Founding member of the Smithsonian Channel and executive vice president of programming and production David Royle is departing the ViacomCBS-owned company in the new year.
Royle, who led the network’s team for 14 years, is “leaving to pursue new ventures,” according to a source familiar with the matter. He created and commissioned franchises including “Aerial America,” “America in Color,” “Cher’s Elephant Airlift,” as well as a number of programs commemorating Black history, including “Green Book: Guide to Freedom.” He also initiated the “living history” format with “Ultimate Viking.”
During Royle’s tenure, the Smithsonian Channel earned six Emmys, 31 Emmy nominations, Television Academy honors, a BAFTA and Peabody.
Deadline first reported news of his exit.
The move comes amid a broader restructuring at ViacomCBS and months after Smithsonian Network Tom Hayden left his post at the end of May. Smithsonian was one of the entities that experienced layoffs earlier...

Welcome to an April that’s sure to be unlike any other. Usually this time of year means getting outdoors in the nice weather or catching a baseball game or two. Obviously 2020 had different plans for us all. Now Amazon Prime has unveiled its new releases for April 2020 to give us an idea of what indoor entertainment options we have.
April 2020 is pretty thin on original series for Amazon Prime. Thankfully two of the few launches are big ones. Sci-fi anthology series Tales from the Loop launches on April 3 and looks to be quite bingeable. Amazon Prime is no stranger to sci-fi anthologies thanks to Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams but this one seems to kick it up a notch. Arriving on April 17 is the sixth season of Bosch as well.
April 1 sees the mass availability of a new crop of stock films for the service. Notable options include...

Smithsonian Networks is entering the booming subscription streaming space, announcing the launch of Smithsonian Channel Plus.
The ad-free, on-demand platform will cost $5 a month for access to more than a thousand hours of programming spanning history, air and space, nature and wildlife, science, travel and pop culture.
Smithsonian Channel Plus adds to the overall offerings affiliated with CBS Corp., which has rolled out CBS All Access and Showtime in the Svod space and an array of ad-supported services around sports, news and entertainment. Smithsonian Networks is a joint venture of CBS-owned Showtime and the Smithsonian Institution.
Competition has intensified for viewers’ streaming dollars, with more than 230 Svod services now operating in the U.S., according to a recent tally by Parks Associates. With downward pressure continuing on all networks’ linear ratings, most programmers have turned to streaming to replace lost affiliate and ad revenue.

Smithsonian Networks has expanded its push to reach cord-cutters with the launch of Smithsonian Channel Plus, promising subscribers 1,000-plus hours of streaming nonfiction programming for $5 per month.
The new subscription VOD service incorporates and supersedes Smithsonian Earth, the company’s $3.99-monthly Svod service that launched three years ago, which had been geared around nature and wildlife.
Smithsonian Channel Plus is a bigger play: It includes the same programming that has previously aired on the linear cable TV channel, as well as hundreds of hours of programming previously available on Smithsonian Earth. According to the company, existing Smithsonian Earth subscribers can access the new Svod service for no extra charge.
For Smithsonian Networks, which is a joint venture between CBS’s Showtime Networks and the Smithsonian Institution, it’s a move to boost revenue from over-the-top crowd — people who have canceled pay-tv service. Smithsonian Channel is currently distributed through partners including DirecTV,...
