Daniel Friend is the owner of a spiritual retreat in the island. He also turns out to be a man of mystery which DI Mooney uncovers with a history of breaking women's hearts. Right now he had to find his murderer.

Mooney finds that the guests at the retreat may had crossed paths with the victim some time before and reckons that this nearly was a perfectly planned murder.

Ardol O'Hanlon seems to have settled in well in this series and his character has to make a speech for Commissioner Patterson, who is due to receive an important civic award.

Death At A Meditation Retreat.

All the suspects had a motive to kill the owner of the retreat. And all the suspects had an iron-clad alibi. Or do they? And the secrets....

Another impossible murder solved
wjspears13 September 2021
While this show is mainly played for smiles--with laid back island characters, British inspectors who are always "fish out of water", male policemen dressed in starched short sleeve shirts and pants, while the only female detective walks around in sleeveless tops and shorts! I am not objecting, mind you, to how Detective Sergeant Florence Cassell (Josephine Jobert) dresses Simply commenting!

With that said, this show, week after week, gives us murders that are formulaic: four suspects, one of whom is the killer, with the solution revealed in the last five minutes with all the suspects rounded up.

The other part of the formula is what makes the show so enjoyable. The murders are almost always impossible affairs. The known suspects could not possibly have done the murder--even as one of the suspects is always guilty.

This week, for instance, the murder victim is killed by one of four people. All were in a meditating circle facing each other, for the half hour in which the murder was committed.

The solutions to the impossible murders are often brilliantly conceived--this week being no exception. When Detective Inspector Jack Mooney explained this week how the murder happened, I had to nod my head in appreciation to the writers' ingenuity.

Personally, of all the British/Irish inspectors on Death in Paradise so far, Jack Mooney (Ardal O'Hanlon) is my favorite. Mooney is quirky without being a caricature.

Like this series but this one was too obvious

Not one of the better episodes. Kinda obvious from the beginning who the murderer was. I guess just bad writing. Anyway, still a bit enjoyable and look forward to better episodes.

Meditation a remedy that works for phonys to brainwash people.
ctyankee131 January 2019
There is a mediation group on the island that do things together and take advice from the leaderand his wife. They use meditating and counseling with their followers. Daniel the leader gets killed early. His followers have secrets and reasons to kill Daniel. He gets his way and is a control freak. His wife has to do what he says and she is afraid of him. Meditation and Yoga is a religion.

Years ago I was involved in a mediation cult. I say cult because it gets people to believe in things by mediation a form of hypnotism. John the group leader told us it is for relaxation. He claimed it was not a religion. Class started with lights off in a room and him talking us down, telling us "you are laying on a beach relaxing in the sun etc. We started believing him as he planted things in our mind this in our minds. I did not like the feeling I felt it was like brainwashing. I stayed because there were people more educated then me and they make me feel welcome. I went to a church service and the priest sprinkled me with holy water. I do believe he sensed my spirit and it was not right. I prayed and got a confirmation that what I was feeling was not right in this class. I do believe in evil spirits when I would go home there were noises in rooms that never had they before. When I mediated my dog would run out of the room. I believe that is what the priest felt about me was my spirit. I approached John the healer I told him what he was doing is wrong. When he saw me the color ran out of him. I stayed for the last time with this group and during this class he looked right at me and said "I won't believe Jesus walked on water til I walk on water." meaning John. My feeligs were right about John. Jesus is God and walked on water and John was comparing himself to God. Just know that if something does not feel right it is not right.

I was once a "mucker"
jwbkatfish11 August 2018
This title first got my attention because it reminds me of an earlier episode! But "a mucker" was my not too glamourous job as a teenager in Half Moon Bay California cleaning stalls for polo ponies. Lots of horse droppings for everyone, enjoy!

Meditated in Murder

A good episode of the show, with lots of suspects being the likely murderer right up until the end.

As ever, I could do without the Dwayne subplot, which isn't very funny.

Not bad, but too silly.
Sleepin_Dragon9 February 2018
DI Mooney has to investigate when the leader of an exclusive spiritual retreat is murdered, logically one of the guests as the resort must be the killer. Meanwhile JP uses a self help book to gather evidence, Dwayne remains unconvinced.

I hate to say I thought this episode was poor, I've been complimentary of every episode in this season, but this one was lacking in that quality. The writing was a bit lazy, a theme that has been recycled and done to death, last week's was so original and fresh, this one felt tired. Why on Earth cast an actor like Richard Harrington, and give him no screen time? The same can be said for Sam Hoare and Katy Wix, none of the guest cast seemed to get any on screen time, it's baffling.

I didn't like the episode, but I thought Ardal was excellent, he's now settled so comfortably in the role, he's charismatic and amusing, he bounced very well off Don Warrington, Commissioner Patterson remains aloof. I thought Dwayne was shocking in this episode, it seemed a bit like he was sending the show up, it was a poor performance, I know the character is meant to be laid back, but come on, he was a clown the whole way through, that stupidity had also seeped into JP's character, how long before they're doing silly walks, we already have silly hats. Thank goodness for Florence, she was great.

A duff.

Very dull!

Warning: Spoilers
The seventh season of "Death in Paradise" just got on track with "Murder on the Day of the Dead" being a very good episode. It's sad to say, but "Meditated in Murder" is a complete opposite of the previous entry. It is not the worst episode of the series ( "Swimming in Murder" is a better contender for that), but comes close to being one.

Let's start with redeeming qualities, shall we?

. The production values are great as usual. The episode looks and sounds good. The acting's not too bad either. Ardal O'Hanlon is pretty good as Jack Mooney. He is likable and funny.

. There are moments of charm in this episode. Some jokes work and the solution to this mystery ( Gabe's the killer) was much better than the conclusion we got from "The Healer".

But....

. The murder mystery is a very generic one with actors like Richard Harrington and others, who get very little screen time here. The characters are boring with not much attention to them, the humor falls on its face for too many times. The subplot about Dwayne and JP was not funny and cringe-worthy at best. The dialogue is sometimes not good enough either. What's wrong with Dwayne Myers in this season? He has become quite an idiot to be honest.

Overall, a bland watch.

4/10 HK
