It's a fun show
trimblecali4 June 2019
I haven't watched Black-ish but as a college student, I thought I might like Grown-ish. It's not very reflective of my own college experience but I do enjoy the show. The characters are likeable and I appreciate the way that each episode has a central theme.

Gets better with every episode
Elizabethchivers24 March 2018
I am a huge fan of Black-ish, which is what led me to give this show a chance. The first episode doesn't do it justice; you really need to hang in there a bit to start to care about the characters. This isn't a family show the way Black-ish is, but it deals with a lot of important issues dealt with in college and young adult life. I think it's wonderful there is a strong, real young woman who is the lead. She's not perfect, but why does she have to be? No one in life is perfect, and I appreciate the show making the lead character very relatable to young women dealing with a lot of the same issues.

Boring main character

I loved the show because of the side characters but i really can't stand the main character. She's selfish and a weird character to focus a whole series on.

REAL, REAL REAL

I grew up in the era of The Cosby Show and A Different World. This is NOT "A Different World." This is a show for young adults, not young kids. It doesn't hide the fact the drugs, promiscuity and binge drinking is rampant on college campus. It shows what happens when your precious darlings, who you think can do no wrong, do. I don't laugh out loud but I love the characters and how they deal with what college kids are facing today...truthfully, what they have been facing for the past 30 years minus social media.

An Easy Watch. Cute Show.
mekar-4937212 August 2019
Grown-ish is an easy watch with characters who are lovable. I see quite a few reviews regarding folks being upset about the drugs, sex, lies etc....it's college! I'd say most shows centered around a family eventually encounter these topics. Grown-ish does a good job of tying a lesson to each of them.

One thing I've noticed about the show is that it promotes accepting others regardless of differences ie. Democrats and Republicans. Additionally there are a lot of apologies amongst the friend groups- I think that in itself is the most important message.

Cute show.

Ignore the bad reviews, this is another brilliant show.
Matt-D-C22 February 2018
A very real, modern take on the college experience, this show follows Zoey Johnson as she discovers that life--and the real world--are much larger than what she was used to in high school and the Johnson household. The people that rated this badly seemed to expect a show about a girl going to college would only include classes and studying or something... but this is not that show.

This is a wonderful representation of what college students this day and age face. Yes it's more mature than Black-ish, but that's kind of the point. Just like the shock of going from PG Black-ish to PG13 Grown-ish, Zoey herself is immediately overwhelmed at how utterly different and unprepared she really is for everything. Grown-ish still has that Black-ish feel with the way topics are handled and the narration, but it's not a clone which makes it more of its own show which I guess the naysayers were expecting. Where Dre narrates in Black-ish, Zoey often speaks and confides in the camera. A familiar yet slightly different approach which I find to be a nice little touch. It's like her and the audience are going through this roller-coaster together.

The bottom line here is if you want a Black-ish clone with a 7th Heaven college experience, this show is not for you. But if you want a very real look at what Zoey Johnson would have to deal with as a freshman, then get that DVR ready. Because this show is every bit as brilliant as Black-ish and more.

Bad example of College
ResilientTrinity25 January 2020
This is definitely not like "A Different World". Instead, it feels like the writers did not attend college, they basically compiled the negative stereotypes college kids are labeled as & made a tv series about it. This show is shallow & basic. It's the show for college drop outs, the party kids really. "Dear White People" is a better representation & closer to the greatness of "A Different World".

I can't stand Zoey...
hallelujahtiktok17 September 2021
Listen, I like Yara Shahidi

But Zoey...

I don't know why the writers decided to make a main character that's so unlikeable.

She's self centered, bland, judgemental and almost NEVER faces the consequences of her actions. And even when she does get called out, her character barely develops, she cries a little then the problem is solved in the next episode.

Two episodes later she's created another mess that she and her entire friend group have to fix.

I LOVE THIS SHOW FOR MANY REASONS...
filmnoirthebest11 January 2018
I thought this show was very different, creative and depicted many shades and aspects of teens who are recently grown, on college campuses, NOT ALL! Grown-ish this is just a slice! I work with young people, and feel like this show is spot-on for many young people, and definitely not for some or adults who feel it either!

I thought it would be the usual college-life comedy, and was pleasantly surprised to see a show that shows that young people are thinking, and not just about their G.P.A., but life, mistakes, fitting-in with back-stories that flesh out the characters in 24 minutes, OK!

I'm always grateful when there isn't a laugh-track for starters, but I think it's a very fresh show, and hopefully, it continues to unfold and tackle hot topics, make people laugh and gain more viewers!

Not black-ish, but not supposed to be
JShaft3316 September 2018
First - I wish IMDB wouldn't allow people to review shows after having watched any less than 3 episodes. It takes many shows to hit their grove. Even the best shows from the past 30 years have had uninspiring pilots.

I like this show. I will admit that it can be lost on anyone who has not been in college within the past 20 years. It attempts to play off of issues many of millennials face such as social media and shallow dating scenes.

If you're watching this because you like black-ish, you may be disappointed. This show is not meant to be black-ish. It has some cameos but that's about it.

Boring rich girl problems
mmorgquinn23 January 2021
I can't relate to the main character at all, her personality is mad boring and she has the dumbest problems lol. It's a show based on third world problems. They barely talk about important issues and it's pretty vapid

Best young adult comedy on TV!
jmorris-703-39119115 June 2019
Other reviewers here diss it for featuring sex, alcohol, and pot. That's is a big reason why this show is so good. It doesn't look away from these realities. More realistic about college age adults than most movies. I sure faced all these things in college. Reviewers here that didn't...well nerds? I like it MUCH BETTER than "Black-ish" Clever, well written dialogue, uses up-to-date slang (but enough of 'fire' by now). Like-able characters that are given chances to grow with the show. A lot of the comedy is Yara's selfishness and cluelessness. Maybe over some people's heads. I'd only have at least some of them act and speak more like real college kids.

Not as good as the original
cewhitmer23 February 2020
This isn't a bad show per se, but let's highlight the utter "first world problems" that overload this show every single episode. It's disturbing to think that our next generation in America is so overcome by such stupid first world problems. Although some characters are likeable, it's hard to really appreciate the show when the lead character is constantly complaining about such trivialities. Got it, college age. But come on, can't this show take on some more of the meaningful conversations that the original takes on. Not that Black-ish doesn't occasionally get too focused on meaningless crap, it does have some great conversations on race and gender. This show does not. And as each episode unfolds, I like it less and less. I think they could focus more on better issues college age young adults face rather than social media and making drugs seem okay.

They should have made a spin-off on Junior the black nerd of the family,or on Diane the psycho of the family
Ashitaka1377 February 2019
Those kids in this show are pompous and entitled. They should have made a spin-off on Junior the black nerd of the family, or on Diane(maybe too young) the psycho of the family. Those would have been entertaining and funnier.

Wasted opportunity
kimsingjack5 January 2018
Highly disappointed,

Take a highly popular family show and spin off to a show about reckless sex, casual drug use, and excessive alcohol?

Seems like such a waste. Also ignores most black college experience does not focus in alcohol and drugs in the same way as white counterparts. I am old but also an ED doctor in area with many colleges. Black kids are still not getting end up in the ED drunk or high. It did not have to be "A Differrent World" but also show some responsibility to the main audience of. "Blackish". You can tackle difficult topics without making them seem the norm. While stimulant use is widespread it is quite overstated on this show. Please make adjustments to turn the show into a positive more accurate depiction off college life.

Nice Show but it's changing
truthnwosu20 May 2020
Well I've been with blackish while growing up, i live in Nigeria and read most of the stuffs happening overseas but im a movie lover, tv's and movies especially documentaries, to the point tho 👉 grownish started off superbly, but its gradually changing from the plot of college life to the city life and they're adding musicals, guest appearances of pop stars. its all good tho just that the show is devaiting from the plot that drew the audience in. I'd say the show needs new writers or a diff perspective. Thanks

Witty and Intelligent. A Different World 2.0.
payasoingenioso21 February 2020
All the characters at this point are so well developed, I forget it was Zoe's show. Completely forget. The dialogue is so intelligent and positive. The plots are realistic and very much grounded. I appreciate every moment of this show and how much it has grown. Black-ish is also impeccable, in my opinion. The modern day Cosby Show with the modern day A Different World.

Really good start for a spin off ,, but it needs more character.
Aktham_Tashtush4 January 2018
The show started really well, the factor of originality is well presented and for a high rated show like Blackish a spin off like this was always expected.

The plot is strong and presenting the contest of the episode has the taste of Blackish narrative style which is good and bad,, it is good in blackish because Anthony Anderson has his own style of attracting the audience , while here withYara Shahidi i did not really feel that urge, fun and excitement while she was narrating, but in all the show is good and has it's nice laughable moments, and I do believe the show will get good ratings.

As for the cast, first and last, Bravo.. a good choice casting Deon Cole to be part of this and i hope he stays in here because he is the part in which i said above "laughable moments", Yara Shahidi and Trevor Jackson we've seen them both in Blackish and they are so talented, and sure the others were okay, new faces to me so we still have to see how this will go on.

now the part were i said it needs more character,,. so usually spin-off shows "spin" around the original show for the first couple of episode, so it is natural, but after that the show needs to just separate itself and fly solo,,, here i believe the story is not about a "black" student but its about a student so distancing the plot from blackish's plot should be easy and hopefully instantaneous.

Finally, i'v heard the show got a really good impressions from the critics so fingers crossed it will go well ,, i mean we all root for fun and entertainment.

I never review unless it needs to be reviewed
jbelisario0010 January 2019
I don't even have words for how dumb the characters are. I'm the same age as the characters and I wanted to see a normal show with relatable issues. Everything is blown way the f out of proportion and us Millennials are portrayed as psychos. Its unbearable. -10 stars if I could. Hope it gets cancelled.

The Good and The bad
ainonieminen12 March 2018
The show was very promising with actors like Yara and Luca and it did succeed in a few episodes when it had the love triangle, but then it started to go downhill. Where did all the spice go? The viewers are waiting for it to get interesting again! Cmon bring the drama and the entertainment back!

Shows promise...But will it deliver?
milenacasciato5 January 2018
I found the first two episodes of Grown-ish to be highly watchable. I'm not sure it's a show that will sustain my interest enough to have me tune in every week. There wasn't much action but I suppose thats because a strong foundation needs to be established as well as character intros. However, I do appreciate how the show will clearly be tackling important issues relevant to its demographic and will certainly be relatable to young viewers. Initially, I wasn't sure if Yara Shahidi could carry her own show, and I'm still not convinced by her emotional range or comedic timing, but she's charming as Zoey. I do think the supporting cast is quite good. Overall, I'm hoping to see the show really impress me in the coming weeks, it definitely has the potential to do so.

Nothing like Black-ish.
tashalau27 February 2019
Started watching this show because I loveeee Black-ish! But this is nothing close. They should have given Junior the show and not Zoey. Yara has no personality, how did they even get a second season? So disappointing.. I really wanted to love it.

Grown-ish is amazing!
windischtamara22 September 2018
Grown-ish has something for everyone. It discusses political beliefs in a way, which is understandable for every group of people. It discusses racism, homophobia and discrimination. It is funny over all, but it isn't trying to be. The show reflects gollage in a pretty accurate way for the upper class, and you can look into the lifes of college athletes a little too. Money is only discussed once, and is making a little fun of it, but I don't think it does it in an offensive way. Over all this series is showing a way to find yourself in a way no series has ever done. That's MY opinion.

It's for teens
hwesz25 June 2022
While the best show, and it definitely has nothing on the original Black-ish, this is a show for older teens. The main themes in this show have "free form" written all over it and it seems as if a lot of these reviews aren't from the target audience. It's a coming of age show about a group of friends finding themselves in college. That being said, this show is incredibly political and most of the episodes are extremely, for lack of a better word, "woke". A group of culturally and sexually diverse friends go through typical college issues as well as dealing with race and politics. In the same way that a few of the original show "black-ish" were a bit much, this entire series is a bit much. I really enjoyed Zoe's character on the original show and I think she added a good deal to the family dynamic, however, in Grown-ish she is a very flat character without growth. As other reviewers have pointed out, the side characters are entertaining.

Not great, Not bad but unwatchable .
samuelbailey106 April 2019
I've read reviews of people claiming this is exactly how college life is, that's a boldface lie. Unless this is how you make it, this show is no way close to life unless you purposely go out your way. The show itself started off pretty enjoyable until I realized how unlikable the main character is. Like damn ,the world revolving around her seems so interesting and she seems so dull and plastic. Yara makes this show unwatchable ,her friends seem unrelistic asf but more interesting. If this show was more about the friends and I mean moreee about the friends I'd watch it. As of now everytime I hear the main character make everything about herself, I just can't do it.
