Poor Script and Distorted History
syedmuzammilseraj9 December 2019
Arjun Kapoor a very poor choice for this role on other hand sanjay Dutt was a good choice but director didn't make most from his character. Throughout fight Abdali force were being killed but at the end suddenly they won the battle. Direction and effects were not even upto the mark.

A bit inordinately long but sensible
wynwar17 February 2020
I'm surprised at the huge number of 1 star ratings. This movie definitely does not deserve that. It is a much more logically presented movie than the 6.5 rated useless Manikarnika. The movie doesn't have the entertaining kick that Bajirao Mastani had. It does feel more like a dramatised documentary.and is a bit slow. The acting is not as good as Bajirao Mastani either. But it is better than most of the recent historic movies and deserves better ratings.

War?? Where's the intensity?
sahilgill199 December 2019
Cringe-worthy!!! For 2 hours one has to wait for the epic battle which turns out to be non-enticing. I've no problem with the movie but they clearly failed to put the perspective of how prosper the Maratha empire was or the battle scenes which should give goosebumps. The director was pretty good in showing the war politics but it just simply lacks intensity. Sanjay Dutt is solely carrying this movie on his shoulders despite the above average enseble of actors. Puranjit provided good support.

Arjun kapoor really?
sagarbhalla-612446 December 2019
Ashutosh lost his mind when he hired arjun kapoor and housefull sanon for these characters, I don't understand how he who made lagaan and swades can screw it with caste so badly.

Great piece of work by Mr. Gowariker
mranalsingh6 December 2019
After watching the #Panipat Trailer, I thought it's gonna be a Disaster 👎🏻 But I was wrong, actually it's a "Decent Good Family Movie" 👍🏻Good to get a glimpse of our #History.. Periodic film like this should come more often. Thanks to #AshutoshGowariker who made this epic movie & he'll be the man behind the success of the movie.. he's very authentic. The film doesn't add too much masala. #Sets = beautiful Costumes by #NeetaLulla were simply fab #Warscenes 1st half was bit draggy bcz they focused mostly on romance. #SanjayDutt did an excellent job. Couldn't take my eyes of him #Arjunkapoor he did his best but its just that i m not very fond of him. I wish we had #HrithikRoshan instead of him. People have to understand that this film is about understanding our history and not abt some other entertainment. Pls Go & watch the film if u are History lover & #Gowariker fan like me 📽📹🎞

I will never understand how Arjun Kapoor gets movies... He can destroy a movie single-handedly with his boring expressions. Totally miscast.

Not as bad as the trolls would like you to believe
ragingbull_20058 March 2020
An Arjun Kapoor film that doesn't make you puke. Sounds like a rarity. Happens to be one.

The story is engaging but takes too long to get to the point. Comparison with _Bajirao Mastani_ is inevitable and this falls short on the entertainment front. However, the historical import of the tale kept me hooked for its longer than desired length of 160 odd minutes.

This might have done well at the box office if some other actor had been top billed. However, the fate was sealed as soon as Mr Kapoor was cast.

Kriti Sanon does justice to the limited screen time that she gets. Her expressive face effectively communicates the myriad emotions that her character feels and I ended up empathizing the most with her.

Sanju Baba is on a charas trip, as always, and barely bat an eyelid while maiming thousands. His expressionless might leave a stone ashamed.

Overall, it is slow to get into the groove but is consistently engaging when it gets there. Left me feeling infuriated about the betrayals that weakened India, three centuries ago.

Arjun Kapoor dosen't suck in this
magadalwarmayur6 December 2019
Don't go to the movie expecting bahubali because this movie is not bahubali . But nevertheless this was very informative movie. Ashutosh gowariker did good job. In acting Sanjay dutt stole the whole show. They tried to make us sympathetic towards antognist which I thought was was cheap trick but nevertheless it was good historical movies

just another propaganda to distort historical facts
nagumahwa8 December 2019
This was not expected from Mr. Ashutosh Gowarikar to distort the historical facts. Why is that so problematic to show the correct history? Why trying to give false narratives?

Felt like time travelling, such a beautiful film!
ojaswisrivastava16 January 2020
I don't know why it has so many bad reviews with such meaningless criticism, looks like people with agenda are just trying to troll and to bycott this movie (some reviews actually asked viewers to boycott this movie). Seeing such unfair criticism I had to make an imdb account to write my first review but the movie actually deserve a good review. So much detail and so much soul in the movie and the music. Far better than sanjay leela bansali films and tanhaji.

Sanjay dutt, kriti sanan, arjun kapoor, and all the other cast very equally fabulous. After ages I forgot that I was watching a movie with actors. Felt like I was time travelling. Such a beautiful experience. Thank you Ashutosh Gowariker Sir. We need more movie makers like you.

Better than over-rated historical flicks
npdeo186 December 2019
After a below average Mohenjo Daro. Bollywood's favorite historian, Ashutosh Gowarikar makes a good comeback with Panipat. Like his previous films he has given a detailed description of the events that were prevailing at its time. Small artistic liberties were taken to show Peshwas in a good light but still it was engaging to watch the film till the very end showing their valor in the battle despite their limited resources.. The action scenes though not on par with Hollywood films, were effective when compared to the over-top action scenes shown in films Manikarnika or Bajirao Mastani.

When the trailer was released many had compared it to Bajirao Mastani & Padmavat, but the similarity between Bajirao Mastani & Panipat was found because it was set in the same kingdom i.e. Marathas, due to this comparison between both these films was inevitable and its casting was heavily criticized.

Coming to its performance, Sanjay Dutt stands tall as a menacing Ahmad Shah Abdali and showcases the hawkish characteristics of the ruler (Considering his age i feel in the future he should act in more negative roles as he is more compelling in it and can fill out the void that was left with death of Amrish Puri) . Arjun Kapoor surprised me a fierce Sadashiv Bhau & has shunned all the comparison (with Ranveer Singh) & criticism that he faced when the trailer was released. Kriti Sanon was the surprise package of the film, her accent was good & made the most out of the role. Supporting cast comprising majority of Marathi actors made the most of it despite their limited screen presence.

Considering what happened after the battle, the director should have considered for a sequel but the nature of incidents that occurred after the battle and the film's financial implication will not make it happen.

Gowarikar's next attempt to twist history That's why I hate bollywood historical movies. The movie is trying to justify Maratha's defeat.

EPIC

#FinalVerdict

Everything about Panipat is colossal - the scale on which it has been mounted, the passion which director Ashutosh Gowariker has poured into every frame, the startling beauty of its leads and the daunting run time of almost 3 hours.

Director Ashutosh Gowariker was determined to make a film on the lives of Sadashivrao Bhau, Parvati Bai and Ahmad Shah Abdali for quite some time. He waited for the opportune time to commence Panipat and the outcome is not just body beautiful, but there's soul as well.

Panipat is director Ashutosh Gowariker's most ambitious project to date. It requires firm belief in the subject, prowess, courage, aptitude, patience, passion, knowledge and budget to attempt a movie like this to satiate the appetite of millions of moviegoers. He is not a timid director. He finds no satisfaction in creating the generic instantly disposable Hindi film. He dreams big and goes where other filmmakers fear to tread. He recreates the bygone era in Panipat convincingly, besides extensive detailing.

To suit the tastes of the present-day spectators and make Panipat more palatable, Ashutosh Gowariker successfully makes the characters come alive to the present-day generation. What comes across on screen is enthralling, truly informative and exceptionally inspiring.

Ashutosh Gowariker and his team of writers introduce the on-screen characters & the sequence of events with utmost simplicity so that the spectator is able to get the grip of the goings-on with ease. Also, the dialogue (Ashok Chakradhar) is easy to decipher.

The love story, the conflict, the dramatic altercations, the battle sequences and of course, the ostentatious setting... Panipat is an enthralling period film, made with a genuinely honest effort, that deserves applause and encouragement from cineastes. Kudos!

Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon have enough electricity to light up the vast sets & eye-filling production design that Nitin Chandrakant Desai has so painstakingly created in Panipat. The battle sequences (Abbas Ali Moghul) are awe-inspiring & have been executed with magnificence.

When you think of the gigantic scale of Panipat, clearly, director Ashutosh Gowariker has left no stone unturned in depicting an epic tale that does absolute justice to the event. The apparel (Neeta Lulla), as well as the styling of the characters, is truly majestic.

Ajay-Atul's music and background score seamlessly weave in the narration. The songs are mesmeric and well-choreographed. Panipat is gorgeously lensed, with cinematographer (Muraleedharan C.K.) capturing the colours, setting and emotions meticulously.

Lengthy run time (2.54 hours) and lethargic pacing are two major hiccups of Panipat, besides patchy first half with so many characters the film touches upon. The editor (Steven Bernard) could've easily trimmed a few plot points to make the goings-on crisper.

Panipat also works because of Rohan Mapuskar's perfect casting. Arjun Kapoor embodies the great emperor without ever becoming theatrical. The rebelliousness & boisterousness are depicted to perfection. Watch out for him in the final goosebumps-inducing war sequence.

Kriti Sanon looks more beautiful in Panipat than she has in any of her recent films. Her eyes flash fire. A flawless performance indeed! Sanjay Dutt's towering presence adds a lot of weight to his character. He could just become the new face of menace.

Panipat has a host of characters, but the ones you carry home, besides Arjun and Sanjay Dutt, are Mohnish Bahl (excellent), Padmini Kolhapure (fantastic), Sahil Salathia (electrifying), Mantra (perfect), Zeenat Aman (graceful) and Suhasini Mulay (effective).

Final words: Fit Panipat into your agenda of films to watch this weekend. Witness the unshakeable bravery, courage and the strong principles of the Marathas that will leave you spellbound, enthralled, entranced and awestruck. Very strongly recommended!

Authenticity turned into patriotic fiction
kluseba17 December 2019
Panipat is a historical Indian war movie that revisits the battle between the Marathas from the south and the Afghans from the north in the eighteenth century. The movie follows commander-in-chief Sadashivrao Bhau as he comes home from battle, is appointed as Minister of Finances, gets married, prepares for the decisive battle with the Afghans invaders and creates multiple alliances throughout Hindostan.

The movie convinces with a precise story that focuses on economical, political and social aspects of war. The characters have depth, the dialogues are sharp and the detailed precision brings life in Hindostan throughout the eighteenth century to life in authentic fashion. The highlight of the movie is nevertheless the epic battle with intense choreographies, beautiful costumes and some graphic violence.

The film also has a few minor flaws. It overstays its welcome with a length of two hours and forty-five minutes and takes too much time to unfold with dragging dialogues until the rewarding epic battle. The dance choreographies are a popular stylistic device in numerous Bollywood movies but they feel out of place in the serious context of this movie's plot. Finally, the movie has a heavily propagandistic undertone as the protagonist survives even though he has been stabbed multiple times and even manages to deliver an eloquent patriotic speech while dying on the battlefield. This final scene turns an otherwise realistic movie into an exaggerated work of fiction.

To conclude, Panipat is an interesting film for anyone interested in Indian culture and history. If you like detailed dramas and epic war movies, you will also appreciate this movie. The misplaced dance choreographies, plodding length and obvious patriotic elements might however not sit very well with audiences outside of India.

Fiction!!
yogeshatriek8 December 2019
Was forced to watch the movie by friends. Didn't had high hopes because of the cast. To my surprise is was worse than I thought. As a history geek, I was frustrated because of the irregularities in every 5mins. It's a history blunder, should be called fiction.

Panipat ... Decent one time watch ... A tad bit long !!! #sanjuzzreviews
sanjubhat8 December 2019
Watched Panipat yesterday despite reading the negative reviews of our so called "critics" & man was I glad that I didn't believe them in totality !!

The film is based on the 3rd Battle of Panipat which was fought between the Marathas lead by Sadshivrao Bhau Peshwa and Ahmed Shah Abdali's Afghans on 14th Jan 1761. Even though the Marathas were defeated by the marauding Afghans in the face off, this film is about glorifying the valor and bravery of the Marathas and their patriotic zeal and fervor.

Cast: Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon play Sadashivrao Bhau & Parvati ( Bhau's wife) respectively. Awesome performances by both; though I am not a great fan of Arjun Kapoor of late, he has given a restrained performance without any undue histrionics and over the top hamming.

Sanon is awesome with her role and her voiceover as the narrator of this great battle saga is also noteworthy. Looks very pretty too in traditional Maharashtrian attire.

Sanjay Dutt as Abdali does a decent job, looking like a fierce Afghan warrior in the true sense. Performance wise, he is ok, yet not something to go gaga about either.

Others like Mohnish Behl , Padmini Kolhapure , Nawab Shah etc do a decent job with their small roles.

Length of the film : A tad bit long at 2 hrs 51 mins , especially the first half which focuses on the build up to the war. The film however pics up pace in the second half and that's where the real action happens. Length of the film could have been cut down by at least 20 mins. Too detailed at times which slows down the narrative.

Direction ,Cinematography, VFX, Music etc:

Direction by Gowarikar is decent . He has done a lot of research for the film and it shows on screen. Costumes & jewellery are awesome. Sets give a larger than life feel, but do not capture every angle and detail, not bad though.

VFX is okay, though not in the same league as Bahubali

Music by Ajay Atul is a big letdown . No foot thumping songs like "Malhari" from Bajirao Mastani here. Sad.

My verdict: By no means is Panipat a bad film. Watch it as a standalone film without comparing it to Bajirao Mastani .A great one time watch. Don't go by what the critics say ( as I have said many times before ).

Watch it on the big screen with your family and celebrate the valor of the vanquished !!! 7/10 from me for this period drama .

A great film with great supporting cast
sahilsupekar19975 June 2020
This film is must watch. Although it is not a visual spectacle compared to sanjay leela bhansali films which have great set design and arts, it is a good film which tries to be accurate with history to some extent. It is a 3 hour long story of Battle of Panipat where Ahmad Shah Abdalli turned out to be victorious against the Marathas but received a massive blow such that he never ever invaded India again. The film showcases the bravery of Maratha Warriors as well as the problems they faced with courage.

I know the film is receiving hatred only because of Arjun Kapoor who plays the lead role of Sadashiv rao Bhau Peshwa.

All the comments and reviews in the section spread hatred and rating low only because of Arjun Kapoor. It should be noted that film is not only the work of lead cast but also the crew.

Went with low expectations, came out pleasantly surprised...
c_dohutia8 December 2019
Firstly, don't go to watch this movie if you are not a history buff. The acting can be looked aside if we look at the war games and battle formations. Most of the depictions were not true though but accurately showing the mounted camel canons made my day....So yes the film has flaws but it was a splendid effort nonetheless. Warning! First half an hour is a big drag.

Panipat.....I love movies based on history, however this movie push my patience to the limit.

I am sure Panipat was one of the greatest victories in the history of India but this movie does not bring the excitement that such a movie should.

Not sure what the director was thinking, the cast did not match the movie and on top of that they acted very badly, the only actor that I could tolerate was Sanjay Dutt (he plays the Afghan Warlord).

This a very long, badly acted movie, even the songs were below par. Only watch this movie if you are serious geek for history.

parth-553758 December 2019
According to me the first half of the movie is dragged a lot, only Sanjay Dutt scenes are good...they had a scope to cut it short but the second half keeps you engaged and is awesome..Sanjay Dutt has done an awesome job playing an afghan which i can say is better than Ranvir Singh(Although I he did the job pretty well too) Arjun Kapoor was Average dont judge his performance on the basis of trailer and comparing to Ranvir Singh in Bajirao Mastani.Overall a good movie.
