Sita along with Janaki.
sudhakaranakhilan11 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Chola, the word has many synonyms like a shadow, water, etc but here Sanal Kumar Sasidharan collaborates these two word into a single title and produces Shadow of Water. Anyway, the title is symbolic in many aspects. It's about a woman, more about a teenage girl who always wears her school uniform when there was a shift to that casual dress. Then she redressed that uniform always shown her immaturity in some sort of the human walks. That's why she is unable to get a bus for return. She is silent in the way the two masculine characters put her in silence. One through sweet, polished words and the other is arrogant. But it seems she is more secure with the arrogant one. She feels sad and also she pours her tears only for the arrogant one. That's why she made her revenge towards the polished one when he kills the arrogant. So relate with the title the movie is about nature and nature directly depicts to women. That's why I felt something concerning Aravindhan's KanjanaSita along with this movie Chola. There Sita represents nature here Janaki (another name for Sita) represents nature. A brilliant coincidence.

An underwhelming mix of raw, haunting, eerie, and surreal! [+46%]
arungeorge1317 February 2020
What made me watch Chola was Sanal's terrific previous venture Ozhivudivasathe Kali (yet to see S Durga). Barring the solid performances of Joju George (as the molester) and Nimisha Sajayan (as the abused) and the stunning cinematography by Ajith Aacharya, I couldn't really take to Chola the same way I did with Ozhivudivasathe Kali. The transition from eerie drama to magical realism wasn't seamless and a random interjection of Stockholm Syndrome only made it worse. I like the way Sanal tackles the theme of oppression (this is the third in what one could call SOCU - Sanal's Oppression Cinematic Universe) but Chola takes things one step too far. This is one of the few films (in recent times) that makes effective use of its natural locales (Venu's Carbon is another). The ambiguity in (almost the entirety of) the second half and the climax left a bad taste in my mouth.

Reminds me of yesteryears' (70s) revenge/western thrillers and dark comedydisaster movie classics
toby_philips29 May 2021
With An Off-Day Game in my mind, I watched this flmovie and although the plot seems very familiar and Contempo, but as the movie rolls things get even darker and raw with a nightmarish climax layered in a wild rather barbarous manner. Joju effortlessly portrays a less spoken but dangerous barbarian, who heedlessly unmasks his predatory plunder and goes berserk at its pinnacle, Nimisha scores as the naive townee who then confronts her impending fate and turns absurdly preposterous due to the shock of what she went through and is deranged and helpless, Akhil is annoyingly original as a unsophasticated weirdo love interest skillfully behaves in each frame as it gains. The plot regardless a roadie, cans the high ranges of eastern kerala with the heavy set rains in each frame keeps the intensity of what is to come, each frames are commendable, especially the usage of source lights, 360 degree pan shots to elevate gravity of some pivot moments, ariel and long cut shots were placed at the right juncture. Laudable screenplay, cinematography, minimalist but elevating scores, spontaneous acting rather behavioral or unscripted acting, casting, setting, its rustic and raw treatment, altogether makes this unsung flick mollywood's disaster movie monument.

Bad message and brainless psychology
sunilpsagar11 May 2020
This movie got an interesting plot, starts of well.. it suffers from bad pacing, unjustified character decisions and poor psychology and encourage rape. Kerala social situation is nothing like in this movie. This is a disgrace to Kerala and Keralites.

WEIRD and BIZARRE
indianature18 April 2020
Zero rating.

I watched Chola expecting it to be a good movie given Joju George's brilliant Joseph. Nimisha Sajayan was very effective in Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum but most certainly not in Chola. What a terrible movie Chola turned out to be.

The opening scene of the boy waiting impatiently for his girlfriend held promise but was exceedingly slow as was the rest of the movie, lingering pointlessly on frame by frame by never ending frame. The plot went sluggishly from slow to weird and eventually bizarre.

If the girl and the boy went mad, then believe me we the viewers also will go mad just by watching this film.

This is one instance where I should have read (and trusted) the reviews first! Now Im wondering whether I should bother to watch Sashidharans S Durga at all.

NOT RECOMMENDED

The most senseless movie ever made!?
mohdsafwan-0527931 May 2020
Give me my time back. What on earth was that? The director thought he is doing something extraordinary but it was stupid and senseless to say the least! Idiotic film making.

Brilliant and artsy making, unconvincing as a whole
cinish8 February 2020
Sanal Kumar Sashidharan's penchant for uncinematic but breath taking and realistic shots of nature is one of the prime things that stood out for me in "Ozhivudivasathe Kali". Chola had more of that.

There are a few scenes that are just world class and timeless. The trailer bit. There is a scene that blends in a dramatic climax with raw nature. That scene can stand proud alongside Tarkovsky movie scenes. There is a scene where a very key incident is presented with camera movement and accompanying soundscape. That scene was brilliant too. These scenes are easily ten on ten scenes.

The movie maintains it's darkness. The movie is attempting to say something tall and radical. That in itself is so controversial that it can turn off a lot of viewers. However, even if you let the movie say what it wants to, the movie has not been able to say it convincingly.

Nimisha, Joju and Akhil Vishwanath have had their share of brilliant acting. However, there were portions that did not seem to gel as well. Nimisha's natural acting and voice modulations were impressive.

However, there were also technical imperfections. There was a scene with the camera following the actors in the jeep. The jeep stops and the camera just rushes into the jeep and turns around, making the camera very precarious. Pretty blatant an error.

Not an easy watch. Would recommend a watch to art movie lovers for some really brilliant pieces in the sonata even while the movie as a whole failed for me.

Disgusting
Bhomiq14 February 2020
It was a gross and vile movie that I want to punch myself for watching it. Of course, I left halfway and I will never see such a horrible movie ever again. It was so uncomfortable to stomach and the half we did watch, we were making fun of it. Like, what a dumb plot. And the characters were awful and unconvincing in every way. Not recommending it to anybody.

Darkest Malayalam movie
viveknair-816861 June 2021
I thought Aparan & Joji & some more as well, are the darkest movies I have ever seen in Malayalam movie industry till date.

I was just blown off after seeing this movie.

Just 3 main characters, hats off to the director.

It depicts how human behaviour evolves/succumbs/adapts according to the situation.

The 2nd half was inhuman!!!!

I don't have the courage to watch it again.

Excellent screenplay.

One-Line Review: Chola / Ambient Crime Drama / 6 Stars
nairtejas17 April 2020
It is rather difficult to comprehend what Chola (Shadow of Water) tries to convey but on continued assessment to me it felt like a display of the brutally animalitic and exploitative nature of man, told through an eerie setting that is the hallmark of Sanal Sasidharan and ended with a startling climax. TN.

Good cast trapped in a disgusting plot
pramodkiranrb6 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In a rather predictive plot the cast portray their unconvincing characters, Joju George as the boss and molester, Akhil as a stupid next door kid with blind faith in his boss and Nimisha Sajayan in a school uniform. After the slow paced tiring two odd hours half filled with visuals of the forest, fog, wind, water & two tilapias and the remaining with spine chilling helplessness and fear in the eyes of an adolescent accompanied by violations that deserves to be termed gross, was left wondering why I didnt leave early like the others.

Eerie Drama
shyammukundan8 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
" Chola" Malayalam movie.

Sanal Kumar Sasidharan with another intense, eerie drama.

The truant school girl out for a day's trip to the city, with her lover boy... plans work out well, except the boy's boss ( Aashan) is driving them from the hill station to the city, who has his own villainous plans. The lover birds had a jolly good time, till the things take a murkier turn. They were forced to stay in a shady lodge for the night, where she gets physically invaded by the Aashan, the boy is helpless and the girl is a hapless victim of circumstances.

Her immature behaviour is taken advantage of, to be, physically abused again. Boy's male hormones erupt as a revenge, to culminate the movie for the climax.

Joju George as the Aashan and Nimisha Sajayan as the school girl has presented their characters with high intensities. The background music is terrific to keep the eerie mood of this presentation. The camera work blots up the beauty of the landscapes and brought the emotional canvas of the story, alive.

8 on 10 for eerie drama, very Serious Watch.

Screenplay is slow, at places, still the mood is not lost.

Unlike Sanal's previous movie, this is has no much social obligations.

You a Serious movie buff ? ..... ... Must Watch.

ambiguity and beauty
Milind0417 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It starts as a thriller and towards the end becomes so subvert and contextual in its approach that you might gonna bite the dust if you looking for defined answers and regular cinema hooks but if you patient and not looking for your usual thrill it offers so much more than a regular thriller. Pitch perfect casting the atmosphere sucks you in as if you travelling together and there is a mystical quality to it with its teeth deeply sunk into reality. MASterful work not for everyone.

Chola - Worried
sangamithra-2131222 May 2020
Chola, was actually recommended to be watched. Thus I happened to watch. I was not able to accept the plot. Made me feel horrible and why people are still having dumb plots in movies when a movie can be wisely handled. Movie lovers, art movie lovers who ever it can be it should make us feel either sad or happy. This movie gave me nightmares why girls are the victim for abuse and why do they still keep on taking such movies. This movie was only good with the Cinematography.

I will not recommend this movie

Only a psycho can take a movie like this. This director must be banned from making movies. Movies are meant for entertainment not for making people depressed.

An eerie depiction that hits you hard
codenamebigb18 September 2021
An eerie depiction of the story of an innocent girl who sets about to enjoy the day with her boyfriend. Though predictable, it strikes hard on you. Cinematography and music are the key elements that glues your mind on the movie. They add greatly to the rawness. Not a movie for everyone. Strong theme.

Disappointed
opotraining15 December 2020
The film stars good but becomes bore later. The film moves at very slow pace with still camera videos for long duration. The story is also didn't make sense after second half. The thrill is lost in second half. Janaki was just crying always except the beach scene. The ending was wierd. The director couldn't tell why the girl who initially tried to run away from Jojo and was later following Jojo. When he touches her she starts crying. When her boyfriend tried to help, she pushes him and goes with jojo. Janaki had same emotions throughout the scene.

Excellent performance all around
pradeep-183856 February 2020
Firs of all the cast Joju George , Nimisha Sajayan & the new guy were brilliant...the photography and sound top notch ...and the mild and beautiful baground score....apt. ..the movie though slow moving keeps you hooked. ..the ending will be a matter deeply discussed as it does not take the conventional route....you may love or hate the movie ...but for me it was well made and different with an excellent cast.

Tragic journey of two fiancés
olon-5570215 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
From a mountain village surrounded by greenery and shrouded in fog (we are in Kerala, India) emerge two men and a van: they are waiting for a young and fearful girl whom the young man, her fiancé, has invited for a trip to the distant city. Here, shops, department stores and the beach are the two young people's experience of joy and serenity. But it soon gets dark and it is too late to return to the village. The third man, the owner of the van, called the Chief, is a rough, big bearded man. He takes them to a squalid and filthy motel on the outskirts of town, sends the boy to look for food and rapes the girl. Early in the morning they leave for the village. And amidst the mountains, woods and raging torrents, a finale of barbaric and crude violence unfolds. The whole story is framed by a fairy tale narrated with a voice-over, in which a virgin desired by a prince asks the Earth: but whose am I? The condition of women in some countries is still very backward. This is the denunciation of the film, which unfolds in a lyrical-intimist first part and in a second part of epic violence, where the three characters in the story are surrounded by a violent and hostile Nature (fog, rain, a rushing waterfall). Despite a few too many slow moments, the film is well narrated, powerful and not easily forgotten.

Surreal depiction of human relationships !!
madhukar3030 October 2020
"Chola" is made for parallel cinema audiences and film festivals around the world. I am pretty sure the mainstream audience would not like the movie one bit. One has to understand the fact that Chola is a different movie made for different set of audiences, that is why the rating here is so poor. The ratings here, definitely doesn't paint the picture of this fantastic movie.

Chola is a road movie that combines a host of genres like Drama, suspense, physiological triller and horror to present a very mature storyline. The film contains some top class elements in cinematography and sound design, and is best when viewed in the biggest screen possible. Screenplay is absolutely realistic with the depiction of even the smallest of details. Editing, production design, costumes and make up ably support the movie.

The three actors have done a wonderful job with Nimisha stealing the show yet again with a stellar performance. The entire film hinges on her expressions of a growing fear, breaking free, sensing her doom and then expressing her insanity or having a bout of Stockholm syndrome. However, though she turns into a victim of circumstance, she continues to show her resistance, in vain. Nimisha infuses a certain power that makes her character of a schoolgirl indomitable despite what she has gone through. Direction is at its best throughout the movie and kept delivering punch after punch.

Overall, An absolutely Disturbing film with strong message on the power politics of patriarchy. Director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan's film puts out the bizarrely dark aspects of the reality that we usually choose to ignore. The movie will make you thoroughly uncomfortable. Chola is an very important film in my cinematic journey on many fronts.

Khan Review
zkzuber29 September 2022
Any one appreciating this movie surely needs medical help like the producer, director, writer. What a total waste of time and energy. I not being from south do watch South movies with subtitles but this was a torture. The first half was promising but completely wasted the second half, agree the location was good but their was ni need for the director to go slow in each and every scenes making it horribly slow and boring. The girl in the entire movie was hauling in the name of acting. What was this movie all about by making such movies which no one understand makes the director feel he is making award winning film infact he should get one for the worst movie. Since I don't know much about South film makers, but the South viewers should boycott such directors.
