Antonio Fargas (“Starsky and Hutch”) and Stephanie Sigman (“Miss Bala”) have joined star Mike Colter in Tubi’s ‘Murder City,’ the second movie filmed under Village Roadshow Pictures’ Black Noir Cinema franchise, co-founded by NBA great Kevin Garnett.
Last December, Variety exclusively announced “Murder City” as one of the first films slated for Black Noir Cinema, a lineup of genre movies developed and produced by Village Roadshow and Tubi, which will exclusively debut on the Fox-owned free streaming platform.
Described as a “thrilling contemporary crime story,” the film follows Neil (Colter), a disgraced former cop, who after losing his job on the police force is forced to work with the city’s most notorious — and ruthless — kingpin, Ash (Sigman), to settle the debts of his estranged, deadbeat father, Graham (Fargas), and protect his wife and son.

When Village Roadshow CEO Steve Mosko first met with Kevin Garnett to discuss the basketball star’s pivot to the world of entertainment, the longtime film executive says it was immediately clear that the NBA champion’s Content Cartel production company wasn’t merely a vanity label.
“He just laid out how passionate he was about the business and building his company, and was beyond impressive,” Mosko tells Variety in a phone interview, recounting the lunch meeting. “I knew he just wasn’t another athlete who wanted a production shingle so he could tell his friends he has a production shingle.”
Beyond passion, Garnett came to the table with ideas. As the duo, who were introduced by Garnett’s “Uncut Gems” co-star Adam Sandler, discussed what they loved about cinema, the topic of Blaxploitation films came up.
“[Kevin] looked at me and — it was very heartfelt — he said, ‘Growing up as a kid,...

“System Crasher” star Helena Zengel was only nine years old when cast as wild and energetic Benni in Nora Fingscheidt’s film. And the young actress said the script, especially the heavy use of swear words, drew her to the difficult role.
“First of all, I normally can’t do those things, like say those words, so yeah, that was one reason. The other reason was I had very nice people around me,” Zengel told TheWrap at the Landmark screening of the film. “I was happy [Nora] trusted me that I can do this role and I liked the script very much. I read it every day with my mom and we talked about, okay, ‘do you think you can be you after that again?’ And we decided, yes.”
You’d think it’d be difficult for Fingscheidt to find her leading lady for a role that would be extremely daunting and exhausting for anyone,...

In the 2010s, the use of fourth-wall breaking narration has become ubiquitous. From “House of Cards” to “Fleabag” protagonists, speaking directly to the audience has become so popular that “Robot Chicken” has riffed on it. Now, “Wolkenbruch,” a Swiss romantic comedy now on Netflix, uses it to poke fun at a Jewish teen’s act of romantic rebellion.
Director Michael Steiner joined stars Joel Basman and Inge Maux at TheWrap’s Screening Series to discuss the new film, which has been selected as Switzerland’s entry into the Best International Film Oscar race. In the film, which has the full title “Wolkenbruch’s Wonderous Journey Into the Arms of a Shiksa,” Basman plays Motti Wolkenbruch, an awkward young Jew who is getting constantly set up for dates by his mother with women who, well, are practically clones of her. As he notes in a rapid-fire intro, the life of a...

Edward James Olmos has appeared in many films that explore what it means to be Mexican in America, but “Windows on the World” is one that he believes is truly special.
“I’ve done some really great pieces of story that I’ve had great passion for, and this is right there with him. I can’t believe that we got this on the screen.”
The famed actor spoke at TheWrap’s Screening Series alongside his son, Michael, who directed the movie, and screenwriter Robert Mailer Anderson. “Windows on the World” tells the story of America’s migrant workers through 9/11, as Olmos plays an aging Mexican named Balthazar who travels to New York and becomes an undocumented worker at the World Trade Center’s famed restaurant, Windows on the World. When the towers are destroyed, Balthazar’s son, Fernando (Ryan Guzman), follows in his father’s footsteps in order to...

Still here, post-Berlinale, seeing friends and catching up on some new trends…
I remarked in my last blog how noticeable the new young Chinese female entrepreneurs have been in my travels these last two months in Bangladsh, Rotterdam and Berlin.
Now I am discovering a new batch of Chinese video artists, many living and working in Berlin and all being shown in a new art gallery in the newest developing and very chi-chi area of Potsdammer Strasse (№ 87).
