The differences between Aino's and Micke's family customs become glaringly obvious on the day of Micke's parents' crayfish party. Just as the couple is leaving for the party, the doorbell rings and Aino's relatives arrive on a surprise visit. Micke is extremely annoyed by the tactlessness and silence of Aino's relatives. Aino defends her family even though she secretly agrees with Micke. At the crayfish party, it's Micke's relatives' turn to behave badly: Unlike Aino's relatives, Micke's relatives do talk a lot, but nobody wants to talk to Aino about anything other than superficial small talk. Aino and Micke's solidarity with each other and their families takes many turns throughout the day. When the evening ends with Micke's mother singing a really inappropriate song, Aino and Micke realize that their relatives are equally terrible, just in different ways.
