Promising start to a strange and comedic superhero show
Holt34420 February 2019
I walked into this show completely blind only knowing Ellen Page and Tom Hopper is two of the leads, mostly because of Ellen Page though and seeing her in another superhero related movie/show put a smile on my face.

The introduction of the siblings were nicely edited, getting some details of who they are, in a comedic way. The ensemble cast was nicely picked, everyone feel different and unique. Every character is likeable but so far Vanya, Diego and number five is my favorites. Their superpowers were interesting and unique. The story seems really original and by the looks truthful to the graphic novels, they quickly set the tone of the show in a good way. Dialogue felt natural and the overall writing was great. The action Sequences were great, nicely edited and the visual effects was great. The show is so far really funny, natural humor, my kind.

Captivating

There's a lot going on in this first episode and it definitely has the hook. The characters had depth and the concepts were complex but somewhat understandable. Great cinematography and acting.

While not exactly perfect, We Only See Each Other at Weddings and Funerals sets up the characters and world-building really well Warning: Spoilers
While I'm not a huge fan of the comic book series this show is based on, I decided to give the show a shot today starting with this episode. The entire premise of a team of dysfunctional sibling superheroes trying to solve a mystery of their adopted father's death interested me and to my surprise, this episode is really good. Yes, the pacing felt pretty uneven, but everything else is done really well.

It sets up the characters and world-building by going into full details of who the Umbrella Academy team really is. Sort of like X-Men but in a more comedic way. Speaking of comedic, there are some funny moments particularly with Klaus played by Robert Sheehan (from Season of the Witch, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, and Mortal Engines) and those scenes with him alone make this episode worth it. Check them out. Anyway, the overall acting is really superb with some recognizable actors apart from Robert Sheehan including Ellen Page (from Juno) and Colm Feore (from House of Cards) giving the established characters unique personalities including Pogo, Vanya, Diego, Luther, and like I said before Klaus. The music score is really nice, the editing is great, and the CGI is used effective in some scenes. Plus some parts including "The Phantom of the Opera" violin version in the beginning is great to watch.

Overall, I wasn't expecting anything oscar-worthy, but this episode is really good start and to those who haven't seen it yet, check it out.

Wow
oliviag-452201 March 2019
This episode starts out with like a 7-minute long violin mashup of Phantom of the Opera music and I just about lost my GODDAMN mind. Seriously. What a badass montage, and a great start to the show.

I expected different
lukas-ingel24 April 2019
So glad I started watching this. When it first came out, I thought this would be a cheesy comedy with shallow characters with mediocre power sets and overrated CGI and music scores. But I saw a vid about the show today, which made me curious enough to click on this episode one. I'm so surprised. Not that everything was perfect, but wow! It's still so amazing. I can't believe there'd be this much tragedy and depth to the show. Knowing some of what happens too, I could see lots of hints about all kinds of things, which I truly appreciate. Great storytelling and a tribute to those, who like looking for clues. Will keep watching from now on! Thanks to the great start.

TV Magic
fenixlerner7 March 2019
I've read the reviews, I actually agree with the good and bad ones (especially the bad ones)... and...if you've read my reviews you know I'm tight with the star ratings....sometimes the storylines and plot are a little drawn out and impractical...and conversely rushed occasionally, and slow-paced at times......... Season 1 episode 1... I Think We're Alone Now! T.v. magic. Period. That scene alone earned 3 more stars from me and locked me into the characters' ...rhythm. When writing, editing, and acting (act((tors)(tresses)) deliver a moment of arguable perfection...it's magic! ummm...a not-too-complicated, fun series to watch (try not to focus too hard on the plotholes lol)...Hope there's a season 2!

Warning: Spoilers
For the beginning it is not stunning or amazing. Just ordinary. Super powered childs and their problematic past with their father. We don' t have enough information about them or their way or why they choice to leave. Only number 5, mother and Pogo takes attention.Starting session with Phantom of The Opera suit is the most stunning part of the session. We will see the rest:)

Soooo slow

Omg it's so slow, please get on with it. We dont need half an hour of melodramatic music to establish that the kids are sad....

I'm willing to watch episode 2 despite some obvious flaws
zeecool12 July 2020
Writing is the name of the game here. Some seriously on the nose dialogue coupled with terrible pacing makes this a tough watch. The concept and scene direction is good enough I will move on to the second episode but it was a close call. There is a good moment here and there. Overall I wouldn't call this a 5 for being "average" but more for being good with some serious drawbacks that force the rating down.

Nut an Integrated Whole...But
Hitchcoc19 September 2023
I finally took a chance on this. I had not a clue going in. So it's a superhero show. But then I came to realize that all the characters are part of a stable of unique types. They are children who were purchased from their mother after the women had a miraculous pregnancy. They are under the thumb of a controlling father who looks like part of World War 1 Germany. The children were once groomed to save lives (as we see in a flashback), but their humanity is pretty much ignored. They've have grown up hating their father. So now he has died and they are back together. This episode lets us know who they are and what some of their issues are. Also, their individual strengths and abilities. There is some good humor and a sort of pathos as well. After a rough and tumble beginning, it will be interesting to see how they plan to save earth.

Solid premiere, but...
xsargon12 March 2019
It was a solid beginning to a season, but the only thing that was getting on my nerves was the actor that played Klaus (Robert Sheehan). His character was unconvincing and a bit irksome at times. M

Good music
noalygh19 June 2019
The Umbrella Academy kicks off with an exhilarating montage, introducing the main characters. This is the perfect combination between meticulously picked music and scenes showing intriguing lives of the siblings, coming together at the Umbrella Academy to start the pilot. This is followed by an interesting first half with great conversations, making us wonder about the uncanny relationships between the siblings, with good chemistry and performance by the actors (except for Ellen Paige and Tom Hopper). But it only goes down from there. The last 30 minutes of the episode is just people fighting and dancing to music for no reason, with no story to it. Right to the end and I still have no idea what this series is about until the very last scene. The genre "adventure" for this show is a bit misleading since it lacks of any plot at all but only focus on music and fights. Now I realized it's just a dumb musical-superhero show with no substance at all.

This makes me sad.
mrcheminee21 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Not just the cliché after cliché in this pilot but the extremely high ratings as well.

There was literally nothing interesting happening in this episode. It starts with a decent adaption of the Phantom of the Opera song, introducing us to all the main characters, well... introducing.. more summarizing their main characteristic. One is the righteous smart one, the other one still a masked hero, there is a model, and an addict who is supposed to be the comic relief, oh yeah and the sensitive one, she plays the violin, Big surprise. Then they meet up because dad is dead and they don't really like each other. And the butler is a monkey. And then there is a dancing montage. And then Number Five returns because he is a time traveler and maybe dad was murdered. Nobody says anything of substance, it's all emotional blabbering and childish fighting. There are some fight scenes with real bad guys, but they are just so lame, think Nostalgia Critics description of the Inspector Gadget movie. Bad guy points gun. Kid with superpowers does something. Bad guy: 'Huh?' and dies. This is repeated many times, shot in dim light, with music that's just there to be funny. HAHAHA THIS MUSIC DOES NOT FIT! HA! "Is that blood?" "It's nothing" Great writing. Number Five from the future says there is no future and Ellen Paige offers him coffee, end of episode.

Do You Ever Remember A Time When Dad Wasn't Wearing His Monocle???
wandernn1-81-68327427 July 2020
+1 Star for the Opening Hook. Nothing like some Phantom Of the Opera done in a violin solo.

Had to look into this series as how could I not see something Ariadne is in.

Okay -1 Star for the Talking Monkey. Not a Fan. This a Planet of the Apes thing???

Okay the opening music was good, but really???

-1 Star for the weirdness of the adults dancing to the 'I think We're Alone Now' When I think of 'I think We're Alone Now' I want to think of DeNiro saying it in the re-make of Cape Fear.

+1 Star because I do absolutely love Daddy's House! It's not near as good as the mansion on House On Haunted Hill, but it does seem big enough to warrant some fun.

Haha, Ariadne is the 'ordinary' one??

Okay so overall a 5/10 for Ep1. Not really a big hook for me.

disappointing
no-futuree121 February 2019
The story is too shallow with too many gaps in it, wasting a lot of screen time on back stories which would later just prove how the story contradicts itself, it could have been a much better show if they did put some effort into it.

Doom Patrol
d.rust25 February 2019
Back in the 60s there was real comic book writing going on. Fast forward to 2019 and the writing SUCKS. And I mean BIG TIME. It is juvenile tripe that barely makes it past a thirteen year-old's understanding.

The exposition is inadequate. The characters are shallow and confusing; the only ones that are memorable are Pogo and Hargreeves, one is dead while the other isn't human.

There are around three shots that are worthwhile: one is the pram parade, the second is the cutaway academy shot, the third is the bank vault. The rest can be thrown together by second unit people.

I'm sure there are thousands of fanboys who are seething at my criticisms, but they should face up to the fact that DOOM PATROL is far superior.

Pay for a musician
bythesea-938102 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Considering Vanya, Elliot Page is playing the violin in the shadows why not pay an actual violinist instead of having them obviously pretend to and badly .

Unsettling start
Changomann3 May 2022
The premise of the series is interesting, raises a widely technological world and addresses in a curious way a plot of superheroes, has a somewhat slow development at times but although it is understandable generates doubts that are resolved in an interesting way, it is fun to watch and as the relationship between the brothers generates trapping moments and I find very interesting the use of music to set scenes.
