Meh!!
jcallender12120 January 2019
Very middle of the road, nothing really wrong to moan about, production, acting, creatures are all done well, the story is old but with a twist that I for one thought was quite original, but nothing catches your eye. I just thought there's something missing, like a cheese sandwich without the pickle. By all means give it a look just be warned it's much more VanDamme than Bruce Lee.

Still think we're the monsters?

Warning: Spoilers
A son is held for ransom until a couple can come up with $600,000. This was money a crooked cop got from the Russian mafia in Ireland. They scheme to hold another family hostage for 6 million dollars while the CEO banker takes the money out of the bank. If you read the DVD cover, you know the twist and more specifically what they are from the photo.

This is another home break-in with the tables turned genre. There are a ton of these, in fact, all of them are like that except some are better done than others. Two better ones that come to mind are "Wicked Lake" and "Perfect Host." For someone who watches a lot of horror films, you might want to downgrade this on your list. Nice to see Putin has put the Russians back in the films as the bad guys.

Guide: F-word, sex. No nudity.

Mediocre
The movie had some DECENT points but overall....meh. Whatever happened to the son? Saw him scream and that was it, did I blink too fast or something. The daughter and Sam.....that was me yelling the entire time, "STOP BEING STUPID!!!". The idea of the movie was different, I LOVED that aspect of it. I did laugh, TWICE. It was an okay film, but shouldn't be listed under horror, more like thriller.

It had potential
jhr201213 May 2019
What started out pretty decent, ended badly. For the first hour, this was pretty good; it had a lot of potential. But alas, the last half quickly became a low buget SyFy flick, complete with goofy costumes, poor dialog, and cheesy special effects. It's as if the director quit, and the replacement said 'to heck with this; lets just throw something together and go home'. Don't waste your time with this one folks.

Great potential, totally wasted.
Otte14 June 2020
It has a very very intriguing storyline, had the potential to be slightly fresh. But... 1. Great story, very poor writing...really poor writing/dialogue. 2. Protagonist is a sadder than sad actress. Even with son kidnapped her face never left the Kristen Stewart expressionless look. She said her lines like she was practicing in front of bathroom mirror...drunk. 3. Directing...well, they lost a character that was onscreen and disappears, like the director forgot the very important character was no longer in movie. That alone tells you about the direction.

Summary...Story was intriguing enough to see what happens in the end but execution was horrible.

Stay after the credits
terrylarosa4 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Decent thriller with a good twist about halfway through, though if you see the trailer then you'd already know. Some ok suspense and sorta likable characters to root for or at least good antagonists to root against. I noticed some dimwits here had no idea what happened to one of the characters. In this day and age; you need to be thorough and keep watching the after credits. You never know if there's something there. Definitely worth a watch.

SKIP IT unless you like rolling your eyes
maxxatotten21 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Really, I don't want to knock it too bad, but the writing is awful. There's so much of the writing to criticize, but it makes you hate the characters you're supposed to like. There's a lot of typical plot contrivances, pointless exposition to make it seem like there's detail. The 2 'likable' actors in this, they aren't the leads, and their death scenes are horribly written, so even their characters eventually become tragically ruined by the writers. They also exactly copied choreography from better movies action scenes. One to one on parts of the bar fight and final fight plus another couple moves exactly stolen from another movie. I literally watched a compilation of "modern brutal fight scenes" on YouTube and saw these moves before seeing this film. What's worse, is these are all contemporary films for the most part, it's not like they are revitalizing something from 20 years ago, no, just ripping off a couple other better movies. They took a cool concept and screwed it up with just bad bad bad writing. Now, see how much I'm complaining about the writing? Well, it's because I already looked past the special effects and bad acting. It's just eye rolling obnoxious characters not hitting marks with directors ripping stuff off and writers thinking their clever. I honestly feel bad for the cast. Lastly, it's way too long, it's twist was obviously coming, and it was just totally lame. Does the thing where it does a twist and rolls credits to heavy metal... that only works if the twist is fun, unexpected, interesting, or scary... it wasn't. It was a kid we already knew was evil picking up a phone, slowly turning around, and screaming, with no real consequence or weight on the plot. Could have been done better if he was used as more motive for the villain but no. See I thought about turning it off thinking, "Man, when you get more than half way through a bad movie and you figure just may as well finish it.".. then I check and see I'm just half way through the movie and I go "well, I guess that gives it time to do something unexpected." It doesn't, it just sucks throughout the whole thing. Eye rolling through and through. I gave a star for each of the two SOMEWHAT likable characters, I think mostly due to the actors, and an extra star for, idk, the charity of it, maybe the concept. If I took the time to give this a bad review, it's because I'm actually mad about it being disappointing.

Looks like these wannabe thieves picked the wrong family to mess with
Woodyanders25 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A motley assortment of people come together as unlikely accomplices in a bold plot to hold a wealthy banker and his family hostage as a means of acquiring a huge amount of cash. However, the rich family turn out to be something more than they appear to be.

Writers/directors Paul Bushe and Brian O'Neill offer a super cool and clever blend of horror and crime thriller elements, keep the absorbing story zipping along at a brisk pace, build plenty of tension, deliver a satisfying serving of splatter, and even toss in some kinky interspecies sex for spicy good measure. Moreover, Bushe and O'Neill deserve extra props for the underlying relevant message about how there is no such thing as a victimless crime.

The sound acting by the sturdy cast keeps this picture humming: Sue Walsh as the feisty Amanda, Jeff Doyle as the desperate Rick, Johnny Elliott as the scruffy Jack, Andrew Murray as the levelheaded Philip, Sam Lucas Smith as the eager Sam, Saoirse Long as brash teen Claire, Sinead O'Riodan as the composed Sarah, and Tom Naughten as little boy Carl. Both Jerome Leroy's rattling score and Philip Graham's crisp widescreen cinematography are up to par. A cracking good film.

Good ideas. Weak execution.
stoob0t20 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The actual premise here is a pretty solid foundation for a half-decent film... but it's not a new idea.

"Kidnappers/home invaders bite of more than they can chew" seems to have been a bit of a fad post-2010 in various shapes and forms, and delivered at varying levels of quality.

This one, sadly, has all of the same tropes that they all have;
  • One overly-aggressive member of the gang ruining everything.

  • One overly-soft member of the gang ruining everything.

  • Multiple overly-stupid and easily manipulated members of the gang ruining everything.

The quality of acting really varies. Not just from character to character but from scene to scene. The dialogue in the most part, is about as generic as it comes, and at times painfully corny. Every mistake the kidnappers make is eyerollingly predicable.

If you've watched ANY "home invasion with a twist" film that came out in the last 10 years, then this has very little to offer in terms of new ground.

With that said, if you want something leave on in the background while you fold laundry or knead bread dough or something, then you could definitely do worse.

Semi-decent hostage film overtaken by "Feh"
jmbovan-47-16017328 September 2020
So, one aspect, the hostage film, was heading to be okay. Characters were basic but some elements of caring. Then there were the continual stupid choices of the kidnappers, that lowered the focus of the film. Next, the film makers did a horrid job of hiding the twist element to the point that it would have worked better if it was more upfront blatant. Instead, there is this otherworldly element that is squeezed into the film, unsuccessfully for either aspect. And yes, as another review says, "Where's the little boy?"
