Amphibia: Both Comedic and Deep
valen06026 May 2021
I honestly believe Disney has really stepped up its game on animated shows. With the studio coming up with amazing new stories revolving around fantasy-adventure, there just might be hope for them on TV yet! Some animated shows of theirs have come and gone either forgotten or left on a high note, but where Gravity Falls and Star Vs. The Forces of Evil left off? Amphibia is culturally inviting with both lighthearted moments and diversity addressed too.

Enter Anne Boonchuy (voiced by Brenda Song), a thirteen year old Thai-American teen from LA who is transported along with two of her friends Sasha and Marcy to a mysterious world called Amphibia. A place inhabited by anthropomorphic frogs and toads. There, she is separated from her human friends but makes new friends in ten-year-old frog Sprig and his family, little sister Polly and grandfather Hop Pop (Goofy's Bill Farmer) in their home of Wartwood.

Brenda Song is an interesting choice in voicing Anne following the end of her sitcom Suite Life On Deck as she now follows the trail left behind by fellow sitcom costar Ashley Tisdale in voice acting. Anne does give off a hint of London Tipton vibes in some situations, but is a character that is her own. Upon viewing a sneak peek at San Diego Comic-Con in 2018, I used to think from the beginning this show is played more on whimsical misadventures for laughs. However, I had no clue it would get serious with the lore and a sinister plot building up as time moved forward in each episode.

I recommend it for those wanting a fix in fantasy-adventure. I can tell creator Matt Braly wanted to express his cultural roots through a cartoon show, but he sure made a story that isn't limited to comedy alone. There's depth explored in each of these characters and with world building on each place Anne and her adoptive frog family come across.

Outstanding show, great effort from Disney
megevov3 January 2020
Where can I start, right off the bat the show portrays it's mysterious and delightful vibe. Characters are great and idea is quite interesting and amusing, following the adventures of teen girl Anne as she finds her place in the dangerous yet exciting world of Amphibia. Animation is colorful and attractive, with great character development. You can understand the characters and their personalities even from the first episode which is a hard feat difficult to accomplish. Can't wait for more seasons and episodes to come out.

You'll fall in love at first episode!

I've watched many cartoons now, but none of them have stole my heart as quickly as Amphibia! When I first heard of the show, I was a bit skeptical, but by the first episode, I could tell I would love it! The show does a great job of world building. Amphibia is both beautiful and extremely weird and dangerous and it's wonderful! In general, the setting and backgrounds are so well done and give the show a beautiful look. The characters and plot are great as well. Even from the first episode, you can tell how much the Plantar family and Anne care about each other. They each have a distinct personality and engaging dynamics with one another. The show also has a great plot with lots of promise. There is a lot of mystery that will make you want to keep watching, like how Anne will get home, what's the music box, and what happened to Anne's friends.

I love Anne-phibia!
adampkalb2 September 2019
I loved Star vs. the Forces of Evil, but then I really hated how it ended. Now I am glad we have this new show on Disney Channel to watch to fill in the hole! Because Ashley Tisdale from The Suite Life of Zack and Cody got to star in the animated Disney Channel series Phineas and Ferb, I'm glad that Brenda Song also got to have a turn with that a decade after The Suite Life of Zack and Cody ended. By an amazing coincidence, I noticed that this show started one day after the reboot of The Powerpuff Girls ended, and Amanda Leighton, the new actress for Blossom from that show, voices Polly in Amphibia. Clearly the only good thing about that reboot series was that it gave new voice actresses some experience for better parts in original series going forward.

Anne Boonchuy opens a strange treasure chest which takes her, Sasha and Marcy to Amphibia. She becomes friends with the Plantar family after Spring Plantar saves her from the other frogs of Wartwood. While helping the Plantar family deal with their everyday problems in Wartwood and going on strange adventures with them, she wants to find Sasha and Marcy. By the end of the first episode, we know where Sasha is, but we have yet to see Marcy by the end of Season 1. I am happy that Disney Channel gave Amphibia a second season before the first premiered because they don't want it to be another 1-season show-much like Dave the Barbarian or The Buzz on Maggie, especially because I am 100% sure we will find Marcy in Season 2. If there is a Season 3, they could finally figure out how Anne, Sasha and Marcy can leave Amphibia.

Gets so much better as it goes on!
killedgrilledandfried17 April 2022
Initially I was indifferent to this show because of it's seemingly episodic nature as I found those episodes to be forgettable and filler-y but as it went on, around the season 1 finale, it got so very good. When the show focuses on the overarching plot, it is probably one of the best shows out there and that's what we get as it progresses especially in seasons 2 and 3.

The characters are some of the most likable and fun along with a wonderfully intriguing plot. I loved seeing their dynamics develop and change over time. The only complaint I have with the show is that the occasional filler episode is not as good in quality as the story focused ones but that was more of a problem in season 1 and seems to be disappearing as we move along.

All this show has to do now is stick the landing and it can become a 10/10 pretty easily as season 3 is turning out to be the best so far and I hope for even better things to come. However, the threat of cancellation or being cut short always looms over shows these days so I'm going to stay cautiously optimistic for the future.

A perfect show that only gets better

Amphibia is an amazing show. It has great storytelling, humor to make you laugh each episode along with the likeable characters. The show feels one of a kind and has great music. The show steadily builds up so you can get a feel of the characters while introducing some mystery to keep interested. The season one finale was great and I look forward to seeing how they top it in season two's finale.

LOVE THIS AFTER THE VERY FIRST EPISODE!!!!
noahsmithmichael22 June 2019
If you're a fan of Gravity Falls and Star vs. the Forces of Evil, then you'll love this show. It has the humor of both shows, the mystery of Gravity Falls, the wonder of SVTFOE, but it's its own type of special. I definitely recommend fans to watch it and fall in love. If you're suffering from extreme Gravity Falls and SVTFOE withdrawal, then definitely watch this!!!!!

How to make amphibians entertaining
TheLittleSongbird7 March 2023
'Amphibia' was actually watched with high expectations. The Disney Channel has been in decline for years, ever since stopping airing the 80s-early 2000s Disney shows and dominated its scheduling with the Disney sitcoms (which varied in quality, mostly not great). It still had gems, 'Phineas and Ferb' was a big part of my late teens years and in recent years 'Gravity Falls' (their best in years) was an absolute gem and once it settled there was much to like about 'The Owl House' too.

Was actually intrigued as to how the show was going to make something entertaining, charming or adventure filled out of a world centered around amphibians, which usually do not appeal to me. Luckily, 'Amphibia' does that incredibly well. Absolutely loved the show throughout its duration, with the Season 2 finale being a highlight, and didn't think it was a slow starter (certainly not near as much as 'The Owl House' was) personally. Maybe not quite as good as 'Gravity Falls', but has pretty much everything that made that show so good and what made 'The Owl House' great when it got better.

Everything works. Really like the animation, which is very vibrant in colour (the colours literally popping out without being too dizzying) and rich in background detail. The character designs are also creative. The music is always dynamic with the action and full of energy and atmosphere. The theme tune is very catchy. The voice acting is excellent all round, so much life and enthusiasm from all. Brenda Song should continue going in this direction, she does voice acting really well and more than holds her own against the more experienced voice actors such as Bill Farmer (best known to me as the voice of Goofy).

Love the characters and right from the start like 'Gravity Falls'. Their character personalities were well established early on, as well as the relationships between the characters, and both grew as the show went on. All the characters were interesting and either lots of fun like Sprig or easy to relate like Anne, and never found them annoying or found myself frustrated by any behaviours or decision making (not the case with the early episodes of 'The Owl House'). A great job is done with fleshing out all the different relationships and character and situation conflicts. It was one of the best things about Season 1 and done even better in the second.

Furthermore, the writing is very funny and smart as well as rich in depth. The style of humour never came over as crude or childish, not quite the same as 'Gravity Falls' but is on that level of maturity, meaning that adults can enjoy the show as well while not being complicated for younger viewers. Can't fault the storytelling either, the mystery elements are always intriguing and suspenseful while never feeling predictable, the adventurous elements thrill, the nostalgic elements charm and loved the complexity and maturity of it. All the stories go at a good pace, especially in the even better second season, and avoid repetition, while also exploring very emotionally investable themes. So more depth than most shows today.

Personally didn't feel there was too much filler to begin with, and how brilliantly and remarkably quickly the characters are set up and developed more than made up for it. Even if structurally the stories were slight, there was a lot going on in the character moments, developments and relationships always.

Summing up, an absolute gem. 10/10.

One of the best shows out there, love every episode. Offers something fresh and new compared to the animated mature trash filling the markets today. Thank you Disney!

Little overrated but good enough.

Maybe I have higher standards because I don't know cartoons often but I don't think little kids are on IMDB so people who are giving this a 10 are a little overrating. It gets boring at points but overall it's good.

A solid show, worthy of Disney.
criteno28 August 2019
My opinion after the first season, for the record: This show has a lot of potential, and quite a few wonderful things about it. I really love the whole main cast; each character is quirky yet relatable. Hop-hops is a kind old grandpa figure, sprig bounces up and down like a maniac, Polly is sweet yet wants to smash all the grown people, and Anne... Anne is the glue that holds everything together, pulling the viewers feel into the world with her own delightful charisma. The world building is distinctive, the animation smooth and striking, and there are a couple of pretty solid minor characters who actually feel fleshed out. Oh, and there are some wonderful 4th wall breaks, too. However, I feel that sometimes the plot can be a bit too cut and dry, and I really think it'd be good if they went to having full 22 minute episodes so that they could swap between characters and really develop some nice arcs, sorta like Gravity Falls. That way, every episode wouldn't have to be episodic (like infinity train), and there could be room for more than one concurrent plot. All in all, I think it's a solid show that has buckets of potential, and I'm really curious to see where it'll go next.

Warning: Spoilers
I saw the first 2 episodes and thought wow this is great. I love the characters, I live the giant bug critters, the jokes are funny, the premise is good. But now I'm not so sure. The first episodes The origin and the pool episode are great. The Staff episode was absolutely horrible. 1) The jokes weren't funny 2) Bribing Polly with candy really you already did that joke, 3) The plot was way too basic oh no we broke the thing better go fix it 🙄 LAAAAAAAAAME, 4) Then there is bad attempts at black comedy. Instead of trying to do the darkest jokes you can get away with on a Disney show why don't you just be more clever with the gags as Dan Povimire once said *Working on Family Guy we learned that the easiest way to get a laugh is something really mean, really offensive, or really crass On a children's show you can't really do that and we want to entertain kids and adults so we have to work really hard to make the jokes smarter* 5) The show just started and I am already seeing a formula. Anne wants to do a thing she isn't supposed to she does it anyway and there is a third act monster like Regular Show. 6) I really hope it's not like Steven Universe where it is mostly mudane and cool stuff is rare. 7) The show seems like it is mostly going to focus on Anne and Sprig. Why is the baby just a comic relief she is the best charcater use her.

not worth the watch
sophierae79825 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm gonna be honest here: i started the series today and i didn't enjoy it at all. I found the characters to be boring and annoying, especially anne. I know she's 13 and teenagers are going to be like that, but she was too much for me. Hop pop is your typical grumpy old man which i didn't care for, and i didn't find sprig and polly to be anything exciting. I will say i don't like how doubtful hop pop is of sprig. I love brenda song too, who voices anne. I got bored of it very quickly and wasn't able to finish episode 5. There's no real plot either, and i kinda wish it started the way that owl house did instead of jumping right into everything. Not to mention the jokes and everything were cringe and everything felt too juvenile to me.
