Car Share Unscripted
Prismark108 May 2018
Many viewers were disappointed that the final episode of series 2 ended in a downbeat note and then Peter Kay said that there would be no more episodes.

Well Peter relented and this is a one off episode that is supposedly unscripted. I say supposedly because I do not thing for a moment that Peter Kay (John) and Sian Gibson (Kayleigh) drove around the Manchester area and made things up as they went along.

As they listen to the music of the 1980s and 1990s they talk about the show Friends. Just like John, I have probably seen half an episode of Friends and laughed when he said the only people who watch Friends don't have them!

They talk about having strokes, favourite meals and Kayleigh admits to never having watched a James Bond film. They guffaw at the supposedly true tale of Gordon who went on to become Jordan.

This time the episode ends with more tenderness which should satisfy the fans of the show until the very final episode is broadcast.

Enjoyed it but a question.

Why is the rear window dirty all the way through? You can see the wipers are used. All the other windows are clear though! No blemish!

Dirty rear window
imdbnotyou6 June 2020
A reviewer asks about the rear window being dirty throughout. This is down to a couple of things. The car is being towed on a low level transporter or behind another car. With 4 or 5 cameras at eye level, lights from cars behind would glare the lens and ruin each take and attention seekers who are following the hero car would also ruin takes. It could also be a way of enabling the actors to focus on the task in hand and not be distracted by traffic behind. It's about compromise between realism and reality when filming in real traffic but within the confines of the law and film insurance etc. Can you imagine the stick they would get if they were constantly spotte d by people acting up in the cars behind to get on camera.

A nice experiment, but...

It was a nice little experiment of Peter Kay's to have an episode of the show being unscripted, relying even more on the obvious and lovely chemistry between himself and Sian Gibson.

Unfortunately without the framework of a script, or a theme there are moments of this episode that aren't actually that funny. Yes, it's lovely to see the characters at all after the end to the second series felt like goodbye, but this won't go down as being one of my favourite episodes.
