Thinking this is the best show ever
ravenclaw_girlrules9 June 2020
This pilot was so mesmerizing. Everything about it is utterly beautiful: the cinematography, the culture, the time period, the world I knew nothing about...I've been captured. I was in tears by the ending and I'm not usually emotionally gripped by a show like that.

One of my favourite pilots ever

Warning: Spoilers
Every episode of Pose S1 shattered my heart, only to rebuild it. Especially the pilot is perfection in this aspect. When Damon was able to prove himself and do what he loves (thanks to Blanca my fav character in a show, maybe ever) and when Angel talked about wanting to be treated as a real normal women, I was MOVED.

This series is my absolute favourite!

Gripping, heart breaking and absolutely beautiful. The scenes are perfect with fashion and well selected music at its centre, each character has their own stand which make them all my favourite.

I only marked it down to 9 stars because it was a little choppy in the beginning and i felt the museum not pressing charges was a pretty big plothole

Pilot

Warning: Spoilers
Blanca after being diagnosed with HIV sets up her own House to get away from the overbearing Elektra, mother of the House of Abundance. The House is the alternative family structure in the gay and transsexual community.

Blanca's House is the new home for waifs and strays. One of them is 17 year-old aspiring dancer Damon. Once his god fearing parents find out he is gay, Damon is kicked out into the streets and sleeps on the park bench. Blanca becomes his mother.

The first episode of Pose, takes it queue from Vogueing and plants it firmly in the greed is good New York of 1987.

The coke snorting Wall Street types are contrasted with the colourful extravagance of the drag, gay and transgender community. Underneath the camp is sadness and pain, these people are outsiders. As Angel remarks she wants to care for someone and have someone care for her. Angel thinks Stan could be that man but he is married with kids.

The creators of Pose have taken liberties somewhat with maybe how homophobic society was back in the 1980s both in the USA and UK if you were gay, alternative or had HIV. Maybe this is deliberately glossed over, although you see Damon being kicked out of his house and Angel being turned down for a job. Pose does offer lots of glitz, glamour and pop music.

Poor acting, overwrought script
lets_play_two26 June 2022
I was very excited to watch this show but you'd better like your drama laid on buttercream thick. The acting is also distractingly weak in several scenes. Both of these demerits are on display in the scene with the dad yelling in the bedroom.

I'm bummed.
