Ed Westwick (“Gossip Girl”), John Hannah (“The Mummy”) and British newcomer Alanah Bloor are set to join Turkish lead Can Yaman in “Sandokan,” Lux Vide’s reboot of the cult Italian TV series about the adventures of its titular pirate who, with his motley crew, fights against colonial powers in Southeast Asia.
Shooting is set to start April 22 outside Rome on this high-end reboot of Italian writer Emilio Salgari’s exotic epic. The original “Sandokan,” directed in 1976 by Sergio Sollima, catapulted Indian actor Kabir Bedi to Bollywood stardom, having sold to more than 85 countries around the world.
Fremantle-owned Lux Vide’s new spin on the storied “Sandokan” IP is based on an idea by Lux Vide CEO Luca Bernabei developed for TV by Alessandro Sermoneta (“Devils”); Scott Rosenbaum (“The Shield”); Davide Lantieri (“Monterossi”) and directed by Jan Maria Michelini (“Devils”) and Nicola Abbatangelo (“Doc”).

The concept of body swapping is so fluid that it fits into every possible movie genre. It sounds ludicrous on paper, but you can’t ignore the pulpy charm of it. Director Kim Jae Hoon’s latest Korean thriller, Devils, plays the audience, or rather deceives them, thanks to their affinity for this particular concept. Body swapping is introduced as the primary tool to move the narrative forward until you get to the big reveal. How you perceive things after the reveal determines whether or not the movie works for you. I thought it was quite gimmicky. I am not saying the idea was bad, but the execution of it is hasty and bland. A little bit of polish in the screenplay and editing could have saved it by bringing much-needed flair, but sadly, things didn’t go that way.

The first trailer has been unveiled for “Walls” (“Mur”), actor-turned-filmmaker Kasia Smutniak’s directorial debut that will world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, leading to a mass exodus of refugees seeking asylum across Europe. Among the European countries offering aid and refuge, Poland was particularly generous but the country had also simultaneously commenced the construction of Europe’s most expensive wall along its entire border with Belarus to deter further refugees from entering.
A strip of land known as the red zone running parallel to the Belarusian border prevents anyone from approaching and seeing the construction of the wall. Smutniak undertakes an uncertain and risky journey into the red zone, where access is not allowed to the media, with the help of local activists and minimal technical equipment. The director’s journey begins and ends with two walls.

Kim Jae-Hoon's "Devils" is the psychologically twisted South Korean remix of "Freaky Friday" and "Face/Off." Throw some "Freaky" in there to hit on violent slasher elements where a killer has complete control of an innocent's body, because why not? The melting pot of subgenres plays sterner than Jae-Hoon's science-freaky, body-swapping premise might suggest, but that's not a missed opportunity. "Devils" is a slippery crime thriller that plugs surprises into an albeit ludicrous concept, and while the ending leaves a tad to be desired, it's still well worth the mind games and manipulation at stake.

It seems like the turn towards the crime thriller, which was actually one of the driving forces behind the current popularity Korean cinema enjoys, is back for good, as titles like “The Childe”, “Hopeless” etc eloquently highlight this year. Kim Jae-hoon also moves in the same direction for his feature debut, by coming up with a movie that channels John Woo's “Face Off” significantly, but definitely going much further.
Devils screened at Fantasia International Film Festival
Having lost his colleague who was also his brother-in-law to a serial murderer two years ago, homicide detective Jae-hwan is unable to contain his hatred toward the murderer and dives headfirst into hunting the brutal killer, in a way that blurs the lines of who is the criminal and who is the lawman. Eventually, he comes face to face with the murderer Jin-hyeok, actually getting him exactly where he wanted, but at that exact moment,...

As Fantasia 2023 continued into its second week I had the pleasure of seeing a variety of quite different and interesting films.
Two of them were 'body swap' films. In one of the films this swapping was intentional.
Devils
Devils is a crime thriller from South Korea that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat and will especially please those who like over-the-top ultra-violence. Yes, this is not a film for anyone with a weak stomach.
The story has a detective chasing a group of 4 serial killers who get together to torture and dismember their victims before posting videos of their kills on a snuff video site on the dark web. Detective Choi captures Cha, the rin...

Devils Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival
A volatile body-swap thriller full of twists and turns and spectacular action sequences, Devils was a hit with the audience at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival, and has firmly established its director, Kim Jae-hoon, as one to watch. It stars Oh Dae-hwan and Jang Dong-yoon as a cop and a serial killer involved in a complicated game of blackmail and betrayal as they try to track down mutual enemies, all the while seething at each other. Kim and I found a little time during the festival to talk about it – in a very careful way, because there are a lot of spoilers involved, but you won’t see them here. I began by asking him what led him to take on such a complicated narrative in his début feature.

On the occasion of “Devils” screening at Fantasia, Kim Jae-hoon talks to Panos Kotzathanasis about the inspiration behind the story and the influence of John Woo's “Face Off”, the biggest villain in the story, the casting and how difficult it was for the actors to portray dual roles, the action and violence in the film, the coloring and the lighting, and the state of the Korean movie industry at the moment.

Devils is director Kim Jae-hoon’s high concept, body swapping, ultra-violent, twist-upon-twist-y feature debut and it is a fun ride, but that may not be enough for some more discerning film fans. Buckets of blood and savage violence drench the film in a thick layer of gruesome glee, yet there are enough storytelling hiccups to make this film a somewhat hesitant recommendation for genre film fans. When a sinister quartet of dark web murderers commits a series of violent slayings in order to stream snuff to their online fans, it sends a team of homicide detectives into action. Leading the charge is Jae-hwan, whose brother-in-law was among the victims. The leader of the group, Jin-hyuk...

‘Lost’ Is Found
Specialty distributor, Trinity CineAsia is releasing China’s summer blockbuster “Lost in the Stars” in the U.K and Ireland on some 30 screens from Friday.
“I was fortunate to watch the film when it opened in China and once I saw it I just knew we had to have it,” said Cedric Behrel of Trinity CineAsia. “‘Lost In The Stars’ is a very clever, uncanny thrill of a ride that harks back to classic Hitchcock and any noteworthy thriller since – the master himself had in fact once optioned the rights to the same story. We organized the fastest turnaround premiere known to man and we’ve been delighted by the reactions to the early previews. It epitomizes the best of what new Chinese cinema can bring to audiences.”

It’s a wish-you-had-gills type of humid September day in Nashville, but Lucinda Williams is comfortably out of the soup, sitting at the kitchen table of Ray Kennedy’s Room & Board Studio telling tales about life on the road to a gang of touring lifers including Tommy Stinson and Jesse Malin. They’re rare, behind-the-curtain anecdotes, many of which she shares in her superb memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You. But in person, hearing them delivered in Williams’ syrupy Southern drawl, they’re especially captivating.

Desperate people do desperate things. This timeless fact of life is plain to see all throughout Beth Hanna and Jerren Lauder’s You’re Killing Me, a teen thriller invigorated by its own clever setup. While the execution may not go off without a hitch, the movie keeps the audience’s attention, due in large part to its sense of real-time urgency and engaging dilemma.
Going to college with her best friend is important to a scholarship kid like Eden (McKaley Miller). So much so she would ask her classmate Schroder (Brice Anthony Heller) for a big favor; she wants his father, a congressman, to write her a recommendation letter. This could be Eden’s only chance to get off the waitlist and into her dream school. In the meantime, a classmate of theirs has gone missing, but no one at school is so concerned that they would skip Schroder’s Angels and Devils party.

Andrea Scrosati, who is group COO and continental Europe CEO of Fremantle, isn’t too worried about various types of turbulence that are currently creating anxiety in the U.S. media market such as draconian cost cuts being made by juggernaut groups and the impending prospect of a Writers Guild of America strike.
Speaking in Italy at a film and TV conference organized by the Idm-Film Commission Südtirol titled “Less is More – What to Do When the Streaming Boom is Over” Scrosati noted that the effect of market consolidation in the U.S. and fear due to plunging stock market results that is prompting cost cuts at Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery certainly means that “some of the big buyers are in a conflict.”
Which, in turn, “makes it more complicated sometimes to have discussions.”
But, he said, “The amount of content that is required by consumers across the world is not going to change.

NBCUniversal Global Distributor has struck an old school multi-year content deal in Europe’s Baltic region.
NBCU’s sales arm has struck a wide-ranging set of agreements with TV3 Group for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This will encompass first-run and library films and scripted shows, animated series, Telemundo’s ‘Super Series’, TV movies and direct-to-vide films, and unscripted shows.
Studios output deals like this have become increasingly rare in the era of global streaming services and local original programs so the deal is a boon for NBCU. The Comcast-owned distributor has worked with TV3 in the past but the agreement is understood to be on a far greater scale.
Included in the agreement are the Jurassic, Bourne and Fast film franchises, animated films such as Abominable and Trolls; and other titles such as Belfast, Nope and BlacKkKlansman, plus current series La Brea, Chicago Fire, Law & Order, Young Rock and Devils,...

“Knowing that we did Dark, everyone can be assured that [1899] is going to be something weird and wild and crazy,” Friese promised Deadline about her and Odar’s new Netflix series. The writer-directors vowed not to repeat themselves with the new eight-episode period drama, but still to give their audience a fun puzzle that returns to the pair’s mystery roots.

Vanessa Emme has been cast opposite star Adrian Scarborough, with production now underway in and around London ahead of a 2023 return. BBC Studios-backed Expectation is the lead producer.
Emme will play Detective Sergeant Layla Walsh, who’s described as a “sharp, “diligent” officer who joins Chelsea Cid from Exeter and loves her job. While not naïve about life in London, she is billed as “an outsider and will occasionally roll her eyes at the worst excesses of Chelsea.”

CBS’ “FBI” viewers finally got to see the Season 4 finale that was pulled at the last minute earlier this year after a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Instead, it aired Tuesday night as Season 5’s third episode, and it seems audiences’ interests were piqued.
The episode involves the son of Jeremy Sisto’s character, Jubal, and his reluctance to provide information about a classmate with ties to a massive gun heist. It fared quite well and was by far the most-watched program of the night with a 0.6 rating among the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and 7 million total viewers at 8 p.m.
However, “FBI” was slightly edged out of the top demo ratings spot by NBC’s “The Voice,” which managed a 0.7 as viewers tuned in to see the coaches battle it out to finalize their teams during the last of the blind auditions.
