Fabrizio Guido (Good Burger 2), Toby Sandeman (Power Book III: Raising Kanan), Chet Hanks (Your Honor), Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Roberto Sanchez (Queen of the South) have joined the cast of Mindy Kaling’s Netflix series, set in the world of pro basketball, starring Kate Hudson.
In addition to Hudson, they join previously announced cast Brenda Song, Drew Tarver and Scott MacArthur.
In the as-yet untitled comedy series, when a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Hudson) is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job, especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports.

The Disney-backed “How to Be a Carioca,” from “Ice Age” creator Carlos Saldanha, and “Allende, the Thousand Days,” an adventurous Chilean-Spanish pick-up from Spanish pubcaster Rtve, will both world premiere at Iberscreenings, catching new evolution on the Spain-Portugal-Latin America TV scene.
A comedy, showrun by Saldanha, consolidating his exploration of live action after Netflix’s 2021 “Invisible City,” “Carioca,” whose first episode will be screened at I&pi, is produced by the Star Original Productions label, bowing soon on Star+ in Latin America and on the Walt Disney Company’s streaming services globally, such as Disney+ Spain.
An international co-production, “Allende, the Thousand Days” was originated by Chile’s Parox (“Invisible Heroes”), partnered by Spain’s Mediterráneo Media Entertainment and Argentina’s Aleph, Mente Colectiva and HD Argentina. A character focused chronicle of Allende’s three years in government before Pinochet’s 1973 military coup, the series has been acquired for broadcast by Chile’s Tvn,...

Stephen Amell may have shelved his bow and quiver, having retired from his Star City vigilantism on The CW’s Arrow this past January, but there’s plenty of hard-hitting small screen violence in his future when he headlines Starz’s professional wrestling series, Heels. Indeed, updates from the star—along with casting news—seem to indicate that said series is finally moving things along.
With Amell set to star as struggling wrestling promoter Jack Spade, who doubles as an in-ring competitor, the star clearly needs to maintain his famously impressive Arrow physical conditioning for the new series. Yet, the ubiquitous threat of the pandemic resulted in a lengthy stasis for the project, which Starz initially ordered to series back in August 2019—well before Arrow wrapped. However, the past few days have yielded welcome signs of life for Heels, starting with a tweet from Amell teasing Day 1 at the plot-pertinent...

Mary McCormack is returning to the small screen.
Starz today announced the beloved actress has been cast in the role of Willie in the series Heels.
McCormack’s character is the business partner of Jack Spade (played by Stephen Amell in the series) and logistical brains behind the local wrestling organization who came up in the glory days as Wild Bill’s (Chris Bauer) valet, but grew tired of babysitting and left him just as his career took off.
His return to the local circuit complicates her life, as does the reflection of her younger self that she sees in Crystal (Kelli Berglund).
McCormack is widely known for her four seasons as a regular cast member of The West Wing, as the lead of the critically acclaimed In Plain Sight and for her role opposite Howard Stern in Private Parts.

Arrow’s Stephen Amell trades the streets of Star City for the squared circle, headlining Starz’s wrestling drama series, titled Heels.
Heels is an inside jargon term within the professional wrestling industry referring to the role of villainous wrestlers, whose jobs are to generate “heat” amongst the audience, getting people behind the heroic “babyface” wrestler. Yet, it’s a concept to which Stephen Amell, the former heroic defender of Arrow’s Star City, will soon become associated, thanks to a Starz television series.
Starz gave an eight-episode order for an hourlong wrestling-centric drama, called Heels, back in August 2019, setting up the next television platform for Amell, who has completed a defining eight-season starring run on The CW’s Arrow, and has long been associated with wrestling, having participated in it sporadically, utilizing his now-legendary training.
Michael Waldron has written Heels, which will be directed by Peter Segal...

Cannes — The 2nd Canneseries festival ended Wednesday. Variety asks what this year’s second edition says about the current state of high-end drama series production.
1.Comedy Ruled, And Won
The 2nd Canneseries had no competition title with the profile of “Killing Eve,” its standout last year. A world premiere screened out of competition as the last series in the whole festival, where it met with some thunderous applause, “Years & Years,” a BBC-Canal Plus-HBO production showrun by U.K. industry heavyweight Russell T. Davies, does have that stature, and the potential to be one of the major drama series of 2019.
The Canneseries Competition ran a wide gamut – from genre (“Outbreak”) to drama (“Bauhaus”), drama-thrillers (“The Twelve”), near future low-fi (“The Feed”), dramedies and comedies, Canneseries artistic director Albin Levi pointed out.
As far as its competition goes, the festival’s major achievement this year was its bet on...
