Different but in a good way
mattyrogers-1802327 September 2018
1 episode in I am already concerned for the future of this show. Not because it's bad but because it's different and people don't do to well with different. That and Networks that have shows that are "different" don't know how to promote them. I'm especially concerned that it's on NBC since the shows title neither has Law & Order nor Chicago in front of it.

All the concern aside it's worth checking out. It doesn't fit the average procedural medical but at the same time keeps enough of the format that it could entertain the viewers who need it to say involved. The acting of the shows cast is impressive. 2 of the actors Ryan Eggold (Dirt, 90210 & The Blacklist) & Tyler Labine (Breaker High, Invasion & Reaper) I've seen in several different shows over the years and while I've always been pleased with their perfomances they've never impressed me more than they did on this show. I hope this show continues

Tears

I have this rule going on for myself. If an episode of a TV-Show manages to make me feel so much for the characters that I cry, it's a 10/10 for me. This episode did not make me cry, but it did make me tear up. And I figured that's worth a 9/10.

Other than that, this show has a lot of potential. There were quite a few OMG moments in this episode and overall I thought most of the characters have the potential to be interesting. The only criticism I have is that it felt a bit too much at one point. Suddenly, loads of big things were happening simultaneously and that did strike me as a bit unrealistic.

But besides that, I am definitely intrigued and will keep watching.

This just might be a good show.

This just might be a good show. I almost didn't give it a look because the promos made it seem too sappy and unrealistic (and it may yet be too idealistic, medically and administratively, to be sustainable) but it is majoring on relationships and interesting characters with depth. So, I'm giving the pilot an 8 (potentially great) out of 10. {Hospital Drama}

Maybe💜

I decided to watch the pilot with caution as these medical / hospital shows have all seemed like they were in a mold. Not this pilot! I only felt caution once while watching, and when the psychiatrists plan for Gema showed promise I decided that I'm almost hooked. I have the next two episodes on pvr and am going to watch them today!

Pilot

St Elsewhere was the best American hospital drama I have seen in recent decades. I was going to say years but I realised the last episode was broadcast over 30 years ago.

The first episode carries an element over from St Elsewhere. Both shows had a major character afflicted with cancer.

Dr Max Goodwin is the new medical director at New Amsterdam Hospital. He wants to shake things up and his first act is to fire all the cardiologists as they are all lazy. Goodwin wants to put patients first.

The rest of the episode is the staff with everyday medical issues. A patient from Liberia who may have Ebola to a teenager with a history of abuse with psychiatric issues. There is even moments of doctors personal lives.

This was a pretty competent and zippy opener. There is nothing new here that was not found in ER or Chicago Hope. Making your lead character superhuman and heroic looks like a misstep. Goodwin goes around asking staff how he can help but he has come to the hospital with no big vision of his own.

Rushed

I feel as though this show has potential. I have only just watched the pilot and it was good, but not great. I get that the pilot is meant to really grip you to continue watching, but I feel that in order to achieve that they rushed too much with too many aspects. Outside of the rushed feeling though, the content seems good, good soundtrack etc... an enjoyable episode.

Very crowded
Faristuta8 February 2023
This is a review of just the first episode, not necessarily the whole show. It's a very busy episode, crowded with so many heavy topics and stories that you don't have time to connect with any of the characters or make a judgement on the actions of Max or the other characters. He seems nice. He seems compassionate. But his character is very unrealistic even for a very active doctor.

Finally, as a doctor and as a fan of most medical shows, I sincerely hope that people don't believe most of the medical information in these series. The shows are interesting, funny, sometimes provocative but I've met a few patients who seem to think they're reflective of real-life medicine . Although some stories are relatable, they're anything but realistic. It's fiction.
