The CW has hired a head of unscripted programming — a position that could shape much of the network’s programming under new owner Nexstar.
Heather Olander will fill the newly created position at the broadcast network, reporting to Brad Schwartz, president of entertainment at The CW. She comes from NBCUniversal, where she was most recently executive vp alternative development and programming for USA, Syfy and Peacock.
Olander’s hiring is a key one for The CW, whose new majority owners have pledged to turn a profit by 2025. The network’s reliance on scripted shows filling most of its primetime hours is likely to shift — it may renew as few as three homegrown original dramas for the 2023-24 season (All American has already been picked up), leaving lots of space for unscripted fare and for Olander to put a stamp on the schedule.

Heather Olander has been named head of unscripted programming at the CW.
Olander will be responsible for overseeing development and production of alternative reality series, events and specials on behalf of the network. Her hiring signals the beginning of a major pivot at the CW, which previously focused largely on scripted programming but will have “minimal” carryover in its content by the 2023-2024 broadcast season under new majority owners Nexstar.
Olander joins the CW two years after her 2020 exit from NBCUniversal, where she worked for nearly a decade. She entered the company in 2011 as senior vice president of alternative development and programming for USA Network. She added Syfy to her purview in 2014. In 2019, she began running alternative development for Peacock in addition to her work with USA and Syfy, being promoted to executive vice president of alternative development and programming across the three brands.

It’s the end of an era. But is it the start of a new dawn? For 40 years, Vince McMahon reigned as the boss of World Wrestling Entertainment. Then, after The Wall Street Journal reported that he had sexual relationships with female employees and gave them millions in alleged hush money payments, he abruptly retired July 22 as chairman and CEO. The company now says it will revise past financial statements to account for 14.6 million in “unrecorded expenses” that have or will be made by McMahon from 2006 through 2022, with investigations also alluded to in filings.
The transition is leading some financial observers to bring up a question that’s been brewing for years: Could WWE now be sold by McMahon, its controlling shareholder? Loop Capital analyst Alan Gould is among those who see an increased chance of that happening. He upgraded WWE’s stock...

The current fourth season of USA Network’s The Sinner will be its last. The remaining three episodes will air Nov. 17 and Nov. 24, leading to an extended Season 4 — and series — finale on Dec. 1, which will wrap Det. Harry Ambrose’s (Bill Pullman) journey.
This marks another milestone in USA Network’s original programming evolution as UCP-produced The Sinner is the last remaining homegrown scripted series on the network.
The success of a string of scripted hits, including Monk, Burn Notice, Psych, Suits and Mr. Robot, helped NBCUniversal’s USA rank as No. 1 entertainment cable network for 14 years – the longest streak in TV history — in the 2000s and early 2010s.
But, as streaming’s ascend started to put a damp on linear ratings, it became increasingly challenging for premium scripted series to be sustained by the linear ad-supported cable business model. Like other basic cable networks, USA several of years ago...

As Nascar’s top-tier Cup Series is preparing to move to USA, the NBCUniversal network has greenlighted a companion eight-part docuseries about the elite drivers and teams competing in this year’s Nascar Cup Series Playoffs. It is set to premiere in 2022.
With the backdrop of the 2021 Nascar Cup Series Playoffs and Championship, Race for the Championship (working title) will take viewers inside the lives of Nascar’s top drivers and teams on and off the track.
Sports have emerged as a centerpiece of USA’s programming slate, especially after NBCUniversal’s decision to shut down Nbcsn, diverting the bulk of its sports packages to USA, including the Nascar Cup Series.
With Race for the Championship, USA is using the same programming strategy it has applied to its flagship WWE Raw franchise, which is joined on the schedule by hit docu-reality series Miz & Mrs. It follows the lives of...

Let's just say, Miz-stakes were made. In this exclusive sneak peek at tonight's Miz & Mrs. episode, Mike "The Miz" Mizanin and Maryse Mizanin entertain a country club's stakeholders at their estate—aptly dubbed Manor MarMiz. Of course with two toddlers in tow, nothing goes quite as planned. "Honestly it's going Ok. So far it's not a disaster," the WWE superstar says to the camera. "I don't know what I was worried about. Maybe it was all in my head." And then all of a sudden his daughter Monroe yells the F-word. "Fork. She said fork," The Miz tries playing it off. Yeah,...

There's nothing that happens in the Mizanin household that Maryse Mizanin doesn't know about. Even when Mike "The Miz" Mizanin thinks he's pulling a fast one on her, it's just not going to happen. He secretly decorated a "MizCave" during the April 12 episode of their USA Network reality show Miz & Mrs. He assumed that Maryse wouldn't find out about it (until the episode aired) since he was in a "hidden" room at their home. Nevertheless, she realized immediately. The mom of two told Daily Pop's Carissa Culiner, "It's my house. I'll figure it out pretty quick if you want to do something that you shouldn't be doing." Maryse isn't the only...

FilmLA said Wednesday that it has received more than 570 film permits for 422 film, TV and commercial projects since mid-June, when the City of Los Angeles and L.A. County got the Ok to begin the process of resuming film and TV production amid the coronavirus lockdown.
Still photography and commercials permits make up almost half of the incoming activity, with music videos (14%) and reality TV (8%) shoots also beginning to stir. A couple of feature films are also in this first mix: Michael Bay’s pandemic thriller Songbird, Ryan Murphy’s Netflix musical comedy The Prom and Anthony Nardolillo’s 7th & Union starring Omar Chaparro and Edy Ganem.
Unscripted projects on the list include USA Network’s Miz & Mrs., E!’s Botched and Fox’s The Masked Singer, which is hopeful to ramp up production to make it on the fall schedule. TV drama projects granted permits include FX’s Snowfall,...

USA Network has ordered a fourth season of its thriller limited drama series The Sinner, with Bill Pullman set to reprise his role as Detective Harry Ambrose. Additionally, the network has picked up two new unscripted series, Instant Family (working title), starring Nicole Walters and Josh Walters, and The Rev (working title), headlined by Pastor Richard Hartley. Both are in the unscripted family sitcom genre, which the network has been focusing on following the success of Chrisley Knows Best.
The renewal and new series pickups are part of the current programming shift at USA away from ongoing scripted series toward more live and unscripted programming, along with “eventized” scripted projects, largely limited/anthology series.
This is a programming strategy that has been gaining momentum among basic cable networks as it is becoming increasingly challenging for premium scripted series to be sustained by the linear ad-supported cable business model.

Two babies equals two times the craziness! Mike "The Miz" Mizanin and Maryse Mizanin stopped by Daily Pop Thursday to talk family, wrestling and the new season of their reality show Miz & Mrs. "It's a lot of fun," Mike said of season two, which premieres on USA Wednesday at 10 p.m. "She's pregnant the entire time. Extra, extra pregnant and then we have a toddler and she's running around and learning new words and it's absolutely insanity." The WWE stars welcomed their second child, daughter Madison, in September 2019. Maryse's mom Marjolaine also lives with them, adding to the chaos. "We have two moms, two cats, two dogs, two kids, us, a lot of...

Reigns will anchor SmackDown Live ahead of its launch on Fox in the fall ...
The annual WWE Superstar Shakeup took place this week on both Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live as WWE executed its post-WrestleMania roster shuffle.
The biggest news stemming from the shakeup is that Roman Reigns has been moved over to SmackDown Live. That's big news, but not a total surprise. Reigns will be anchoring a show that's headed to the Fox network in October and will air live on Friday nights. WWE needed its biggest name — which despite his detractors, is Reigns — on SmackDown heading into the network launch.
WWE did something similar with John Cena, when SmackDown moved to SyFy and then again with Cena when SmackDown debuted on USA Network.
Reigns has been receiving somewhat muted reactions since his return to leukemia treatment a few weeks before WrestleMania. That's usually a bad thing,...

USA Network has picked up a 20-episode second season of its hit unscripted series Miz & Mrs., from WWE and Bunim/Murray Productions, for premiere in 2020.
The network last summer had ordered an additional 14 episodes to air in 2019. The renewal is not a surprise, given how well the series has done. Miz & Mrs. was the network’s top unscripted launch in more than seven years, averaging 1.7 million viewers during the first three premiere episodes.
Miz & Mrs gives an exclusive glimpse into the A-List lifestyle of married WWE Superstars, The Miz and Maryse. After trading the Hollywood Hills for a quiet life in Austin, Texas, the power couple soon discover there’s nothing “quiet” about a life filled with two dogs, two cats, their adorable baby, Monroe, a crazy live-in mother-in-law and the demands of their high-octane careers. With new mom, Maryse, returning to the ring just months after giving birth and...

USA Network has confirmed its upcoming reboot of the 2001 reality series "Temptation Island." The 10-episode revival, produced by Banijay Studios North America, will premiere on January 15 with Mark L. Walberg, who hosted the original, returning as host.
"Temptation Island," which had been in the works at USA for the past few months, is part of the network’s aggressive expansion into unscripted series as it is preparing for the departure of WWE Smackdown next fall.
"Temptation Island" follows four dating couples at a pivotal time in their relationship, where they must mutually decide if they are ready to commit to one another for the rest of their lives — or should go their separate ways. Together, the couples travel to the tropical paradise of Maui, Hawaii, where they join 24 eligible men and women. There, they live the “single life,” in a test that is meant to help answer their most difficult questions about their relationship.

They're...awesome! Mike "The Miz" Mizanin and Maryse Ouellet are quite the WWE power couple, which is why it's basically a no-brainer that they should have their own show. Last week, Mike and Maryse's USA series Miz & Mrs. premiered and it brought in tons of ratings — so much that Miz & Mrs. became the most-watched reality TV show launch since 2011, according to The Wrap. Now, in an exclusive interview with Life & Style, Mike and Maryse are opening up about the show, its success, and what they hope fans will learn after taking a peek into their real lives. "Yeah, we’re really excited about that," Mike exclusively told Life & Style. "It’s pretty cool when you work really really hard on a show and everything kind of works in your favor and works out. That was pretty awesome. They told us what they were hoping for in the ratings...

USA Network’s newest unscripted series, “Miz & Mrs.,” just scored the cable channel’s top reality show debut since 2011’s “Tough Enough.” What do they both have in common? WWE Superstars.
“Miz & Mrs.” posted 1.5 million total viewers on Tuesday night, following weekly episodic WWE wrestling show “SmackDown Live.” That one is highly rated too, and it hauled in 2.3 million overall audience members from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. last night, providing an excellent launching pad for the Mizanins.
USA Network prefers to judge its shows based on Nielsen’s Live + 3 Day numbers, which counts 72 hours of delayed viewing. Expect the NBCUniversal cable channel to report an even-larger number for its newest debut in a handful of days.

The Miz is WWE’s best heel this side of Kevin Owens, and the “SmackDown Live” Superstar’s passionate promos have never been more personal.
In some cases, they’ve even been downright sweet — for a bad guy, at least. We suppose fatherhood will do that to a man.
Immediately after the late-March birth of his and wife Maryse’s (also a WWE Superstar) first baby, Miz weaved their newborn daughter’s real name into his in-ring microphone moments — over and over and over again.
While we had Mike Mizanin on the phone promoting his and Maryse’s upcoming USA Network reality series “Miz & Mrs.,” we asked the “Real World” alum what that constant repetition of “Monroe Sky” was all about — never too young to begin branding the next generation?
