I don't even normally write movie reviews.

I don't know if it's the acting, the direction or the script (or all three), but this movie has some of the weakest, awkward and poorly timed dialogue I've ever seen. It's like the main character never rehearsed before making this. He just showed up and read his (poorly written) lines and they went with the first take. The soundtrack, cinematography and editing are great, but even they can't save this movie from feeling like the most boring, slow thriller I've seen in a long time. Also the scares and special effects are corny as hell.

adventurous, yet not quite

An admirable effort, to adapt a relatively obscure authors work, though the fact remains: its a short story, and at 80 minutes this movie plays like an exceedingly long twilight zone tale. the creepy and strange is diluted to kooky and weird, the wit is more kevin smith than lovecraft, and the ending is... boring. overall disappointing, pass unless you cant resist the premise

David Lynch it's not

I won't say it's a waste of your 90 minutes but don't expect Twin Peaks, X-files or Close Encounters. The story has tension and potential but it feels that they wrote out the 1 or 2 explanations that would have made the finale pay off. It sets an eerie mood and each character is weirder than the previous one but there's a plot hole you can't see but you know it's there. It's a fun little indie but don't expect to be satisfied by the ending.

Why?
kevinbarry-5315320 June 2020
Several questions enter my mind. One... Why did I waste my time watching this thing? Two... Why would somebody make a movie this bad? Three... Why couldn't anybody come up with a better ending? A good ending could potential he have wrapped up a lot of the very loose ends that are flopping around in this movie. From my point of you... Do you self a favor and just skip it.

Fails on SO Many Levels.

I don't write a lot of reviews, but feel I owe this one. I like small quirky movies. I don't need CGI/ effects. Just give me a decent story line and competent acting. This truly has neither. Nothing about this movie is remotely understandable, let alone making sense. Acting? is non existent. Directing? the same. Evidently this small town holds a big secret, but you'll never know what it is. I was suffering from a bout of insomnia, or I'd have turned it off in the first 10 minutes or so. This movie "tries" to be important, And fails. I looked in here hoping to find some meaning, or at least a clue about what's going on. No such luck. All I can think of is that it looks like a bunch of mediocre film students got together, and said "Hey! Let's make a movie!" "Great idea, but first let's do a few shots and smoke a LOT of weed!" "Cool! We'll go the old motel, and shoot. Then smoke some more weed! "Dude! I know where they keep the props for that haunted house they do every year!" "Oh man (taking another toke) I got a laser pointer we can play with too!" "DUDE! This is gonna be EPIC!"

A STRONG 1 AND A WEAK 2
markbohamed11 June 2020
I have NO IDEA where these high ratings come from, maybe from friends of the director. It was a movie that seemed 3 hours long and that's never a good thing if you are waiting for the ending. I would look to watch a different movie this was a science fiction at best and it was done very poorly!!

Painfully inept!
fdc22 January 2021
There's no science here to even approximate science fiction. Even the handling and use of land surveyor's tools (theodolite) is woefully ignorant; demonstrating that no attempt was even made to approach any sort of science or intellectual reality.

Don't waste your time... or eyesight.

Hey Dudes... Got Any Idea Where A Guy Could Score Some Funnel Cake???
wandernn1-81-68327423 June 2020
Not really sure what's going on, but there's some whacked out surveyor geek having a bad trip or delusions of some sort at the beginning.

I guess he finds out some hill that exists doesn't exist on a town map. Much weirdness ensues.

Some kind of alien influence I guess?? Turns local townies into dirt eating suicidal loons.

-1 Star for the really lame red light alien effects......

-1 Star for old man chased off by car headlights when he's about to smoke dude with a machete

OMG THE ENDING WAS HORRIBLY STUPID.

Like they just gave up on the movie at all lol

-1 Star for the Stupid Ending.....

Enjoyable small film
hopefortheheart6 January 2021
I caught this film by chance and really found myself enjoying it. I wasn't too sure what to expect at first but the dark comedy reminding me somewhat of some of the Cohen Bros. movies kept my attention and I also liked the horror elements to it.

The story was unique as well and I wasn't sure what to expect from the outset. Kept my attention throughout however and I would recommend the film to friends to at least give a chance.

If you have read anything by Fritz Lieber then you understand the strange.

Wild & Fun Romp
jackbrewerblog16 June 2020
I enjoyed this film very much. It's a wild and fun romp that should strike a chord with those who like some Body Snatchers with their Fargo. In the spirit of cult classics, don't take things too seriously and you should be able to appreciate a lot about this movie and have a good time in the process.

A Desert Phantasmagoria
misfitgirl27 June 2020
The Hill and the Hole is a bizarre and wondrous piece of cinematic confectionery. The first time I saw it, I was mystified and delighted. Every rewatch has made me like it even more. If you're familiar with the weird little Fritz Leiber story it's based on, you'll enjoy its extrapolation, and if you aren't, you'll want to go read it for yourself once you've watched Bill Darmon's film.

The film is packed with suspense, phantasmagorical moments, sharp and gorgeous cinematography, wry humor, and mystery. It will surprise you. Set alongside the arid beauty of the desert landscape, it really feels like the crew simultaneously captured this and created its own version of a unique place that just might exist. Although whether the Hill's existence is a good thing or a bad thing for humanity remains to be seen!
