“How do I say this in a PG way?” asks Ncuti Gatwa, with a mischievous smile, ahead of the Los Angeles premiere of Doctor Who, which streams on Disney+ on May 10. Gatwa, who assumes command of the time and space-traveling Tardis as the Fifteenth Doctor, takes a pause before thoughtfully conveying his distinctive approach to expressive, headline-making style to The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m someone that very much wears my heart on my sleeve. My emotions are very clear for everyone to see, so I like pieces that have a mixture of strength and vulnerability,” says Gatwa, who stole scenes as a Ken in Barbie, as well as on the film’s London premiere red carpet stunting in custom Valentino silver sequin short-shorts, a billowing cut-out cape and jaunty cowboy hat. “I always like something a little sexy, sensual.”

No television franchise sees changes like Doctor Who, but high turnover can be overrated when you’ve built a world as rich as this one. Our first glimpse of Series 14 and the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) came at the end of the Christmas specials in 2023. Gatwa came out the gate blazing and established himself as a fun-loving doctor, breaking the mold in terms of performance and style for the iconic character. Of course, Gatwa has already broken barriers as the first black and openly queer Doctor. On top of his groundbreaking aspects, the pure energy and charisma Gatwa’s brought to the role already makes it feel like we’ve hit the jackpot.
Doctor Who Series 14 Plot
The new Doctor begins noticing strange accidents throughout London. As he investigates, he meets a young woman – Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson). Abandoned at a Church as a baby, Ruby wants to know about her birth parents.

Asexuality is rare enough on screen that a film that does acknowledge its existence can build an entire storyline out of it. But the scant few depictions of it in popular media that do exist — mostly in progressive teen shows like Netflix’s “Sex Education” or “Heartbreak High” — generally present storylines about the orientation in an instructive manner for general audiences. Their supporting asexual characters are typically young, confused teens, and their journeys to understand and accept their orientation are highlighted by arcs that pit them with love interests who struggle with the unconventional shape their relationship takes.
“Slow,” the second feature from Lithuanian director Marija Kavtaradzė, offers a somewhat different type of asexual character. Dovydas (Kęstutis Cicėnas) certainly talks about his difficulties coming to terms with his asexuality as a child, but when the audience first meets him he’s decidedly not an awkward teenager. Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa and W1A’s Hugh Skinner will star in a National Theatre revival of Oscar Wilde’s play about courtships, betrothals, and confused identities. The Importance of Being Earnest also stars three-time Olivier Award winner Sharon D. Clarke playing the imperious Lady Bracknell.
Director Max Webster, making his Nt debut, told Deadline exclusively that casting Gatwa and Skinner as the idle bachelors Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing -both leading double lives – who pursue two young women, both determined to marry someone called Ernest, and with Clarke as the dreadnaught dowager decreeing her own rules of class, taste, and propriety, was “a dream come true.”

Think about it: Can you name a recent series that gives off Dawson’s Creek, The O.C. or even Pretty Little Liars energy? Shows that offer incredible melodrama, characters you simultaneously love/can’t stand and baffling storytelling choices in a high school setting? Not considering the supernatural ones — if only because their scope tends to reach too far beyond high school — we can count this type of all-engrossing youth drama on one hand. The teen soap output from The CW, Freeform (née ABC Family) and MTV has become all but nonexistent.

“Doctor Who” and “Sex Education” star Ncuti Gatwa said in a recent interview with Attitude magazine that Black people have a pressure to be excellent that is disproportionate to white people, be it in Hollywood or other professions. The 31-year-old actor has noticed “white mediocrity” being celebrated, which is a luxury that does not exist for Black people since they must be “absolutely flawless” to even get a sliver of attention.
“We’re trained to be like, ‘If I’m not exceptional, I won’t be loved.’ Certainly, I think that was my thing,” Gatwa said. “So, yeah, I think I’m just learning now like, ‘You are allowed to be loved.’ You don’t have to be excellent or aspire to that term, ‘Black excellence.’ What the hell?”

Ncuti Gatwa, the first Black Doctor in the (very) long-running “Doctor Who” series, did not get here without a fight. Gatwa recalled to Attitude magazine how some viewers were “so angry” about his casting, “something so inconsequential.”
It’s actually quite consequential, but in a good way.
“We do see a shift happening in casting, in positions of power and in the status quo,” Gatwa said. “I mean, not a fast shift, things could tip over the other way a little bit quicker, but you see people kind of malfunctioning because things are changing.”
Things are changing for Gatwa personally as well. In his youth, the pressure he felt to “be excellent” was taxing — especially as “white mediocrity” was celebrated around him.

There’s a lot going on in the world of Alien at the moment. The original classic is returning to theaters, for starters, and the Xenomorphs will be fighting Marvel’s superheroes in the upcoming mashup comic Aliens vs. Avengers. Of course, the main event for 2024 is Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus, a brand new big screen movie set between Alien and Aliens!
With so much going on, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that Disney is also working on an “Alien” television series, in the works for FX from creator Noah Hawley (“Legion”).
The Alien franchise’s first ever television series is likely to arrive sometime in 2025, set to be the first story in the franchise that takes place on Earth, roughly 70 years in the future.
FX teases, “Expect a scary thrill ride set not too far in the future here on Earth.”
So what’s the latest on the “Alien” TV series?...

Among the lots up for grabs when the auction goes live on April 2 is the chance to have Swinton “read you a soothing bedtime story over Zoom,” a porridge masterclass with O’Connor who will “teach you how to make the perfect bowl” (and apparently get a glimpse of his secret porridge recipe), a chat about astrology with “Sex Education” star Wood, a “restorative drink” with “Saltburn’s” Oliver, and tickets to...

Sony Pictures Television’s President of International Production, Wayne Garvie, has said the scripted TV landscape in the post-peak TV era is like “going back to the future” — especially with his Netflix hits The Crown and Sex Education coming to an end.
During a keynote interview here at Series Mania in Lille, France, Garvie acknowledged that levels of global drama production had fallen, and that working with traditional networks and streamers on projects of all types would be critical going forwards.
He added: “The ecology of TV production is a very fragile thing,” and said: “The future is going to be more about collaboration,” but refuted the idea the market is depressed. “Everyone knows that not as much drama is being commissioned as was being commissioned, but more drama is being commissioned now than at most times in human history.”

The end of “peak TV” — the never-ending expansion in the number of drama series being produced worldwide — could be a good thing, according to Wayne Garvie, President of International Production at Sony Pictures Television (Spt).
Speaking at a keynote at TV festival Series Mania on Wednesday, Garvie noted that despite the sharp decline in commissions for scripted TV in the U.S., “more drama is being commissioned now than most times in human history” and argued that in the boom times, “a lot of stuff that got made that people didn’t get to see (or) didn’t know it was happening.”
The new, post-peak era Garvie described as going “back to the future,” with producers doing more shows with traditional free-to-air broadcasters that they sell to channels worldwide. “The Outrun,” the adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s deeply raw and lyrical 2016 memoir about addiction, recovery and nature, premiered in Sundance this year to stellar reviews, with many awards prophets already suggesting that the film could take Saoirse Ronan — who stars in and produces the film — back to the Oscars in 2025.

When Hannah Gadsby entered a deal at Netflix in 2022 with the goal of broadening “a notoriously transphobic industry,” they set plans for a multi-comic special featuring genderqueer comics from around the globe. Now titled “Gender Agenda,” that project will debut on March 5 with a lineup of seven performers.
With Gadsby as curator and host, “Gender Agenda” will give the stage to Jes Tom, Alok, Asha Ward, Chloe Petts, DeAnne Smith, Krishna Istha and Mx. Dahlia Belle.
Tom has written for Max’s “Our Flag Means Death” and recently wrapped the off-Broadway run of “Less Lonely,” their one-person show presented by Elliot Page. Alok headlined the NYC Comedy Festival in 2021, and has appeared in unscripted series such as Hulu’s “Planet Sex” with Cara Delevigne and Netflix’s “Getting Curious” with Jonathan Van Ness. Apple TV+ has launched the trailer for Noel Fielding-led comedy ‘The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin,’ which premieres globally on March 1st.
The six-episode Apple Original centres on Dick Turpin (Fielding), who sets out on a journey of wildly absurd escapades when he’s made the reluctant leader of a band of outlaws — and tasked with outwitting corrupt lawman and self-appointed thief-taker Jonathan Wilde (Hugh Bonneville).
In this irreverent retelling set in the 18th century, Turpin is the most famous but least likely of highway robbers, whose success is defined mostly by his charm, showmanship and great hair. Together with his gang of lovable rogues, Turpin rides the highs and lows of his new endeavours, including a brush with celebrity, all whilst trying to escape the clutches of the thief-taker.
Starring alongside Fielding in the ensemble cast are Ellie White (“The Windsors”), Marc Wootton (“High & Dry”), Duayne Boachie...
