here. Well, I watched it by chance. I am not a sportsman or football (soccer in Europe) fan. But, even though it moves slowly, the movie captivates from the beginning, thanks to very good acting. That's true that there are two main characters - protagonists, but all the artists LIVE their parts, not just playing. One has the feeling of being there and not just outside watching. Just touching ! Now, about the ending. For many, me included, it is not satisfying. We always want a Cinderella - style Happy Ending. BUT, is real life like this ? NO ! The subject, main subject, is the possible (or impossible) love between two football players and the reactions around them. Football is one of the most masculine sport around that attracts many women towards the players. So, why a homosexual love-affair ? And here is, the importance of this movie ! Everything is possible under the sun. The subject is attacked in the most realistic way. This IS life ! The players are very young men. Their mutual feelings are very strong. As long as there is no obstacle or danger. And here we have a real character development of both guys. This is the reality as it is and not as we want it to be. Leon - more romantic, Mario - more sportive and a bit more realistic. At their age, a lot can happen and this is the age that everything seems ....pink, but later it becomes more somber in shades. Both are in love with each other, but both of them are not ready to pay the same price for their "illicit" love in the eyes of the straight / sportive / competitive society. That's why it ends as it ends. Bitter-sweet? Sour? Disappointing ? Take it as you like, but this is LIFE and REALITY ! Not always sweet ! We, all, have Great Expectations, but life is not always supplying them ! Watch the movie, it's GREAT ! Don't let the EXPECTATIONS to defy you !

Great Film, so worth a watch!!
pates-288127 August 2019
Such a great film, really pulls on your heart strings! The actors are great and really portrayed how the football world is and how hard it must be, a real eye opener.

I was really invested in the relationship and won't lie, was heartbroken with the ending! I know why the writer probably wanted to end it that way, but I feel left on a ledge. I know not all stories have a happy endings, but I need closure lol please have a sequel so I don't lay in bed at night thinking about it and trying to work out what happens next.
