Stood up to its name

This pilot is great, felt genuinely like a follow up to the movie. Maybe some of the jokes felt forced sometimes, but it's still a comedy and not the cheap humor kind. The runtime also makes this a very watchable series, and if all the season remains like this, it will be a light and renewable series to watch.

The Darkness Returns...to Lighten our Spirits!

What a pleasant surprise this is!

Long wishing for some revival or sequel to the very funny What We Do In THe Shadows film, we get in in episodic form. Not only does this expand upon this specific premise of how vampires are realistically, but the show capitalized on the unique humor of Waititi and Clements. WIth characters that dress in that out of place ancient look ,and personas that seem like appropriate mishmashes of the vamps from the film, we have what seems like the exact same plot progression from the movie itself, but thats just the day in the life of most vampires with a Renfield like companion/familiar. This is opening up a new chapter in the vamp mythos, and with its quick wit, I gotta say I enjoyed the show so far.

It's obviously a fertile idea for a show. There are so many funny things you can do with the premise.

This first outing is a nice introduction to the main characters and setting - but it's a little light on the laughs. The high points are very high, but most of the episode isn't that humorous.

The highlights are Anything to do with the psychic vampire. Such a funny idea.

It's Modern Family with Vampires

The characters, one liners and situations are hilarious. They talk to the camera while explaining away reasons for whatever happened or is happening. Laszlo's disguise in one episode was a toothpick he kept in his mouth rendering him unrecognizable to everyone. I always get a few big laughs. Love this show.

A worthy companion to the film

What We Do in the Shadows is one of my favorite films ever, and my first introduction to Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. I watched the film when I was studying abroad in Wellington, NZ. I instantly fell in love with the endearing characters and mockumentary style, and I still revisit the movie every year during the Halloween season. When I heard there was going to be a show based off the film with a new cast of characters, I was worried that it wouldn't be able to live up to the success of its predecessor, nor would it be able to replicate the format effectively. I glad to report that I was proven wrong. This show is charming, hilarious, and a worthy companion to the film that shares its name.

Keeps up the standard of the film.

Faithful continuation of the film. Superb humour, brilliantly satirical. I already love the cast after just one episode, which says a lot considering how much I adore the movie. Good to see Taika Waititi directing. And yes, I've met a few energy vampires in my life.

Pilot

Warning: Spoilers
This is the closest thing we will get to the UK version of The Office these days and that is fine with me. Matt Berry returning to TV makes this even more worth checking out.

The jokes and premise get repetitive after awhile, but for any fans of comedy it is definitely worth watching.

Pilot

I thought the movie What We Do in the Shadows was an absurd comedy horror with the comedy being one note.

My thoughts on this pilot spin off were similar. Nador, Lazslo and Nadja are vampires in Staten Island and so far have failed to conquer America.

They live in a creepy old house decorated with crepe paper and looked after by Guillermo their slave who longs to be a vampire.

Their shortcomings are exposed when Baron Afanas visits from the old country.

The most true to life character is Colin Robinson, the energy vampire. The office bore who drains people of all energy.

sadly, not good

I had heard about this show, the reviews looked good, I really like some of the people involved - but it was terrible. There were a few good moments, but as a whole it fell flat. I didn't like or dislike any of the characters enough to care about them, and the jokes were awkward, but not in a funny way, more like secondhand embarrassment.

I apologize to people who like the show, I really wanted to, but I just couldn't. I hope that others see this review and at least go into it with a better idea of what they're getting - weird, but not quirky or particularly funny, and seriously slow, with a teeny hint of eww humor.
